Hey guys,

 

so I've been thinking about creating a 'fake generation' of Pokemon, a fake region etc. You know, all that good stuff and I thought I'd start up a thread here on the forum regarding it so people can get involved through suggesting things they'd like to see and maybe even contribute in terms of design (god knows it's been several years since I last picked up a pencil and drew something so would be nice to have some help).

Anyways, in order to kick things off I thought I'd share some initial ideas I have for some things and there are also a few polls open already for you to get involved with some of the early decisions.

 

 

The Region
Not much thought has gone into the actual region so far but I'm thinking of basing it either on England, Egypt or Greece. There are things I like about the prospects both countries can supply in terms of inspiration but I can't properly make up my mind about it so I thought I'd leave the decision with you guys! Remember that your decision will completely impact the types of Pokemon you'll be seeing later on and (especially) legendaries and plot.

Plot

I have gone into this with the aspiration to change things up a little from how things usually play out in the games and anime. I don't want to get into major detail as I just have a skeleton of an idea so far, but I thought I'd bulletpoint some things at least so you can get an idea of what I'm toying with here.

- Character's parents have recently divorced and he/she is living in the capitol with their father.

- Working with the divorce theme the father decides to get the character a 'pet' to cheer him/her up.

- Instead of setting out on a journey to do field work for the professor, the character runs away from home and escapes the city through the sewers (makes for interesting first encounters) along with their new 'pet'.

- I'm toying with the idea of them getting the pokedex due to joining the 'evil team' with a possibility of having the professor be a part of said team.

 

Gyms and Pokémon League [Elite 4]
I haven't thought too much of this as of yet but I do know the final gym is to be a Normal-type gym which is located in a hospital / the pokemon centre itself and the leader would be a nurse Joy (probably).

The Elite 4 would be different from the other regions however, as they are specialising in a certain stat that Pokemon show prowess in, rather than an actual type. Their specialities would be: HP, Speed, Attack and Defense while the Champion would have a mixed team without any specific theme connected to type or stats (they'd simply have strong pokemon or something).

 

Starter Pokemon

As the starter comes from a 'pet shop' I have decided to run with a theme of having the starters themselves be based on animals that can typically be found in a pet shop. I have decided against using cats and dogs as inspiration here as there already are several canine and feline pokemon, as have I decided against the use of snakes, turtles and lizards as all of those have already been used as inspiration for starters.

I have narrowed it down to a few different animals but I've decided to leave the final cuts to you guys (and feel free to suggest other animals as well as there may be a few I haven't thought of!). So make sure to cast your vote and then I'll get to actually designing some rough drafts for the starters next week!

This sounds awesome. Starter, hmmm. I can't draw, but let me butch this to you: a water turtle. Just kidding. What about a water-Dark frog named Tadow

 

Glad you like the sound of it, it's basically a way for me to get back to drawing again (it's been years, but hopefully I can still produce decent looking stuff!).

Lol you joker, we literally just had a water/dark frog :P

Exit:woops, didn't see the poll. One of the first encounter pokemon could be the above though..

Cause we totally didnt JUST get a Water/Dark frog-type.

Sorry... Haven't read about or played X/Y... :,/... Okay, what about a poison/fire type bunny? It's literally one of the only unused type combos, and would be awesome.

that sounds interesting and I'll definitely consider it :)

 

OH AND PS
Would be awesome if people voted on three options for the starters as the three with most votes will be used :D

I already know what a guppy would be. 

I'm thinking of a fire hamster because it's cool. 

A grass bunny, due to a nature kind of thing; the 1st thing I think of when I see a bunny is nature and grass.

A grass-type dog could work; we already have a fire-type dog Pokemon and Guppy works well with water.

If you want help with dual-types, if you're going to make them dual-type, you can try here for ones that aren't used.

 

Have you thought of legendaries yet?

Starters: Bunny (grass is a probable choice for its typing, though surprise us. Fire/Water rabbits will be cool though), Hamster and probably a guppy/whatever fishes you'd see in the pet store. As a side note to the bunny starter, make sure its attacking stats will be decent, unlike the other two that currently exist (base 76 [Lopunny] and 50 [Diggersby])

 

As for the region itself, since Kanto-Sinnoh have been based on Japan/Asia (obviously), Unova is the USA and Kalos is France/Europe; there's a lot of choices you can try. I would say use the countries around the Pacific Rim but not sure if they got a lot to offer for your ideas. Or you can do Australia/New Zealand. But England/Greece (and to an extent, Rome) don't sound like bad choices (all have known landmarks). Or you can do Middle East (which to an extent will include Egypt), since a good amount of early civilizations existed there.

