[spoiler=Episode thoughts]

This was a pretty solid episode in general. No one pulled too many stupid plays, and Crow's strategies here were totally legitimately strong. Raikiri is a really strong card, and the various ways he can bring it out make it a constant threat, including the Phantom Synchro play, which is essentially a Synchro Summon that brings out a Synchro in the Graveyard, rather than the Extra.

At first I was a little skeptical about Shun's behavior in this episode, but reading the script, it makes perfect sense. According to Dennis, Shun was at a pro Duelist school, so he probably did have a bit of a fanbase.

And he probably realized that he was starting to lose himself in the war effort against Academia. He had allowed rage to become his fuel, whereas Yuto never forgot the original purpose - to restore happiness and peace to their world.

And the whole Duel from when Shun saved the kid to the end was just epic and wonderful. As expected, it was his turn to lose, but he lost gracefully, pretty much befriended Crow, and will probably gain the significant change in viewpoint that is needed. Plus he seems to be aware that the underground is just a setback that can be overcome by strength and determination.

All in all, very pleased with this Duel.

[spoiler=Episode]

I liked this episode. I liked it quite a bit.

Shun saving Tanner was utterly ridiculous. And completely awesome.

Great to see Crow use Bora, that make me happy.

This is the first duel where we've seen every iteration of Rise Falcon and it's Rank-Ups, though it occurs to me: If Shun had used Satellite Cannon's attack decrease effect on Raikiri before he ranked up to Ultimate, wouldn't he have won?

BROFIST OF FRIENDSHIP

Great to finally get some character development on Shun.

So yeah, if anyone has an answer regarding that fourth point of mine, that'd be swell, cause otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Aaaaaaaaah, I forgot it still had Sky Excalibur on it. Thanks a bunch, that clears things up nicely.

Also, another point about Satellite Cannon Falcon, I'm a little sad Melissa didn't get a little worried when that came out, given what happened last time it was around.

[spoiler=Thoughts on 82 Subbed]

- At least seeing the kids and saving Tanner helped Shun remember what he was fighting for; to protect the children of his homeland, and considering the size of their enemies, both of them are quite alike, and ofc Crow considers Shun an ally following the conclusion of the duel, with Shun vowing to climb back up to defeat his enemies.

- Meanwhile, JMR reminds Yuya that the Exec Council isn't taking action and the reason he took aggressive measures with all the Security was because there wasn't any time to waste given that the Academia are already making their move following Dennis' return to the Academia and The Professor dispatching Barret and the OF alongside Yuri. He also claimed he would take custody of Yuzu and Serena saying that the Academia wouldn't do a thing, ofc we all know that is a load of bollocks.

[spoiler=82]*claps*

Shun, you did marvelously. You grew more in this episode than in the other 81 episodes of the series. I'm sad it took you this long, but if you keep on this road, you can come out on top by the end.

Crow did well, too.

I went into 81 expecting to deal with Bullshit from two of the least likable cast members, and I was instead met with a good deal of growth for both sides, with their characters being refined, and a really enjoyable duel. And Crow's ace recycling/moving gimmick was just fun to watch.

One of the best 2-parters in the series.

[spoiler=One question]

Given you can command monsters in a duel, why didn't Crow EVER think to order Raikiri to save Tanner? I mean, was he just so shocked that Tanner was on his monster that common sense just didn't apply to him or something?

yeah its weird, seeing that shun can just ride revolution falcon abandoning his bike, its not like the monster are programmed to follow the duel disk, he can just make raikiri to stop and put down tanner to ground safely, instead he's planning to bring the tanner to the previous bridge...which is obviously more dangerous since tanner could fall when they're ascending

You're overlooking something very important in regards to Crow not thinking of commanding his monster in that way.

Action Duels is a Standard concept. It's a form of Dueling that utilizes the advanced Solid Vision SPECIFICALLY so that Duelists and monsters can interact. Although the Synchro Dimension has Solid Vision due to JMR, it seems that Security was specifically given the Solid Vision technology to assist in captures and to later benefit JMR's ambitions. It's unclear whether everyone in Synchro has this form of Solid Vision.

However, the Synchro Dimension doesn't do Action Duels where it's common to interact with your monsters for creative purposes. In fact, Standard didn't even think of using the technology like this until Yuya's father developed the entertainment style revolving around it. Until then, using the mass of Solid Vision like this was considered unorthodox and unnecessarily flashy.

