Forum-wide Roleplay Planning Thread

Recommended Posts

This thread is wholly for the sake of planning out what we should do, the mechanics, worldbuilding, and etc., and is not an interest check or anything of that sort. Originally intended as a PM to Phosphorus, I decided that it would be much more productive if I posted it instead as a thread so you guys can voice your objections and give your input.

Through a poll a few months back, it was made clear that fantasy is a very popular genre and thus will be the genre of this RP. The setting will be a grand D&D/TES-esque world for maximum freedom and creativity, as is the trademark of the genre. Imagine awe-inspiring landscapes, masterful castles, sprawling ruins, tumultuous climates and the like.

Issues we need to deal with are below. Feel free to object and suggest your own ideas.

  • How will the multiple threads work? How will we remain all synchronized?

There will be an entire new subforum dedicated to this RP with its own OoC. In the OoC, Phosphorus and I shall post the World Information (which will be constantly updated, post in the thread for stuff that you want us to update, this thread will also contain the rules) as well as an Announcements thread, which will be for world events, it will be locked and only updatable by us mods.

We will probably have an overlying storyline to tie everything together and have world events (see below) that will affect everyone, but you people will be able to create your own smaller storylines, where you would create your own OoC thread and sign-ups and go on your own adventures. For bigger, grander things that would probably affect more than just your thread, PM me or Phosphorus, preferably both.

Now the greatest problem we face is synchronization and time. I think we will create an actual calendar for this world and all posts must include a timestamp on them. As for how IC shall work, we have an option of either opting for an IC thread for each area in use or have each OoC thread group create their own OoC. Combining both, here's my idea: If an area should go out of use, I think rather than leaving it there to rot, if the area is predominantly used by a particular adventuring group (I shall use this to refer to characters in the same OoC) they can simply change the title and the thread is then used for a new area. This way, if groups' paths should intersect, they can converge and shift over to the new area.

  • What is the world's state? What is the grand storyline?

This RP will probably have an overlying storyline to tie us all together. Phosphorus has his own ideas to incorporate, but one of the ideas I suggested a while back is a world divided and fragmented by dangerous areas filled with a seemingly endless population of monsters and within these areas, those who die become undead. There are these towers that will create safe areas and ward off monsters and civilization is built around these towers. The neutral Mage's Guild has found out a way to restore destroyed towers (which there are many in the wilderness) and thus expand available living space. Expeditions are planned to set out into the wilderness and reclaim ancient lands, there will be lots of tough terrain, monsters, and ruins. For the political fantasy lover, civil war breaks out on who holds claim to these new lands.

  • What level of magic and combat would be commonly available in this world?

We won't go into anime-esque territories here as things would get too crazy. Strength and speed and such will be the same as normal, with certain races having advantage in some terms to others. Magic would require extensive training and/or education to use and be on the level of stuff like Skyrim or Forgotten Realms. God-like beings and monsters naturally can have much greater power, however no player character may be such a being.

  • How dark should this be?

I think each adventure can have its own PG tag (either PG-13 or PG-16, nothing above that) and decide for itself. To prevent this from getting to levels like Berserk and make some people uncomfortalbe, the overall mood won't be too dark.

Also considering to make everyone take a Mary Sue litmus test.

If you want some of your own ideas incorporated speak up. (You will still be able to after the roleplay starts, but I'd like some thoughts now)

For people that like lone wolf/wanderer esque characters such as myself how would interaction affect us? Would it completely disallowed as is we could have such a character?

At first glance, I was about to say I didn't see the point of it, but then I realize that you would still be affected by world events and such. I'm not entirely sure as RP rules usually state that you need at least 3 people. I personally see no problem with it.

Mechanics sounds like a job. What exactly are we applying mechanics to and how are we gonna implement them?

As for worldbuilding, are you talking about an overworld sketch? Or just a paragraph describing the layout, history, and significance of each location? ...Or both?

As in how things work.

You guys are all free to put in what you want for places in the world. Culture, history, etc. Suggest them here in this thread.

I suppose the idea is that the character still *exists* while not doing anything noteworthy.

Gives a reason for a person to run multiple characters, in fact.  Say, when the RP starts, I make three characters, and only use one in an ongoing adventure.  I may post occasionally with the other two, but only to react to news of the world or the like.  Then, let's say a storyline would cross paths with my second character.  He could show up, do some things, but in that storyline, he's a minor character, so he eventually leaves, and the rest of the group continue on.  Later on, I decide that I'm ready to use my third character in a story, but no new storylines are being made.  I could have her join with an ongoing storyline as a new ally or opponent or something, and go on to be one of the major players there.  Then my first character's adventure ends, so I decide to create a new thread, this time using my second character as one of the players.

Then, let's say this storyline merges with another one.  In particular, it merges with the storyline that the second char was a minor character in.  Now he could be like.  "Oh yeah, I know these guys.  There was this incident, and then we went our separate ways."

When this starts up, I'm going to milk this kind of cross-interaction for all its worth.  It'd be a shame to have a shared world and not take advantage of what it offers.

I already have the worldbuilding on my iPad, so if it wasn't one of the things that got accidentally deleted I should be able to post that. Some theme to the world would be nice, though, like something roughly approximating an Earth-based culture.

Not entirely sure what you mean by a theme.

Well, if we use the idea of the fragmented civilizations, perhaps we can have various cultures that developed while separated by the danger areas. Very little trade is able to happen as few trading caravans should really be able to pass through and thus it is severely unprofitable. Only the bravest of adventures dare go far enough to travel from area to another. How's that?

Know that everything I am saying right now can be considered no more than brainstorming. Phos will post what he has some time.

What kind of anomalies will be there?

All sorts any sorts. Anything can happen.

That leads to another major question: Are the anomalies naturally occurring, or is there a source that is considered the main antagonist?

Who knows.

Well, that'll make designing the stages to be quite easier.

As for the world itself, is everything connected by land (Pangaea model), or it's more like our current world, thus requiring ships to explore the most of it?

Most water is danger area.

It's only areas confined within the protection of the towers that is safe.

Doesn't mean there can't be aliens in it. :D

Also, the waters... the crash-landed ship might've been carrying a biohazardous chemical to be analyzed and possibly used for technological advancement, but as they were being incinerated from the pressure of the fall, the cavity that held said chemical fell into the sea, releasing it and altering the sea-life into dangerous abominations.
