Halloween Event Recap

Legend Zero

Recommended Posts

This thread will be used to discuss the event in general.

Things I learned
1. Have more backups and/or recruit more then you want. I actually wanted 10 monsters initially, so all is good.
2. Explanation improvement
3. Crack down on spam
4. Give more time for accounts to be created. I figured 2-3 days would be enough, but was mistaken.

Please give useful feedback, your thoughts, and anything else concerning the event.

EDIT:
Members Who Voted: 26

Most Guessed Correctly: Mugendramon and Striker

Most Guessed Wrong: Sumire

Most Guessed As Wrong Monster: Dem as Stanley & Tormented as Upyr

Average Amount of Correct Guesses: 3

Second Place: FinalFan
First, don't make the event first come, first serve regarding monsters. Instead, have people pitch you ideas via PM, and select from that pool the ones you think would work.

Second, give feedback regarding the answers. The very minimum that you could have done was tell us how many we got right with our guesses. With the limited number of guesses, it actually would have given us a reason to plot and strategize.

Third, ban the original user accounts for a week so the monsters can work together. That way, the monsters don't have to come up with everything on their own.

Fourth, allow, once a day, for people to vote on a monster's identity, and if they guess it right, that monster is outed and is kicked out of the game. It gives stakes for the monsters to do well (and not spam), and for the players to have some interactivity.

Fifth, NO MODERATOR MONSTERS. We found out the hard way on Day One why this was a bad idea.

Sixth, give us a reason to be scared of these guys. Have strange things happen to players who are getting too close. Make the site feel like it was actually being taken over.

And Seventh, make it so the monsters have to be active the entire week.

I honestly thought the posting habits of the Monsters would be easy enough to get at least 4. After Wednesday I realized that was a mistake, but didn't feel right about changing the rules halfway through. Thanks for reminding me.

We will never have an event that takes away the use of the site for member's main account. This will never change.

The event was fantastic, but I did note a number of issues some people had with it. There simply wasn't much immersion with it.

While I enjoyed playing under the sheet, I still think we could have done more to help immerse people in the event more. I think an active "Social Area" would definitely play in that favour, alas not many people seemed eager on participating with it.

That was what Daniel was complaining about all of the first day: immersion.

He didn't feel scared or spooked. Halloween is supposed to do that.

There is no way to scare someone on the internet except:

Actual threat to your security

Creepypasta

And one of those was not the best option to have went down.

Ain actually did a good job of building up his despair to become a Witch.
I was thoroughly creeped out by that.

First, don't make the event first come, first serve regarding monsters. Instead, have people pitch you ideas via PM, and select from that pool the ones you think would work.

I think that's actually what happened in part.

I mean, I don't think the volunteers exceeded the intended number too much, but at the same time, pretty much all members being monsters are relatively active at more than one place in the forum and have been around for a while.

Second, give feedback regarding the answers. The very minimum that you could have done was tell us how many we got right with our guesses. With the limited number of guesses, it actually would have given us a reason to plot and strategize.

That's a good idea in my opinion. Although the shortcoming would be that that would be too much work for the one in charge. Not just checking everything that had to be checked in this event, but also keep a clock for all guessers. So it'd also depend on the will of the organizer.

For starters, making sure all guesses are in a single PM for each person, to have stuff be more clean. I have no idea if this was how it went anyways, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to spell it out as a rule either.

Third, ban the original user accounts for a week so the monsters can work together. That way, the monsters don't have to come up with everything on their own.

Wait, what? No, please no. Part of the event actually depended on us poping out once in a while into our real accounts so that people don't have to go look for just inactive banned members. It in theory is for comparison with someone up-to-date. Especially since the history of posts and threads of each user in this site doesn't really go that far back if you go check their profiles.

Also, I don't wanna get banned.

Fourth, allow, once a day, for people to vote on a monster's identity, and if they guess it right, that monster is outed and is kicked out of the game. It gives stakes for the monsters to do well (and not spam), and for the players to have some interactivity.

I disagree on this one. Kicking the monsters out has a few shortcomings. You only have so many volunteers, and kicking everyone out at from the first time someone is guessed right will only decrease on the game. It's better to have the set number of monsters, and each person trying to guess their favorite monsters without having to worry about a first-come-frist-served system.

Also, the most well known ones will be probably guessed earlier, so you'll have the dullest part of the contest by the end of the event.

The issue about the spam is entirely on the monsters that participated on it. Regardless of the contest rules, a line of responsibility must be traced.

I do agree that there should be a way to make it more interactive, but that method is arguable.

Fifth, NO MODERATOR MONSTERS. We found out the hard way on Day One why this was a bad idea.

Sixth, give us a reason to be scared of these guys. Have strange things happen to players who are getting too close. Make the site feel like it was actually being taken over.

So you didn't like mod monsters messing up with your account's rep and post count, but you want monsters to have powers to change the site?

Also, depending on what you are thinking when you want it to look as if the monsters are taking over, you might be asking for something that not even mods can do.

And Seventh, make it so the monsters have to be active the entire week.

Life gets in the way. You might as well be requiring the hunters to guess once a day or be kicked out of the event while you are at it.

My only input is that the event needs more time. You gave them about a week to establish themselves when they should have had a month. Start planning the month before and try to allow them the entire month for the event itself.

That's actually a really good idea. And then give people one guess a day.
