So, after Generation IV I thought Pokemon pretty much went downhill. B/W wasn't as great as I thought it would be, which led me to believe that B/W 2 wouldn't be great (which is why I never got it). Now that X/Y are out, I'd like to know for fanatics- do you like the older generations better (beginning of the Pokemon era through D/P [you could count HG/SS but I don't because they're remakes of Gold and Silver]), or do you prefer the newer generations from Black/White onward?

Can't answer. I keep liking the additions and stuff they keep adding on more and more, and story wise, BW and XY (not BW2) were easily my favorite, but I have still by far played Gen I & III (including the Gen I remakes) the most, followed by Gen IV (Which includes the Gen II remakes). Dunno why but I don't think I've overall played Gen II that much. The customizations easily make XY have the best player characters. Anyway, I can't answer because I like each Gen more for different reasons, and so now I can't really say if I can actually narrow down a favorite Gen specifically.

Personally, I'm a lover of Generation III. Hariyama, Aggron, Manectric, Sharpedo, Milotic, Walrein, and Metagross have always been top of the list for me.

I thought it was too easy to level up in Black / White, which I didn't like. Apparently B/W 2 mirrored the first two, although there are a few differences between the two, so I decided not to get it. The Elite 4 / Champion seemed to be a walk in the park in B/W, so I didn't feel as if I had a challenge with them, versus in Emerald I felt as if I had to earn my way up (despite the fact that one could just catch Rayquaza then go).

Now I might consider buying X or Y seeing as I just want it for the simple fact that it's the first 3D Pokemon game. However, I've heard that sometimes logic is broken in X/Y- like if a Pokemon is down to 1-HP and takes an attack it has a chance to stay up because it loves its trainer enough. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is that's gonna make me think less of it.

Those kinds of things are due to Pokemon Amie, as far as I'm aware. If you want Sylveon, you need to use it once, but if you don't want that happening, you don't ever really have to touch it.

Gen III was probably my least favorite, I think because I just wasn't as fond of Hoenn as the other regions.

Regarding Pokemon design through the generations, I can't say if any one is better or worse than any other. Each one has its ups and downs in terms of Pokemon, but it's not like Game Freak is running out of ideas for them or anything.

Everyone has their opinion about generations, so that's fine. Hoenn just stuck out to me the most, and naturally along with that the Pokemon.

Oh certainly not lol. There's definitely gonna be more, no doubt.

But the essence is the same.  It's foolish to say that you liked it then but now it's terrible.

The idea is the same, but the meat surrounding that skeleton of a system has altered quite a bit. Unless you're talking about Gen IV-on, which more or less refined what we had.

Can't really say I have a favorite generation, though I have more stuff/Pokemon that I like in Gen 3-5; two of them (Latias/her brother) were first legends to receive genders [Gen 3], storyline in RSE was great (despite glitches but all of the gens have some form of it) and the later gens made everything neater (stat/move-wise).

Though I got in on the games relatively late (late Gen 3 to mid Gen 4; when the split already happened), so haven't played RBY/GSE [though I guess HGSS makes up for that to some extent]; meaning that I have to get used to the physical/special split not existing when I continue to play XD.

Gen 6 is okay (though since it's about 2 months old, hasn't really sunk in yet). TBH, I preferred the 17 types we already had from the Gen 2 era, but I'm getting used to Fairies (though a few of them I don't like appearance-wise)

I'm with you. Pokemon have really been going downhill for me since Gen IV. I can't even watch the Diamond/Pearl Anime, so it really started dropping at that point. Pokemon's names and looks also started get down-right pathetic.

And the story really shifted to be more like for a 6 year old, but I guess that makes sense.

I like Gen III the most, but that's because it was the first and so far the only Pokemon game I have actually finished (beat the E4).

Gen IV is a close second for introducing the physical/special split, and bringing an evo for Tangela, one of my favorite Pokemon from Gen I.

On the other hand, I have not played the storyline of X/Y, but I like some of the things that Gen VI brought: the stat adjustments on old Pokemon, the buff for Poison-type by turning the new Fairy-type weak against it, and of course a couple of the new Pokemon.

I like how you have 2 options instead of say the correct 6.

Anime I stop in Gen 2.

Games I don't really have any prefer Gen in the main games. Although if XD/Colo count then Gen III is my favourite just for those 2 games. Plus that Gen was home to the most useful game ever Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Box.

I have to admit I love the number of glitches in Gen I, I would love to abuse the Mew/Experience Overflow glitch and even the Leech Seed/Toxic glitch. And the whole hype around Lavender Town Syndrome, which obviously doesn't exist, but is fun.

  • 3 weeks later...

Gen III remains my favorite since that's where my love for the games really skyrocketed with Sapphire and LeafGreen. Colosseum and XD helped that as well; they really need a new game.

I can't say one way or the other either since I love the new additions added on each time, but the game's the same throughout, so I'll always enjoy it.
