I was watching the latest episode of YGOTAS (on TFS's site) and funnily enough it touched on explaining card effects (like Negate Attack)

 

Regarding the Barrett thing, I didn't notice that neither and I watched the episode twice GDI, if anything it could be an animation error, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Yes and no.

 

If they didn't explain the card effects, it is ridiculously easy to have no clue what the hell just happened, or is about to happen. And that's from the perspective of the audience, to say nothing of how difficult this would be as someone actively participating in the Duel, especially if you legitimately have no idea what a card does.

 

 

 

No, no, no. I mean that they literally just read the card text instead of simplifying it.

 

A character will talk in some way that we can grasp what kind of person they are, and then they read proceed card effects like a complete robot.

 

If a character plays Ultimate Offering, do we really need to hear "I activate Ultimate Offering! When this card is activated, I can pay 500 Life Points to Normal Summon an additional monster from my hand!"? Why can't they say "I activate Ultimate Offering! It lets me pay 500 Life Points to summon another monster!"?

 

I remember watching Zexal where Shark explains some spell effect as "By discarding 1 Fish-Type Monster Card from my hand to the card Graveyard, I can Special Summon 2 Level 3 or below Water Attribute, Fish-Type Monsters from my Main Deck!" And, it sounded like the VA was actually reading the card.

 

Simplified: "I discard a Fish in order to summon 2 Level 3 Fish monsters from my deck!"

 

It's like the action stops for 5 seconds to read stuff, and it gets more grating when more card effects that trigger off of it need to be explained in roughly the same amount of detail.

[spoiler=Extremely stupid but short ramble about Yuya's father]So like this is something that's been kind of dropped or just forgotten about but we still know basically nothing about him, and all these Yus from different dimensions with identical faces and physiques, I'd have to personally imagine that he's fathered them all. Clearly the fact that there's been basically no meaningful mention of him since rather early episodes means he's either totally irrelevant or an absolutely massive twist at some point, the latter feels more likely.

 

I don't fully read through this thread and don't look at Arc V shite in other places so this may all be the most common idea around and I just don't know, but I think he's likely to be working with either Academia or Xyz. Because he appeared not to be a cunt I'd lean towards Xyz but then egh. It'd feel a bit less significant if he was on the same side as Yuya. Kind of feel like he's going to turn out to be some high ranking Academia officer and has been all along. Like the reason he left so suddenly was they emergency teleported him back and he had no choice in it.

 

I mean fuck, maybe he had done a Sora and ceded from them, wanted to just stay with Yuya and Yoko but they found him and brought him back and he's been imprisoned there. That's another possible thing. This is baseless speculation flowing from nothing at all, but the fact that the character who Yuya is modelling himself off of has made no appearance 93 episodes in leads me to wonder. I imagine I'm after missing or forgetting some stuff that is actually known about him, and in this post I've not even settled on a theory myself, but egh. With no subs and not being arsed with the raw it came to mind and it's a thing that, as mentioned initially, hasn't really been talked about here recently (because it's irrelevant, I admit to myself).

Looking back on the Yugioh franchise regarding parents:

• Yugi's father is somewhere traveling and never shown on-screen.
• Jaden's wasn't mentioned.
• Yusei's appeared a few times in the series (albeit as a ghost) for spiritual support for him.
• Yuma's actually came around in the end, but otherwise was traveling in the Astral World.

 

Considering that we know nothing about Yusho outside from flashbacks, anything is possible regarding why the hell he wasn't here at the start of the series.

During the previous episode, all of the Yu's said that they were one, so probably.

 

To be fair, I haven't given it much thought since I'm more interested in Yuri and what sort of Deck he plays [i know it's Plant based, but what do they do?] and yeah, he's only mentioned when Yuya has to think about his dueling, but eventually we'll find out why he isn't here. If anything, I suppose we'll find out the answer sometime in the next arc (after Yuya has his match against Jack). That, and probably what Sky Magician does.

Bear in mind that the fansub's translation won't necessarily catch the speech patterns found in the original Japanese text, whether due to language barriers or simply inability from the translator's part to notice and/or convey them. Also, in the spirit of fair play mentioned by Evilfusion earlier ago, they have to explain in detail how the card works, since, otherwise, that can hinder the opponent's plays, like at the example you listed above: if the player didn't know Ultimate Offering's effect, and wasn't informed that its effect generates extra Normal Summons, they could refrain from activating a Trap Hole set on their S/T Zone, which would prevent the summoned monster from winning the duel. You can never play the game assuming everyone knows how every single card works, specially if your opponent, for some reason, can't read yours. Also, it works in benefit of the younger viewers who're still learning to play the game.

That really doesn't matter considering this is an anime, and smoother dialogue should be a much higher priority than minor realism. Besides, if an anime character wanted to Trap Hole Ultimate Offering's summon, they would do so, even if the opponent never told them what kind of summon it is. And a headcanon of mines' always been that duelists actually memorize commonly used cards, it being one of the things (along with luck and a connection to your cards' spirits) that determines a duelist's skill in-universe.

Granted, there are sometimes storyline reasons for explaining the full effects of a card. For example, Sergey explaining that Earthbound Prison would halve the LP of whoever destroyed it. Withholding that information would be a major tactical advantage, and many characters do withhold information that way ('now that you've attacked my zero atk monster, I activate its effect!'), but forcing Yuya to make his decision with that information in play offers more suspense and character development.

Sometimes, though, it's unnecessary, sounds stupid, and detracts from immersion. I doubt the Japanese can sound much better.

I remember in 5Ds dubs that there was a narrator who explained the card effects, so the characters wouldn't waste dialogue on explaining what the hell certain cards do. However, as I stopped watching dubbed Yugioh in the middle of said arc, I don't know if ZEXAL dubs had that kind of thing or ARC-V dubs have something of the sort.

Well this is the second week in a row that the subs have come this late. I know some people (last week) said that perhaps there were issues with uploading n' junk, but we don't know what's happening on the subber's end, so we can only assume

 

 

 

Someone I know said supposedly the show isn't having the best ratings right now, for some reason. Maybe that is it?
