Alternative going mainstream...

Now adays, it seems like every hipster on the face of the earth discovers a band the moment it becomes popular. For example, a girl at my school claimed she had discovered Fun. about a few days it became popular. For those of you who don't know, Fun. started years before Tonight. This is a thread to talk about said bands, make alternative recommendations, and predict the next Alt. Mainstream band.

The whole indie/mainstream thing annoys me. Both people who claim indie music is king, and those who deride mainstream music. Not massively related to the topic, but a thought nevertheless.

I'd probably note that when you say alternative, you probably mean indie. Unless you are actually referring specifically to alternative rock bands, instead of just general independent artists.

I can't think of any indie bands on the verge of breaking the mainstream market at the moment, but my first call would be to look at the supporting acts of any big tours.

That's a good viewpoint. Good music is good music, regardless of the popularity of an artist.

One band I'd quite like to see break out (I hope that they will eventually; they have a relative amount of media exposure in Australia) is Strange Talk. Australian new wave/synthpop band, with flourishes of indie rock. Reminds me of somewhere between Passion Pit and Foster the People. It's not a likely candidate, so this is really just a recommendation for anyone into that sort of music.

I assume that Joey Bada$$ will break out into mainstream rap after he releases his debut next year.
