Pokemon X & Y (Post Launch)

Lets be honest, the worse starters are the Johto starters. None of the pokemon are that good or look that cool. And, since I'm on the subject

1) 4th Gen I hate Infernape and his pre-evolutions. But Torterra is amazing and has done amazing things for me, and I quite like Empoleon so I'll let it slide.

2) 3rd Gen I have to agree here, they were all really great. Even if Sceptile was less cool than Grovyle.

3) 6th Gen I don't know, besides Greninja I was underwhelmed by the starters. They were good but... Meh.

4) 1st Gen Middle road is best for these guys, they are still really cool and useful but fairly unexciting.

5) 5th Gen People tend to not like these guys, and as the only one I was actually interested in was Serperior, I can agree.

6) 2nd Gen I love these guys, and not just because Totodile was my first Pokemon. They're probably my favorite to be honest. But no, not very useful. At least not in the higher tiers (The only ones people seem to care about).

So I'd say, personally, as to which ones I liked best, Put 2nd Gen on top, push everything else down one level. And swap 6th and 1st Gen.

Which, as I love Gen 5 and 6 a lot, surprised me, but thinking on it that's where I'd put it.

yes but they're better designed

Also, Megas have Gen 1 on top. 3rd Gen has Blaziken still rolling and Swampert on the down-end. 4 gen has Infernape, which is now outclassed. 6th gen has Greninja

So Ima go 1st, 3rd, 6th, 4th, 2nd, 5th.

TBQH I don't like their designs that much. Meg is actually my least favorite of all the starters. Ty just feels a bit generic. I do like him, but just not as much as the other Fire Starters. I like Gatr, but his bottom half always looked fat. Also, I kind of head canon Emboar being a Fire/Dark type since I think that is the only type that works for him. That is a bit of a cheat, I'll give you. Regardless, 2nd and 5th are pretty close.

I think to bring the Megas in is kind of cheating since it puts the other 5 gens at such a huge disadvantage. Ape is still in OU though. Might have gotten worse, but he is still very useable. Also, Empoleon is actually a really solid pokemon. It did great work for me in OU during gen 4 and should be really good in UU this gen.

I can also see swapping Gens 1 and 6. For me Saur has never been amoung my favorite pokemon and Toise is just really simple. Not going to lie 1st is where it is because of Charizard. I like Sniv and Sam more than Saur and Toise.

Also, when I think about it, I keep coming back to the same problem with the Water Starters. Something about their lower half always through me off. No idea why this is, but if I were to guess it would have something to do with the older spirits. Also, I brought this up when Charizard Y was first shown off, but I find I like the thinner designs more than bulky. Not a hard or fast rule, but its just something I've noticed about myself.

The Chikorita Line is my favorite by far. Take that back lol. 5th Gen was really special to me. I hated Oshawott at first but grew to love the little guy.... Picked Snivy as my starter though as I am sure that everyone else did. Once I eventually pick up X, I will be going Fennekin.

I need to learn how to quote better to make things easier... Anyway.

1.) Of course, it's all personal preference. But I adore Meganium. It's freaking adorable, I could see it being something I'd want as a pet. And Bayleaf just looks awesome IMO. Typhlosion is generic I'll give you that. But it has a charm in its simplicity. It's not overcomplicated, and sleek. Looks dangerous and powerful without being overwhelming. And Feraligatr.... Okay yeah that thing looks weird. But Totodile is still one of my favorites. (Also I give them props for being the only Gen that has all single type final evolutions)

2.) I agree that Megas would be unfair to judge by (though it can't be ignored). I just don't like Infernape, I can't deny it's good in battle... Just never liked it much. Empoleon however is great and I like it. And I have to put out that my Torterra in RU (still need to nickname this guy...) has been doing some amazing and unexpected things.

3.) Venusaur is my favorite of the starters so there's a big difference. I figured you liked Charizard SOMETHING told me, no idea what.... But it wasn't anything great for me, except Zard-Y is amazing. I just never liked Samurott much. Something just rubs me the wrong way about it.

4.) And the thinner design thing is probably why you have an issue with water starters. They tend to have bulky lower bodies, mostly because they're designed to be effective in water. I probably prefer bulky Pokemon more often so we're basically at the opposite end here. Venusaur, Meganium, and Torterra are my favorite.... Grass type is my favorite type obviously. So that explains our differences in taste I think.

For the first two runs on White 2, Oshawott has been my starter. Third run was Tepig (which I named Tonton; think you can figure out where I got the name from).

No Snivy for me though (I have one on X, but it's Brave nature [now wish I didn't get rid of my Impish one, because speed cuts suck])

----

I mostly prefer the starters that have a decent attacking stat and speed (preferably a combination of both, but I can work with bulky stuff).

So, that would mean stuff like Charizard, Blaziken (with his Mega Stone), Sceptile, Infernape (training one on X [thanks to Behind for the HA one]), Delphox, Greninja (w/Protean).

Though I don't use them as frequently, I have Samurott on this list since he can go mixed if needed [even though 70 speed is relatively slow], though Emboar is nice too (but 3 Fire/Fighting starters is pushing it). I like Typhlosion as well, though (just don't use him as often b/c Blaziken and the other Fire starters have more to offer IMO).

