F-Zero series

A futuristic racing series made by Nintendo where machines on average break the sound barrier, and they're said to be able to go up to 2.5 Mach Speed.  If you also know about the F-Zero Universe, then you'd know that there are two different universes:  The game universe (Original, X, GX, Maximum Velocity) and the anime universe (GP Legends, Climax).

One thing that has to be noted about the games is that they are VERY challenging, up to Eleven in GX.

While F-Zero started everything, F-Zero X made the biggest leap in contributions to the series by adding 26 more characters, more modes and 60 fps racing on the N64 (That's an achievement in itself).  GX furthered this by adding 11 more characters to that list, adding a story mode and changing the physics engine for a broader focus on speed.  It was also the first F-Zero game to be developed by a 3rd party developer (Sega, more specifically the now-dead Amusement Vision [makers of the first 2 Super Monkey Ball games, which are ridiculously fun, but also considered Nintendo Hard]).

The thing that makes the series notable is the fact that you race against 29 other racers at sonic speeds.  In addition, if your vehicle gets wrecked or falls off track, you lose a life and have to start the race over.  If you run out of lives, then it is game over.

I played X and GX, and while I love them both, I prefer GX more due to its track design, music, and of course, challenge.  Of course, the series was dormant for a decade and Nintendo announced that they have "no way to innovate on the series", which I call bull on.  Just take GX, add more characters + tracks, put it in HD, give each of them more interaction with each other in the story and have 30-player online multiplayer.  There you go:  NEW F-ZERO SEQUEL!  Discuss.

I really hope that the series isn't shelved.  GX left for so much potential for future games.  I would LOVE to see more of the AX characters, especially Phoenix considering that he has a bit of a mysterious backstory that is just asking to be explored.