The Synchro Dimension specializes in Riding Duels, where the real excitement is the speed the Duelists are going at, combined with the intensity of the Duel. Based on the fact that the stadium got damaged so badly by Shun vs Dennis (especially by Chaos Giant), it's possible that Reo Akaba further upgraded the technology when he took over Academia, to make it more powerful and destructive to be used in damaging real structures, for the war effort. It's been suggested before that the Xyz Resistance stole or adapted Academia technology for their resistance efforts, including the cardifying technology, and as such probably got the stronger Solid Vision by one means or another. This is why Yuto and Shun were noted as producing holograms with mass even outside Action Fields in Standard. The stadium destruction was caused by an Academia agent and an Xyz Resistance member, both of their monsters doing incredible damage to real structures, something that was viewed as incredibly shocking to the Synchro Dimension residents, which is why I think Academia/etc have a STRONGER version of Solid Vision.

With this theory in mind, Crow probably ISN'T familiar in the slightest with employing Solid Vision in this context. He probably is aware the monsters have physical mass, as it's the appeal of Solid Vision, but not with instructing your monsters to follow your non-Duel-action related whims. Not to mention, at the speed you're driving at, you probably wouldn't even THINK of doing anything like jumping off your D-Wheel onto your also-moving monster. And since you can't really stop moving with the autopilot, Crow was more concerned with where he can deposit Tanner even if he could keep the kid from flying off.

But Shun, who was involved in a war effort that employed the stronger Solid Vision as a weapon, and spent time in Action Duels in Standard, is probably not nearly as likely to lose his head under the pressure of "Ohmygod, kid in danger, oh sheet", and also is perfectly capable and willing to leap onto his monster for that purpose.

[spoiler=82 once more]

I'm pretty sure you might have noticed, and probably someone might have asked this earlier, but it's still legit - Why did not Shun just TALK to Crow?

He could have told him there's a child hanging from his Raikiri or not? The plan "B" ("A" was cancelling the duel) seems lot more reckless and child-threatening. We saw him catching up to Crow in a close proximity and then ordering Revolution Falcon to destroy the monster, maybe aiming to grab Tanner when the solid vision was destroyed, supposedly?! But oh well, attacking its back to destroy it is as safe as it gets.

Like that is easy to manage, we did it in "saving a child, desperately clinging to a hologram during a Riding duel" class.

Rant over.

If anything, i fail to acknowledge that monster as his "Ultimate" RR, it did look godly, but was totally anti-climatic and did not have the same impact as Sattelite Cannon Falcon. Well, with Double Des Force being a card and Blaze Falcon usable, i can see why they'd want a Rank10 monster, but now was a bad timing to introduce it. cause people will now associate it with losing, so much for being called ultimate....

On Shun's nakama-lessness - after the Dennis fiasco i can see why he puts so little effort in liking or respecting the Lancers. C'mon Reiji, you tensai-mastermind do zero background checks on anyone and couldn't have secured your associates' decks to make sure you have no spies (something that has been done before, 5Ds knew each other's cards, true team building).

I thought Yuzu would get to understand Shun more (provided she has the children's earlier insight on how he's intimidating and sore) or defend him against the kid's accusations OR at least validate his change in attitude, but all she did was call his name occasionaly. Seriously, is that what people do? Couldn't she get 1 short line/thought to convey her understanding...

She gets an episode nevertheless, for the sake of Sora and Tsukikage's character development.

Script for Scale 4 is here!!!

(Thank DMC3444 for the script!)

[spoiler=Scale 4]

Yuzu: This is the Phantom’s hideout?

Yuya: I’m a wanted person, so I’ve gotta stay hidden somehow.
And now my secret hideout is discovered…

Yuzu: Hey! You want to work as an instructor for my school?
I’ll pay you 500 yen per hour!

Yuya: That’s cheap!

Yuya: Sorry, but I don’t have time for that.
I have some business that must be taken care of, no matter what.

Yuzu: Some business that must be taken care of?

(Yuya begins to type at a computer)

Yuzu: Is this “business” of yours connected to the hacking of Leo Corporation?

Yuya: I’m using Leo Corporation’s Solid Vision to search for a certain card…Genesis Omega Dragon. (Real subtle with the religious reference there, Yoshida-sensei cm.gif)

Yuya: A card that will decide the future of this world…

Yuzu: Genesis Omega…

Yuzu: Is that one of those rare and precious cards!?

Yuya: I’d rather you didn’t know about it…

Yuzu: But you just need to find that card, right?
In that case, I’ll have you become an instructor at my school!

Yuya: I can’t say I agree to that.

Yuzu: But! I have the contract!

Yuzu: Tada! This is a magic trick of mine!

