.Rai
What is the policy on general art threads in Showcase, by the way? I probably should have checked before posting this thread, but oh well. I could post this in the team subforum, but it applies to everyone.I figure that, although production of new pieces in Showcase is in a phase of hibernation (I assume as part of our yearly phoenix-like life cycle; people are busy working and stuff), the actual interest in art itself isn't waning. Just our time. I thought I'd do something that at least promotes some artistic juices to flow in the forum, without being as time-intensive as making pieces to show: a survey.Feel free to answer any number of these questions, as little or as many as you like. Astolfo
What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most? I try my hand at tags, occasionally avis/logos. Tags are most enjoyable to me. Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to? I sort of want to learn how to try large pieces. I haven't done it ever. What programs do you use most often? Photoshop CS6, Illustrator CS6 What programs would you like to get/learn? I want Photoshop CC, but membershippppp ;3; Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession? I don't really know. I wish I could, but I'm not anywhere close to good enough for it. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)? Not really, unless when things don't work out occasionally, or i made an edit that can only be done destructively - apparently - and I've made an error. What time of the day do you most often design or make art? Whenever I have free time and inspiration. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art? View forums, listen to random music (whatever fits mood), chat with friends, look up resources, etc. What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples. .Rai/Night/LC/Catman/Alee/every other pro here that I can't immediately remember name of Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types? Not really; Tags/Logos/LPs Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions? Not really, but if I can, I want to. I don't have time or money or proximity usually. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend? No, because I don't know enough to really recommend stuff. The GFX pros? (all their work) Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital? Computer? Applications? Music? etcetera? Forums/Chat to help relieve strain? Toffee.
Felt like posting, with regards to the list-Avatars/TagsEhh, not really in the mood to try a new medium unless it interests mePhotoshop CS5/Occasionally MS.PaintNone that I can think ofMaybeCreative Block. Guh.As far as time of day goes, usually it's if I'm in the mood to make somethingPondering ideas/thinking of how to get that across; Music, occasionally, and it's usually videogame stuff.Usually it's some silly reason and/or gagI don't actively seek/look for it, but I prefer surrealI've been to a fair share of museums/galleriesHard to say. I've seen a lot that I like/can't really pick a favoriteAside from a computer, I don't really own any fancy art tools(tablets/etc)Advice? Meh. Airride
In order, each question "answered". I only really make art with graphite and colored pencils. Not really sure what you would classify it as, though. I want to learn/gain access to digital art, as in, doing it on a tablet or whatever. Unfortunately, I don't exactly have the funds for it... I use MS paint just to scan/tweak art. I'm not sure what I would want to use for if/when I can do my stuff digitally... (See above) Probably. Backgrounds, something not coming out right, Colors being crappy, etc... Whenever, but I PREFER night(Pre-Morning specifically, like at 4-5 am) I usually listen to music while coloring, but for the actual sketch/frame of the work, I prefer silence to help me to concentrate. I'll sometimes take breaks for food, but that's about it. A lot of my inspiration, mainly in design and style aspect, is from more established artists, both on dA and on pixiv (which is, where I get 90% of my avatars), who generally do stuff digitally in some way. The other part is usually from my own crazy life for the actual pieces. (I often interject what I am/was going through in my more recent art) I will sometimes look for art, but most of it's just stuff to use as reference for future artwork/avi archives. No, but I want to. ...Not that I can really think of. It all depends on your tastes, anyways. I wish I did... If you do Color Pencil art; GET A COLORLESS BLENDER. And also, Hobby Lobby or Michael's or whatever you have SHOULD sell some dual sided sharpeners that have a slot SPECIFICALLY for colored pencils (Forget what brand; they're green and orange in appearance). GET ONE. THEY ARE A GODSEND OF SHARPENING POWER. (Also color a single direction for one figure, including parts colored differently, then color it another direction until it is smooth that is usually how you get things to not look shitty. Also, IMO, but black outlines without stark, contrasting colors, looks really, really bad. Again, IMO.) (Now watch me have completely embarrassed myself out of stupidity/ignorance/whatever.) Tormented
What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most?: In all honesty I've tried my hand at most stuff, I enjoy making avatars though because seeing people use them is nice. Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to?: Really would like to learn how to create pieces that aren't just manipulating already pre-determined images, for example using a tablet and creating my own pieces. What programs do you use most often?: Photoshop What programs would you like to get/learn?: Illustrator Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession?: It would be interesting to do, but I doubt that it would be something I could pursue. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)?: I've never really had creative blocks and my time creating is often so varied it's difficult to give an answer. Most likely when I'm half asleep (midnight etc) What time of the day do you most often design or make art?: Midday assuming that I can be bothered to create anything there and then. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art?: I often listen to music or watch YouTube videos in the background. What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples.: It's interesting to say that I don't really have an inspiration of sorts, my inspiration is to improve. Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types?: I regularly view DeviantART, I usually just find myself looking at pieces (usually concepts completed by people with tablets) Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions?: No, I don't want to be rude but It bores me. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend?: http://behindtheveil.deviantart.com/ she does artwork for a game I play often. Also quite cute. Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital?: Other than my pc and laptop for designing, nope. I do not have any graphical tablets or anything of the kind. Any general tips about anything? General, or technical, if you want!: Assume that what you are doing is someone elses piece. By that I mean critique your own work.
