Favorite 80's Movies

Thar

Recommended Posts

I never got to experience the 80's, but there are definitely some movies made during that decade that stuck out to me. Discuss movies that were made between 1980 and 1990 (or that just felt like an 80's movie) that stuck out to you.

The Breakfast Club - For all I knew, this was just an all-around good movie that I never heard ANYTHING bad about. In fact, when I told some people that I've never seen it before, they thought I was crazy. Though, it made sense that I didn't, considering it wasn't child appropriate for me to be allowed to watch at the time. Nonetheless, I had the opportunity to watch it on Netflix, and they weren't lying; it was an amazing movie. The characters, the script... everything, and the fact that it all took place in one setting made it all the more impressive (not to mention, Jedd Nelson was f*cking sexy back in the day... and still is.)

Terminator 2: Judgement Day - I know this wasn't made in the 80's, but it came out before I was born, plus it feels like an 80's movie, so it's close enough. I've seen the original Terminator, and I've seen bits and pieces of its sequel, but after seeing the second movie entirely and putting them side-by-side, the sequel was MILES better to me. This was Schwarzenegger in his prime, and this movie was probably his best in my opinion. Every scene in this movie made me feel like a real man, and there are few scenes in action movies where the main character can pull off reloading a shotgun by spinning it 360 degrees around his wrist while gunning it on a Harley. However, while good ol' Arnold was a hoot to watch, this movie wouldn't be complete without Robert Patrick playing the villain. This movie was just all-around epic and makes me reconsider my last list of favorite movies.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off - This movie was also on Netflix, but I first saw this movie on a bus-ride to Disney World for a marching band tour, and thing about my bus (there were 2 Coach buses) is that it was always the one with good taste in movies. I've never even heard the movie even get mentioned by anyone before then, so I was in for a treat that did not disappoint. This was about as favored of a movie as the Breakfast Club by most people I knew, and I was inclined to agree with them all the same. It was the perfect combination of witty, comedic, tense, and feel-good, which all add up to another one of my favorites that I never got to see as a kid.

Blade Runner: A visually stunning cyberpunk masterpiece.

Commando: Schwarzenegger at his finest.

The Delta Force: Chuck Norris vs. Lebanese terrorists to 80's music. Nuff said.

Invasion USA: Soviet pricks attack America. Chuck Norris fights back.

Rambo 1-3: The trinity of Stallone machismo. I still have to watch 4. Which reminds me. I have to hunt down a copy of Cobra...

Bloodsport: What Street Fighter II should've been. Also, Van Damme displays his amazing physical feats.

The Running Man: Schwarzenegger on a violent game show, fighting jagoffs with names like Sub-Zero. Need I say more?

Batman: Visually gorgeous, dark and whimsical. I still have a mini Batmobile toy on my shelf.

Die Hard: With a suave villain and Carl Winslow as a supporting character, this is argubly one of the funniest action movies ever made.

The 80's had so much machismo.

But then, there's the 90's...

Batman Returns: My favorite live-action Batman movie.

Demolition Man: Recently saw this. A Stallone masterpiece where he fights an evil Wesley Snipes in a pussified future. The dialogue is hilarious, Stallone is really colorful, and the first 10 minutes are friggin' awesome!

Out For Justice: Steven Segal is out for revenge. The fight scenes are really good.

True Lies: Arnold vs. terrorists. Also, the video game tie-in was excellent.

Batman Forever: It wasn't THAT bad. Just a wildly different direction...though Two-Face sucked, made dumber because Harvey was introduced in '89 as a black guy, and now a white guy is playing him.

Doesn't get much better than those three, honestly (especially T2 and the breakfast club, which are both in my list of my top 10 favorite movies). But if i may inject some animation into the mix...

The original transformers movie: you know, the one where optimus prime died and it actually meant something. Its really, really good as far as kids movies go, (although it kills a good portion of the G1 tv show's cast rather unceremoniously) and the celebrity, voice cast (freaking leonard nimoy and orson welles are the main villains) really add to to whole thing. Oh yeah, and megatron kills starscream finally. Thats always good.

Grave of the fireflies: honestly one of my favorite studio ghibli movies (not as good as nausica or mononoke though). Its depressing sure (the main character starves to death, and no this isnt a spoiler, its told to us at the beginning) but its such a strong film and really showcases just how beautiful and powerful a medium like animation can be at times.

Mobile Suit gundam: char's counterattack: MSGCC was supposed to be the end of the gundam franchise, a grand finale and a sendoff to the universal century as a whole. Now, sunrise making heaps of money ensured that this didn't happen, but the movie is still gorgeous and action packed. Not only are the mecha gloriously animated on a movie's high budget, but the well choreographed action scenes combined with an epic musical score (screw soldiers of sorrow. Beyond the time is my jam), makes for a much more epic experiance. In my humble opinion, i wouldnt have minded if this was the finale to the saga of gundam. Yoshiuki Tomino's writing is still bad though....

  • 1 month later...

The 80s and 90s were great in terms of what to watch. Even stuff that's regarded as "it wasn't that good now that I look at it again.... in fact X was a horrible idea" was enjoyable. There's nothing I'm willing to wake-up in the mornings for anymore unless it's nostalgia shows from back then being aired at unholy hours of the morning.

Anyways, I thought this image fits here:

From the image, my personal favorite has to be Back to the Future. Simply an amazing trilogy.

I never got to watch Robocop and am hesitant about watching the remake if that's the case. Same for Indiana Jones (I do feel I missed out on a lot with just those 2)

Ghost Busters = Heck yeah!

DAT Mr Miyagi from Karate Kid, E.T.  and the Gremlins as well.
