No. It's a temporary thing, so it's more like Beast Spirits with the ability to 'Slide Evolution' into their other forms.
Mega Digimon, on the other hand, become that form and stay that way(Or at least until the plot says otherwise).
I'm pretty sure using any move that doesn't deal damage puts it in Shield mode.

Sometimes Mega Digimon change back after the battle is over.

Iris was a pain in the ass in general.

And, as I plow through the 2nd gym, I am reminded as to how much I hate the buff Sturdy got

I liked Iris' champ theme.

This isn't the first time a Champion has given you a Pokemon...

Right. Steven gives you a Beldum after you beat him.

The restaurants are pretty great. They give darn good experience, at least at the levels I'm at, and the rewards more than make up for the cost of entering.

Time to try with a Luck Incense equipped and get stuck in. I have access to the Lumiose boutique now, so let's make some money.

That's just the mentality of Digimon; Bizarro Pokemon.
Pokemon tend to loose their cuteness as they evolve and become more serious/stronger/mature/etc; It's a representation of growth/development. It reflects the trainer's own abilities as these are Pokemon you've raised with your own hands.
Plus, the cuteness factor tends to be the more prominent point. I mean, why else do most of Ash's Pokemon never evolve? That, or they evolve just enough to still retain their cuteness.

Digimon capitalizes on the cutness factor by having them only Deus-ex-Machina to their strongest forms when they need to fight things, then go back to being Pikachus afterwords.

Guys guys guys guys guys guys guys, game-breaking bug. Very important, read this.

Regarding this, if it ever happens to you, a couple ways that might fix it are:

1. Restart your 3DS and try loading up the save file without an SD card in.

2. Upon starting the save file, as you begin to hear the music but while the screen is still black, mash the Home button, and when you go back to the game it should work.

Gonna need a Dusk Stone to evolve my Doubledge.

Speaking of which, my current Team (subject to change when I challenge the last Gym)

Gang (Pangoro, M, Lv45)
Marcus (Machoke, M, Lv46)
Tristan (Chesnaught, M, Lv 54)
King (Hawlucha, M, Lv 55)
Caliburn (Doubledge, M, Lv53)
Gabriel (Pyroar, M, Lv54)

Also, in reserve:
Tobias (Blastoise, M, Lv48)
Purps (Granbull, M, Lv 58)(from Wonder Trade)
Alba (Alakazam, M, Lv 51)

... and a few others that I may/may not need to raise more....
