I wondered too, so I did this.

Wikipedia's summary:

Twitch Plays Pokemon is a "social experiment" and channel on the video streaming website Twitch, consisting of a crowdsourced attempt to play Game Freak's and Nintendo's 1996 role-playing video game Pokémon Red, by parsing commands sent by users through the channel's chat room.

So essentially it sounds like the chat box for the livestream IS the controller for the game being streamed.

I knew all of that.
I just don't get everything else.

Why is the Helix Fossil important?
What is Democracy vs Anarchy in the context of the game?
Who is Jesus Bird, Abby, and Jay Leno?
Why does everyone hate Flareon?
Why is everyone spreading this crap around when no one gets the inside jokes?!?
AND HOW IS THERE AN ENTIRE MYTHOS FOR SOMETHING THAT'S ONLY BEEN AROUND A WEEK?!?

One word...

Internet.

I don't know why you're making a big deal out of this, because the only way to understand it is to have been a part of it to begin with.

Also all on Wikipedia.

The Helix Fossil is a joke, because in the early days the game would often accidentally go in the bag and select the Helix Fossil, often enough that it is affectionatley referred to as a deity.

Anarchy was the original version of the chatroom controller, where everyone's commands were input into the game. Democracy mode is where players vote on what actions to make. The mode can be switched by a supermajority vote.

Jesus Bird is the players' Pidgeot, who is exceptionally good in battles. Abby and Jayleno were the nicknames given to 2 pokemon who were released, whose names were something along the lines of ABBBBBB and JLVHUIPHIO respectively.

The Flareon thing isnt mentioned in Wikipedia, but feel free to browse the reddit subforum for that.

It has apparently been around for 2-3 weeks to a month, but only recently became viral.

I literally have never looked this up before now and I answered all but 1 of your questions.

1. Because everyone us TPP to consult it

2. Democracy is for the game's completion

3. Jesus Bird: Pidgeot, Abby was Charmeleon (who got released), and Jay Leno was a Rattata (who was also released), and was better than the DigRat

4. Apparently it was the false prophet

5. Because why not? It's gotten so popular that even media outlets have covered it (like CNN, BBC news, etc)

6. I dunno about that one.

EDIT: This is pretty much a +1 post cuz ninjas

I don't want to browse subforums that don't actually tell me anything.
I want true information.

OK, well after about 5 more minutes of digging, I found the flareon bit. It is almost as good as Pidgeot (Bird Jesus) but not quite as good because nothing can be as good as bird jesus.

People have adopted silly little religious sects to have more fun, with people worshiping the Helix Fossil and Bird Jesus for anarchy, how the game was initially intended for play, and those wanting democracy so as to complete the game worshiping the unchosen Dome Fossil and Flareon.

Anything else you are too lazy to find on your own?

Cause I also have no clue. I'm just annoyed that you care so much.

What? Me wanting to figure something out annoys you? Why is that?

I dunno if you've scrolled up recently, but you should.

Flareon is the False Prophet.
OK...what does that mean?

BUT WHY HAVE THEY DONE ALL OF THIS?!?

BUT WHY HAVE THEY DONE ALL OF THIS?!?

Because it is enjoyable, and makes the improbability of their eventual completion of the game more light-hearted.

Though more than likely they enjoy the chaos of screwing with the so-called "social experiment" by making people believe they have formed 2 conflicting religions from a livestream of an old video game.

This "something" that you much too vaguely refer to is a series of memes that started in the eyes of dozens of thousands of people at once.

The reason why I'm annoyed is just the fact that of all things, you're stressing yourself over a full explanation of this, and even after getting one, you STILL don't get it. How far are you willing to go to know all this? More importantly, how will this knowledge benefit you in any way?

BUT WHY HAVE THEY DONE ALL OF THIS?!?

Stop beating a dead horse by asking "why" a meme has become a thing.

I just don't get why everyone's posting about this stuff.
What's the point of spreading about this meme if it's such an inside joke that requires explanation?

because thousands of people get the joke

Just because you're not having fun, doesn't mean everyone else isn't. Stop being such a downer and let us have our fun, for bird jesus' sake.

But that's the thing.
I want to be a part of that group.

Then wouldn't it be a good idea be not to irritate people in it by making it seem as if you're questioning why we're having fun? This stuff can easily be found out in like 5 seconds by just googling it and watching the stream..

If you see a lot of people on the streets eating ice cream, do you ask why?

The answer is simple: Because people like eating ice cream. But that's irl. This is the internet, and spreading a meme around is pretty much the same as eating ice cream; people enjoy doing it. Why? Hell if I know, I like eating ice cream AND sharing stuff on the internet, so the real question is: Why not?