Madsen
What is the policy on general art threads in Showcase, by the way? I probably should have checked before posting this thread, but oh well. I could post this in the team subforum, but it applies to everyone. General consensus used to be "yay general art woo" hype+absolutely no actual discussion at all. I figure that, although production of new pieces in Showcase is in a phase of hibernation (I assume as part of our yearly phoenix-like life cycle; people are busy working and stuff), the actual interest in art itself isn't waning. Just our time. I thought I'd do something that at least promotes some artistic juices to flow in the forum, without being as time-intensive as making pieces to show: a survey. I'm blaming my crappy ass PC not being able to run PS/Gimp and the fact that I'm a lazy and non-creative fuck. Feel free to answer any number of these questions, as little or as many as you like. It's mostly so others can see how his or her peers work, and stuff like that. Should be quick stuff. I like you, RaiBread. I like you. What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most? Tags. Too used to them to try something else, really. I enjoy manips and LPs, but after a point, they become very tedious to work on for me, which puts me off of them and in general lately it's been more of a chore to do things like that. I'll blame that on the crappy PC aswell. Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to? I'm young and haven't had the chance to experience many mediums, despite school, because what I've had access to has been very basic, or of low quality. I'm not one for much learning to be honest, so if I'd pursue this art stuff I'd try to build on what I know the very basics of. Watercolor is fun as fuck. What programs do you use most often? Photoshop. That's kinda it. What programs would you like to get/learn? Every other one. Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession? I can go on about this. Don't mind if this becomes a huge wall of text, now. The education system in Bosnia works in such a way that when I finish my primary school (6-15 years of age) I can chose, depending on how I do in my end of year exams the secondary school I go to. Now, I'm an excellent student by grades and the shit that's been holding me through school will continue to do so hopefully. Now, thinking about the future, going into art/design professionally seems like something I could do. I have that bit of talent which coupled with some effort could do good. Maybe. But, art schools are deemed weak schools, and my older brothers went to a general secondary school, (shitty translations of words all over the place!) which is pretty much the best choice if you want to go onto college. Anyway, to answer your question. Aspire to become an artist? No. Not at this point. Not full time. Maybe as a hobby of leisure, or an on-the-side job. But I don't think it'll be something I'll be able to do full-time, professional. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)? Anything? Try everything. I get overtaken by procrastination which gets in the way of both my art and school, my PC is quite shit, I've found myself to not be able to think creatively, and the expectations had of me crack me open. I'll not get onto this more, shit gets depressing. What time of the day do you most often design or make art? I rarely do, but it's when something springs to mind, or when I just force myself to do it. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art? I don't know--if I do anything, I do it sub-conciously (sp?). What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples. Nothing. Maybe everything. I don't take note of the source of my inspiration. Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types? Depends. Out in the city with some boring ass family? I'll rush to get to the street artists. Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions? Rarely. Broke as fuck 14 year old can't do much. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend? Eh. Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital? Wacom tablet and an expensive-ass set of Faber polychromos. This'll come in useful when I get to actually doing shit. Any general tips about anything? General, or technical, if you want! Don't do what I did. Seriously, keep at it. Work on your art. This post is depressive.