It's asking for a 4x weakness to Earthquake if you do that. (Though it will combat the new Fairy types that are around now)

I'm considering to do another poll in a few days where you all can vote on the typings of them, I have some ideas for most combinations but I thought it would be nice to keep going with the whole community engagement for it :)

Yeah the main ideas will be linked to a specific country but I will probably combine them with other countries with similar history/mythology/flora/fauna etc. So if Greece would win I'd probably combine it with Italy and Cyprus as an example :)

Actually, I've been toying with all types of variations for whatever animal ends up being the starters (yes that includes fire & grass typed guppies). Like I've said earlier (missed this message before, sorry) I will be opening up a poll so people can vote on the primary typings of each starter so we might end up with a grass guppy, fire hamster and water bunny in the end, which is fun because it'll force me to be as creative as possible! :D

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out when it comes to creating their evolutions!

I haven't given much thought to legendaries at this point given the region's inspiration hasn't been decided yet, but I do have ideas for whatever we end up with

THE POLLS HAVE NOW CLOSED AND THE RESULTS ARE IN!

The region's starters will be based on:

Hamster [total of 8 votes]
Guppy [total of 7 votes]
Bunny [total of 5 votes]

Regarding the region:

The poll ended up in a draw between England and Greece and as such another poll regarding this will be put up following this weekend. If you want to cast your vote now, just head over here and leave your answer :)

New polls regarding the typings of the [basic form] starters will go live in a few minutes and will run across the whole weekend.

Remember that you will be able to vote twice should you also head over to http://fauxkemon.tumblr.com ;)

 

 

 

EDIT:
Not sure if there's some form of error allowing people to submit their vote after only voting in one of the polls or if the guppy poll for some reason has gained 'ghost votes'. Either way this is hella confusing - anyone knows what could be going on?

Bunny/Rabbit: Water or Fire

Guppy: Would be kinda weird if it weren't Water-typed, but it's not first time we see Pokemon with a different type than what their real life counterparts are attributed to.

Hamster: Grass-type

Yeah I've removed the poll app and added links to an external website so voting can be done there instead. A bit more complicated but at least I know the results will be accurate now.

The other day I was brainstorming some ideas for Pokemon that you could come across in the first route, which will be a sewer, and while I haven't made any art for these Pokemon yet I did write their Pokedex entries so that I wouldn't forget my concept for them. Of course if anybody would like to submit design for these they are welcome to [I'll make sure that the 'submit' function on the Tumblr is opened later today].

 

There is also another poll open that will run for a week [at least] where you can vote for the concept of the last possible encounter in the sewers. Hope you guys enjoy the concepts for these Pokemon and that you'll vote in the various polls as well. Remember, some of them will be closed on Monday!


POKEDEX ENTRIES - REGIONAL BUG [1]
 

At the sewage route the player will be able to run into one of the region’s many bugs. This one is based on maggots and the common fly and I imagine they might be the tiniest of all the known Pokemon.


1st Stage [Maggot]
[Bug]
Immunity
[Name] can be found wherever there’s something rotting, feeding on it. While considered vermin by many today, historically their presence was viewed as a blessing as it was believed to warn people of food that was poisoned or would cause disease if eaten.


2nd Stage [Fly]
[Bug/Dark]
levitate
Using their speed, size and vision to their advantage, they move around swiftly and generally unnoticed. While they can be found almost anywhere, they tend to nest wherever there’s a smell of rot or death.

 

 

POKEDEX ENTRIES - REGIONAL RODENT

 

The region’s rodent will be a dual type [Normal/Poison] based on a sewer rat. It will be an early encounter as the first ‘route’ will be the capitol’s sewers. I have yet to come up with a name and design for them but I do think that their unique [I think] typing makes up for the fact that we're getting another ''rat pokemon''.
 

1st Stage
[Normal/Poison]
Stench / Storm Drain
They live in large colonies in the sewers, feeding off of the things that are flushed down and disposed of. It tends to get aggressive and violent if washed.

2nd Stage
[Normal/Poison]
Storm Drain
The filth it covered itself with as a [1st Stage] has become part of it’s body, giving it control over the fumes it exudes. It shows affection by making a mess.
