Anonymous
"So what is that "Danganronpa"?" Danganronpa is a "high-speed mystery visual novel" originally released for PSP and later re-released (with 2nd game) for PS Vita. In short it tells a story of average student Makoto Naegi gets enrolled with another 15 students into Hope's Academy for "Super High School" students that are prodigies in their respective fields (he got there by lottery so he got the title of "(Un?)Luckster"). Soon after they enter the building they are knocked out and later they find out that the only way to "graduate" is to kill other student without getting caught! (expect a lot of death ;) ) If I would have to compare it to anything I would compare it to Phoenix Wright games with more action (and different gameplay of course) . "Ok, cool, where can I play it?" We have few options here: 1. If you own PSP or PS Vita and you know Japanese well enough you can just buy it. 2. If you own PS Vita next year there will be official western release of the game made by NIS America. 3. Last option is to use (god damn) well made fantransation of the game made by Project Zetsubou and play the game on the PSP emulator or PSP with custom firmware (which is not hard to do).
- After finishing the game you have access to the present machine in "Extras" menu. -There is a secret scene at the beginning of Chapter 3 if before the end of Chapter 2 you had present #91 "Spirit of Adventure" -Present #92 "Escape Button" can only be acquired from the machine after finishing the game and unlocks last movie in "Extras" -There is no point in giving the machine more than 1 coin at a time (no matter the chances) -Getting presents and giving them to (proper) characters allows you to uncover some of their story and let's you acquire more or less useful abilities. - When during (later part of) the game you will the option to: "Point out lie", "Don't catch on lie" and "Run away" choose 1st the "Point out lie".
"I played the game and it was awesome. What now?" 1st you should read the Danganronpa manga, that shows some stuff not shown in the game. 2nd you should read Danganronpa IF, that tells an alternative story. "Cool! Is there more?" Well, here come the stairs. If you know Japanese (mostly) will not have a problem. First you should read Danganronpa/Zero (light novel), that shows happenings before the game, and gives (for what I know) background for the 2nd game "Super Danganronpa 2". Problem is neither of them were released to English yet. Project Zetsubou is currently working on Danganronpa/Zero, but we don't know when they will finish. KnightBuster
Having finished the second game myself? You really need to play both games to get the entire story. That being said, I haven't read Zero yet, so that might be next on my hit list.
Dad
I only just came across the anime of this. It's very good and I'm intrigued to play the game.
mitchermitcher
The game is much better than the anime adaption, imo. Get to it if you can. Having finished the second game myself? Curiously, how hard is the language in the second game? How much Japanese does one need to know to understand the game mostly?

The game isn't too terrible (mostly because the trial parts are voiced, so they're a bit easier for me) but like any visual novel kind of game, especially a mystery one like these? You might have a tough time picking up dialogue hints and clues. If you'd like, there's a LP/translation on Something Awful's forums for the game (I believe he's on case 2/3), and there's also kuzuhiko's tumblr, who also does liveplay/translation of the game (she's on case 4's trial I think).