So Legit You Quit
What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most? Tags, avatars, and Custom Images Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to? Digital Painting, Painting, Etc. What programs do you use most often? Photoshop CS6 What programs would you like to get/learn? Illustrator CS6, Own it, don't know how to use it. Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession? It'd be a fun sort of thing to do. I don't nearly have the time though. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)? I'm stressed in general. Art is a sort of release. What time of the day do you most often design or make art? Night, when I get off work. Or when creativity strikes on an off day. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art? I'm always drinking tea, as most Texans do. And usually always listening to dubstep. What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples. xProphet, Nightwalker, Catman, .Ken, Madsen, Rai. Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types? I love just browsing though Deviant Art, or looking through photo galleries. Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions? Don't have time. Besides, wouldn't know where to find one. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend? xprophet.deviantart.com ; Old, but he's what made me want to start gfx. Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital? Computer, Phone? Any general tips about anything? General, or technical, if you want! Nah. chairman ali
What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most? I enjoy making every type of art there is. Currently I am into sewing my own clothing because the fashion industry is quite deluded and economically driven rather than creatively driven. I am starting to learn about fashion design—even though it has nothing to do with my major, more of a hobby—and how clothing are constructed. However, I mostly paint, draw and research (yes researching into art history and such. That is an art by itself). Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to? Airbrushing and photo-collage. I also do less of water colour and ink. I want to learn photo collage mainly because it is the IRL way of photo manipulation. Traditional art, to me, has become a focus to me. I love digital art but at the moment I left all my gadgets back at home and I am not financially able to buy anything. What programs do you use most often? Photoshop. What programs would you like to get/learn? Carrara, 3D Studio Max, Maya, Lightwave, Poser® Pro, Illustrator, ZBrush, Cheetah3D, Blender, Cinema4D, AutoCAD, Alias, and many more. Nearly all of the 3D programs are identical so it would take only 1 program to learn all of them Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession? Currently studying foundation in Art and Design. Pathway is either Fine Art or Illustration. So yes. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)? No. I use the ethics, teachings and morals of my religion & ideologies to get through whatever crisis I am at. What time of the day do you most often design or make art? There isn't a specific time. Art is a feeling, you construct what you want to whenever you want to. You shouldn't have a specific time period for it, although time management is good too, but sometimes if you do not feel like designing then it won't help much to put pen on paper. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art? Nothing. The voices of your own thoughts should be what is driving you forward. What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples. Books, all types. Other artworks, mainly old masters artworks. Poems. Meditation & imagination. Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types? Not generally but sometimes when commuting from place to place I take pictures of anything that seems good enough as an inspiration Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions? Yes. I have been to 2 in a month. I want to go to another one hosted for free in the university of Brighton's Grand Parade campus but I do not acquire the time for such a visit, sadly. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend? Go with the wind my friend. There should be no specific person, only a feeling of attractiveness. Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital? I used. Tablet, books (!!!!!!!!!!!), and traditional art tools. Any general tips about anything? General, or technical, if you want! I will edit this part later.
Thar
What types of art (tags, LPs, photomanips, etc.) do you make the most, or enjoy making the most? My recent works has been chalk drawings, but occasionally I will make some graphics. Are there any art mediums you haven't tried, or rarely do, and would like to learn how to? I'd love to learn line drawing, mainly as a follow-up for my desire to be good at drawing manga. What programs do you use most often? GIMP Do you aspire to do art/design/photography as a profession? Hobby? Yes. Profession? Depends. Maybe when I'm retired. Does anything about you and art cause stress (for example, creative block or not having enough time)? Creative block is only a minor issue. The real issue with me is finishing what I started. I'm always full of ideas, but it's getting everything on a canvas and making it look decent that I can almost never follow through on. It's really frustrating. What time of the day do you most often design or make art? Once the sun goes down, my creative juices start flowing, though not always through the right pipes. What do you usually do when designing or making art? Do you listen to music, if so, what? Eat/drink? View other art? Music is a very good creative influence. It helps me relax, and I will often hear a lyric in the song that triggers an idea. What or from where do you take inspiration from? Feel free to give examples. Everything. Being an engineering student, I can't help but pay attention to the details of everything I see, and it's these details that give me ideas on how they can be laid out differently to make a new setting. Do you actively seek out or look for art? If so, what types? Photography and fantasy paintings I cannot get enough of. It's just mind-blowing what people can make, and it often makes me wish I could take time to get better with my own work. Do you ever go to galleries, conventions or exhibitions? Not as often as I could. I don't go out much, and if I do, there's usually nothing much going on. Are there any artists or pieces of art you would recommend? Several, though none of which I can name. If a name or image comes up that rings a bell, I can bring them up. Do you own any electronics, accessories, tool, book, object etc. that you consider useful or even vital? Nope. The only thing remotely close to a useful tool that I could have is a tablet for the U-Draw game for PS3. The only real reason I bought it was because I thought I could use it on my computer, but I was wrong on that, I guess. Other tablets I could get cost a lot, and I'm not a walking stack of money. Any general tips about anything? General, or technical, if you want! I'm a guy who looks for tips. I can never give any considering I'm as rusty as an old nail at the bottom of the sea. Night
I was going to fill one of these out, but alternatively I've got a much better idea. Working on a video basically answering these questions rather in-depth, whilst I work on a manip piece. That way I can get this done and finally make a video showcasing my mannerisms when working, something I've wanted to do for a while but never actually found a reason to. Thought it might be a good idea.
