ポケモン—Red
THE POKEMON REVIEW COLLECTION by Amazing Mayonaise
Introduction Pokemon Red, Blue and Green are the first three games in the Pokemon Series. Released in 1996 in Japan, '97 in the US and '98 everywhere else. Pokemon received widespread critical acclaim and is one of (if not THE) best GB games out there. But enough chit-chat, lets get this review done. Plot You are greeted into the Game by Prof. Oak, the leading authority on Pokemon Studies, he lets you name yourself and remind him of his grandson's name (Red for me, Green for Rival, or Asshat, I use the names interchangeably). Once all that stuff is done, the game begins. You start in Pallet Town, which is where you live. You start in your bedroom, walk out and start your journey by heading north into tall grass, but before you can even leave the town, Prof. Oak stops you, takes you back to his lab and lets you pick on of three Pokemon, Bulbasaur, Charmandr or Squirtle. Your Asshat rival always picks the one that is supereffective against yours. So after seeing which Pokemon can Tackle the hardest, you are allowed to leave. Story now goes like this. Town, Problem in Town, Problem Solved, Beat gym, Head to next town You also encounter Team Rocket, Team Rocket want all the Pokemon in the world for... uh... something, dunno. So eventually you have beaten all 8 Gym Leaders and you head back to Viridian and go to the Indigo Plateau to face THE POKEMON LEAGUE. So you go through an annoying Ice Whore, Mr Piss-Easy-With-Kadabra, Bitch with a Gengar and a wanker with Dragons, you face the ultimate Trainer. Your Asshat rival. CONGLATURATION, YOU BEET GAEM! Credits roll and Mewtwo's cave becomes open to you, which doesn't add anything to the story. If you get all 150 Pokemon that can be caught legitimately you get a diploma, a little peice of paper that is merely for bragging rights. Gameplay You move your character around with the D-Pad, and interact with people, signs and objects with the A button, and the B button to cancel, decline or exit. In battle, you have up to 6 Pokemon you can catch and battle with, you can FIGHT, RUN (Wild battles only) switch POKEMON or use an ITEM. Moves can raise or hinder stats like Attack, Defense, Speed and Special. Most often, Battles will last quickly, depending on the type matchups. Like Grass > Water, Fire > Grass and Water > Fire and so on. I would go into how damage is calculated but, I have no time for that. Soundtrack Go on Youtube and listen to it, 'nuff said. Graphics The graphics are fairly basic, but the monster sprites in Red and Blue are upgraded from JP Red and Greens roadkill Venusaurs and tiny eyed Gengars but I digress. The monsters look... monsterish. I don't know about you but all the monsters are very well drawn in Red and Blue. Green's sprites are just amazingly bad, so whatever. The overworld map looks charming but alot of the same is everywhere, but that is to be expected of a Game boy game, VERDICT A good start to the series and set the bar high for future installments, 8/10
