Medivh
So yeah this is really the first fanfiction I've ever been serious about. Please critique, and enjoy. Yu-Gi-Oh! Turning of Spirits
Prologue Opening Post

《Prologue》 “For what reason have you called me here today, director?” The vice chancellor asked, stepping into the room as the automatic doors closed behind him with a soft swish. “You have heard the reports of critically injured duelists, correct?” The director replied, not turning from the large, blue monitor that comprised the northern wall of the room. The vice chancellor nodded. “Yes,” he said, and was bit surprised; The numerous wounded duelists were somewhat of a cold case by now. Injuries were still occurring, of course, but the Public Maintenance Security Bureau had elected to put their resources elsewhere after making no progress on the case. “We believe we've found the source of those injuries,” the director continued, looking over his shoulder at him. Bright green eyes which seemed to glow faintly in the darkness pierced the vice chancellor, looking right through him. He repressed a small shudder as the director continued. “If you would direct your attention to the card on table,” he suggested. The vice chancellor complied, turning his vision to the table, and to the Duel Monsters card that rested upon it. It was contained in a small, plastic case, though the vice chancellor suspected the case was comprised of a material much stronger than simple plastic. As he looked at it, something seemed to tug at the corner of his mind. The feeling got stronger the longer the official stared at the small card, until he could discern faint voices. “I would advise you not to look directly at the card for too long,” the director said. “The card has been known to, ah, suggest things to those who pay it too much mind.” The vice chancellor immediately snapped his gaze from the card to the back of the director’s head. “How is this related to the injuries?” He inquired, still somewhat shaken by the effect the card had on him. “While that card is on the field during a Duel, the SolidVision Holograms become...real.” His superior answered. “Real?” “As in, any damage done to either player results in real injuries. In addition, the controller of the card appears to have elevated skills, becoming much more calculating and conservative of his or her resources,” The director continued. “We’re not certain if this is a result of the card’s ‘whisperings,’ but that appears to be the case.” “How much better do they become?” The vice chancellor responded, fighting to stop his gaze from shifting to the card once more. “We had to send our top agent in the field to secure the card,” the director said, clenching his fist slightly. “And what became of the agent?” “She is hospitalized.” The vice chancellor’s eyes widened in surprise. Not only had Myla Ayal won the Duel Monsters World Championship the past three years, her reputation alone was enough to keep crime rates in most areas of the city low. Even certain sections of Satellite knelt before her after a series of raids into the island slum a few months ago. If a mere card could increase a common thug’s skill to this level... “I thought only Security Disks could make SolidVision images real!” The vice chancellor half-shouted, perspiration beginning to form on his brow. “How did KaibaCorp get permission to make a card like this?” As his second-in-command posed this question, the director’s features contorted in frustration. “KaibaCorp didn't make the card.” The vice chancellor stumbled back slightly at this. “KaibaCorp didn't make the card?” He said, voice shaking. “Then who did?” “We don’t know. No point of origin comes up when we scan it.” “H-how is that possible?” “You've not heard the worst of it yet, I’m afraid. The incidents have continued even after the card was recovered.” “You mean there are more of them?” “I advise you to risk a closer look at the card,” the director requested. The vice chancellor, once again, compiled, allowing himself to return his gaze to the card. It felt like a relief to do so, as though the card had been urging him to study it in greater detail ever since he first lay eyes on it. “Number 52: Diamond Crab King,” he mouthed. The effect certainly looked powerful - If it really could inflict actual damage, as well as making its wielder a better duelist, this card was indeed a very real threat. Whispers in the corner of the vice chancellor’s mind began as he held his gaze, growing louder and more distinct as he continued to stare at it. Release me, they said, the voice fading into indistinct mutterings, distinguishable words standing out from the haze every so often. We could become strong together. You could become the ruler of this city. You could become ruler of this country. You could become ruler of many worlds. All you have to do is slip me into your deck. “...Furthermore, we have no idea how many more of these th- Vice Chancellor, are you listening?” The director’s voice spiked through the whisperings, bringing back the vice chancellor to reality. His entire world had momentarily become the card and what it would say; He had not even noticed that the director was talking, nor that he was sweating profusely. The official took a handkerchief out of his coat pocket and wiped his forehead. “My apologizes, director. The card...” The director nodded sympathetically. “It does certainly seem to be sapient. We've received reports that it preys on a potential host’s ambitions. That’s enough for today, vice chancellor. You are dismissed.” The vice chancellor blinked rapidly, then nodded, walking out of the room. Were those really what my ultimate goals are? He asked himself as the doors closed behind him.