Yuya: That’s…the thing you asked me to sign!

Yuzu: This means that you have a contract with my school now!

Yuya: Ahhh…Why did I fall for such a hackneyed trick…

Yuzu: Until you find that card, I’ll be your manager, at a rate of 1000 yen per hour!

Yuya: 1000 yen!? There’s no way I can pay you!

Yuya: But I’m cool with it if it’s the other way around.
If you can pay me 1000 yen per hour, I’ll let you be my manager.

Yuzu: Why am I paying you!?

Yuya: You don’t have to do this.
I don’t need a manager.

Yuzu: (Internally grunts)

Yuzu: 100 yen per day! But I’ll definitely pay you!

Yuya: What a cheapskate!

Yuzu: Now that I’ve become your manager, you’d better find your card quickly!

Yuto: Are those two going to be all right?

(Cuts to Leo Corporation)

SAWATARI-SAN: I’m sorry about this.
I was just one step away from catching him.

Sora: Don’t you mean ten steps away?
You didn’t even win the Duel, to begin with.

SAWATARI-SAN: What!?

Reiji: Save your excuses for later.
From this point on, I’ll begin the analysis of Pendulum Summoning.

Sora: Whoa…
He’s not holding back…

SAWATARI-SAN: Damn it!

Sora: Where are you going?

SAWATARI-SAN: The training room! If I was able to jump to that last Action Card, I would have won!

Sora: I don’t think that was the only reason you lost…

Sora: Still…I can’t stop thinking about this.

Kurosaki: About what?

Sora: This Sakaki Yuya person.
One month ago, we were assembled here, and were told to search for Yuya since he’d hacked into the System.
But when I investigated the records, there’s no trace of Sakaki Yuya misusing the System.

Sora: Instead, he hacked it, so that he can save the victims before the rescue squad arrives.

Kurosaki: What do you mean?

Sora: I’m just wondering if the President is hiding something from us…

Kurosaki: I don’t care about his reasons…
As long as I can always have real and heated battles…
The people I hate the most are people who Duel for fun like Sakaki Yuya.

Sora: My my…
He’s one of those simple-minded and straight-laced people, huh…
I’m going to have a rough time…

Kurosaki: The Dueling that I’m seeking…

(Flashback)

Textbox: Three months ago, at an abandoned Duel Arena.

Nico: A skillful Duelist?

Reiji: Exactly. Be quick about it.

Nico: Well, we do have one.
He’s an extraordinarily strong one, too.
But he’s a bit odd.

Nico: He has a sharp mind, and superb physical abilities, but instead of participating in official matches, he chose to be in this place.

Nico: It’s as if money and applause mean nothing to him.

Reiji: Then, what is he seeking?

Nico: He seeks a serious and genuine battle…

Reiji: Oh?

Nico: …In this Underground Duel Coliseum!!!

Random Dude: I heard that you’re the strongest here, but you aren’t really that big of a deal!
I’m going to wipe out your Life by the next turn!

Kurosaki: A Duelist like you wouldn’t understand.
Having only this much Life…
The thrill of being pushed to the edge…

Kurosaki: …Is what makes me feel alive!
Being able to survive an ordeal is the zenith of pleasure itself!

(Kurosaki defeats Random Dude)

Reiji: What he wants is overcoming hurdles to achieve victory…
Like a hungry wolf that wanders in the barren wasteland…

Reiji: If you want, I can let you experience true thrill.

Kurosaki: What?

Reiji: I want you to lend me a hand.

Reiji: I need you to capture a certain boy!

(Back to the present)

Kurosaki: Sakaki Yuya…You’d better be able to quench my thirst!

Kurosaki: Decoy, show me pictures of Sakaki Yuya.

Decoy: My pleasure, master.
Kurosaki: There’s not many clues about him…

Kurosaki: Zoom in on this girl…

Kurosaki: I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before…
Decoy, go on the Net and search for every photo related to her.

Decoy: You got it.

Yuzu: All right!
First off, we need to decide on your catchphrase.

Yuya: Hah?

Yuzu: I mean, isn’t your catchphrase kind of lame?
I mean, “The fun has just begun!”?
As your manager, I’m a little concerned.

Yuya: You keep saying you’re my manager and whatnot,
But do you even know how to Duel?

Yuzu: Don’t give me that attitude!
My father teaches a Dueling class, you know!
And I’m super-good at calculation.
I was even the runner-up for a mental arithmetic tournament, you know!
It was a long time ago…

Yuya: Heh…

Yuya: That’s amazing.
So, who’s the winner of the tournament?