Still would like to test out a HA Chesnaught (seeing as I already have Magician Delphox [though Blaze probably works better over a free Thief] and Protean Greninja [I have half a box full of Protean Froakies, most of them are Japanese]). For the stuff I didn't list, I have my reasons for not using them [already mentioned why I'm not using Snivy].

(Still need to evolve Prinplup and Marshtomp in X; and probably evolve Snivy for dex purposes).

On an in-game note, had fun sweeping a Veteran's legendaries with my own in Institute (though my Latios got killed by her Regigigas under Slow Start [Payback + Air Slash off of a Moltres on same turn], but he did take a heavy chunk out of its HP before going). For team (mine), Latios, Heatran, Raikou and Virizion (I'll post their movesets if interested). Opponent had Moltres, Regigigas, Articuno and Cobalion.

I happen to love typlosion, if only thunder punch had stayed a special move though...

on another note R9LG-WWWW-WWW6-D8AY is one of the most hilarious battles I've had in a while. I played it so badly, but Dat Metagross!

Ooh, are we talking about starter hate?

I hate all the Gen 4 starters. HATE them. Turtwig looks hideous (Torterra looks kind of cool, admittedly), and it doesn't really hit very hard early game, making it rapidly outclassed due to my tendency for offensive strategy in-game. Chimchar looks meh, but Infernape is awesome. Piplup...it just feels underwhelming, and I rapidly replace it for Buizel. Empoleon looks cool, but I've never really cared to use it. Prinplup is ugly.

Gen 3 are probably my next unfavorites. Treecko is cool, but Sceptile less so, in my eyes. Torchic is meh, but Blaziken is extremely powerful. Love Mudkip and its evos, in no way related to the memes, but just because Marshtomp was my only hope in beating Wattson.

Gen 5...I love Snivy and its evos, and I like Dewott and Samurott to some degree. Tepig is meh.

Gen 6...I love the fact they finally dual-typed them in interesting ways, but I prefer the Fennekin and Froakie lines to the Chespin line, especially since the Chespin evos strike me as awkward looking or ugly.

I like all the Gen 1 starters, Charmander being my favorite, natch, but I tend to not use Bulbasaur.

Gen 2...love Cyndaquil and Totodile, neutral to Chikorita.

So...in summary, I seem to dislike all the Grass starters except Snivy. I love most of the Water starters except Piplup. I like most of the Fire starters except Tepig.

I find it funny that your bottom two are my top two. I think part of it is my only really caring for the final evos. I get the early ones should look nice a cute, but when you spend all your time with the final form, I just feel the first ones drop off in importance.

That's true. I tend to look at starters primarily in design and aesthetics first, and if a Pokemon just can't carry its own weight compared to alternatives, they lose value to me. Most of the grass starters are either superfluous or outclassed early-to-mid game, whereas the Fire Starters are almost always amazing for the whole game, depending on the prevalence of Fire options.

But...but...Empoleon? He's so cool! (as you may have guessed from my picture)

I don't hate any of the starters, though the Gen 5 ones aren't exactly impressive (since all of them aren't getting past RU in Smogon battles). Samurott/Emboar have some utility; Serperior has no real one until it gets Contrary (then we can start spamming Leaf Storm and other moves).

Empoleon has a nice niche in that SubPetaya set (if people still use it now in Gen 6), but that's about it. 111 sp atk is nice, but 60 spd really slows it down. Torterra is extremely slow at 56 (yeah, it's a tortoise so that's expected) and it has that 4x weakness to Ice Beam.

Infernape is cool, but has his share of frailties. I still need to train the one I asked Behind to breed a while back.

Empoleon is an AMAZING wall. Really solid defense stats, Water/Steel being a good defensive type, and access to both SR and Defog. Not being able to recover is an issue, but that hasn't been enough to keep it from being unusable in OU. Even now, its fringe playable in the the tier.

So the next tournament in XY is an inverse tournament.

...so what's the meta with that in mind?

I'm just waiting for the next game to introduce the move "Float" or "Bouy" as a recovery move.

Smogon has been playing around with the inverse battles. I'd look there if you want info. Its kind of brain melty since it goes against everything you've traded you brain for.

Water types getting an actual recovery move would be scary as hell since they are already some of the better defensive pokemon.

Probably Fighting, Grass, Steel, and Bug types will be very prevalent due to type advantages though. Something like Mega Lucario, Volcarona, Scizor, and Mega Venusaur are some that come in mind. Serebii does have an exact matchup list of Inverse battles.

Mamoswine looks absolutely amazing as a defensive typing as well.

Resists Fighting, Steel, Fire, Water & Grass.
Weak against only Electric and Poison, the latter which kinda sucks offensively.

Legendary teams seem to be a lot easier than regular teams. My yanmega almost solo swept an entire legendary team on it's own, and my jolteon wrecks mega mewtwos on a regular basis. it's probably because the people who use legendaries think they're invincible, so they don't bother properly raising them.