Yuzu: Eh…I’m pretty sure it was…

Kurosaki: Hiiragi Yuzu…
The only daughter of Hiiragi Shuzou, the principal of Shuzou School.
She’s the girl from back then, huh?

Shuzou: Where is Yuzu right now?
Seriously, that girl…huh?
Yuzu!?

Shuzou: Um…Who are you?

(Computer beeps)

Yuzu: What?

Yuya: Looks like it detected something.
I can monitor the Net that runs throughout the world from here.
So I’ll be able to know when information relating to me or Genesis Omega Dragon pops up.

Yuya: Somebody posted a message on an underground website.
There’s a video attached.

Yuzu: Hmm…?

Shuzou: Um…Who are you?

Yuya: Ah. A Duel has begun.
Oh. He lost in an instant. This old man is pretty weak, isn’t he?

Yuzu: Dad!

Yuya: EEHH!?

Yuzu: Ah…The image of our awesome school is ruined…

Yuya: Hey! That’s not what you should worry about.

Kurosaki: Tell Sakaki Yuya.
If he wants to take this man back, he has to go to the valley in the soccer field.

Yuzu: What was that just now!?
Don’t tell me…he took my dad hostage!?

Yuto: Seriously…This is because you got involved in unnecessary stuff.

Yuya: It’s not my fault!
Still, he chose to go after a person who has nothing to do with me at all, huh…

Yuzu: We have to send this video to the police…!

Yuya: That won’t be possible. The video will delete itself after it is played.

Yuzu: This is terrible…Yuya!

Yuya: I know…I’m going there.

Yuzu: Um…
I know where this place is! It’s a soccer field, right?

Yuya: No. The place he designated is over here.
“The Valley of Lies,” which lies on the outskirts of Maiami City.

Yuzu: Eh? Is that so?

Yuya: What he said was a code directed toward me.
There’s no valley in the soccer field within the city.
What he meant is “sucker,” which is a magic vocabulary that refers to a technique, where you mislead your audience to think that your trick has failed.
In other words, “Valley of Lies.”

Yuya: Even if he issued a warning on the Net,
If he designated a place that anyone would know,
Then there’s a chance that other people would intrude, right?

Yuzu: I see…

Text: Outskirts of Maiami City, Valley of Lies.

Kurosaki: You finally arrived, huh?

Shuzou: Yuzu!

Yuzu: Dad!

Yuzu: You have no excuse for that Duel!

Shuzou: Eh!? That’s what you’re here for…!?

Yuzu: Taking people hostage is a cowardly tactic, don’t you know that!?

Kurosaki: Sakaki Yuya…since you’re here, I no longer have any use for that man.
You can take him back.

Kurosaki: Well then, why don’t you quench my thirst?

Kurosaki: Action Field, deploy!

Yuya: WHOAAAA!

Yuzu: Dad!

Yuya: Four Action Cards in the air!

Yuya: So…this is going to be an aerial Duel, huh?

Well, he TRIED to tell Crow, but after that little incident with Yuya, Crow didn't feel like listening.

It was only after Shun blatantly showed him that Crow got the hint.

But otherwise, at least Shun stopped being angry for once and hell, even smiled.

-----

Anyway, the script stuff.

[spoiler=stuff]

Yuzu's being cheap again; 100 yen/hr is equivalent to $0.81. You can't even buy off of the McD dollar menu with that much, and that says a lot.

At least Yuya sort of asked for minimum wage at 1000 yen ($8.14), or well lower than whatever we have now.

Shuzou got trashed in a duel; then again, his Deck wasn't developed enough.

Yuya's looking for a particular card; yeah, the acronym was a nice touch.

Shun fights Yuya next; let's see if he uses RRs, which he might.

[spoiler=Manga Chapter 4 thoughts]

Yuzu really doesn't understand what minimum wage is, this time paying 100 yen/£0.53 an hour. Stop being a funking cheapskate Yuzu.

At least Yuya understood what minimum wage is, asking for 1000 yen/£5.35 an hour. (for reference, over here £5.30 is minimum wage for 18-20 year olds)

Yuya is looking for a specific card.

We don't see Shun's deck this chapter, but we will next chapter. He probs will use RRs still.

[spoiler=83 Raw]All I can say is that Fusion Death Waltz is the best card for obvious reasons.

I dunno since its raw, but it almost seemed like JMR wanted to "program" Yuya like Sergei. Or something along those lines, considering how hard it is to really control Sergei

Other than that, not much else to say. I'm willing to admit I have an unhealthy obsession to see Yuri in action... That sounded a little better in my head...
