Okay.

This movie

was just awesome.

If any of you has ever wanted to know how a mecha anime would translate into Hollywood that isn't Transformers, this is your answer.

The visual effects were astounding. The Jaegers, the Kaiju, the action and destruction throughout were all so awesomely rendered.

I think the main drawback in this movie is that it sacrificed some character/plot expansion in favor of beefing up their action sequences, but I think it was worth the trade-off. You still get a basic gist and feel for the cast and the story being told, which is enough considering everyone watching this will be watching this for the awesome mecha action. And it absolutely delivers in that area.

Anybody see this yet? What'd you think?

I agree it looked amazing but it wasn't the greatest movie because of all the logical flaws.  Instead or ripping out a kaijuu acid sac they could have cut the head in two and be done with it.

Alright, excuse me while I throw you into battle, let's see how quick you're thinking when a gaping mouth is thrown at you. Come on dude, battle tactics are not "logical flaws". Besides, other Kaiju didn't necessarily die from what should have been fatal hits.

Besides, they had an actual strategy when fighting. Asses threat, removing it. SUch as the EMP Kaiju. What did they attack first? The organ that emitted the EMP burst. SO naturally, when a Kaiju shoots acid then constantly has it's mouth open, logic would dictate removal of the acid gland to stop further assault from it.

I want to see this movie soo bad! but I also want to confirm something, was there really a Godzilla trailer in this movie? because there was a 2014 Godzilla trailer being teased on the official website and the general opinion was that if it was gonna be placed anywhere, it would be in this movie.

Not that we saw. We saw Gravity, Wolverine, and Seventh Son.

PUNCH IT IN THE FACE

ELBOW ROCKET

Sword? SWORD!

IT has wings?!

You funning me?

Lots of Heart pumping action.

Characters are simplistic, still plenty effective.

Only real logic flaw I noticed was during the Scientist subplot: Marshal makes it a priority, but doesnt monitor the developments or have the doctor report in? Especially towards the end where the two of them rush back to command by helicopter but dont just radio it in? Doctor doesnt even have a cell phone?

You can excuse yourself because I'm not a trained soldier that should be smart enough to know how to kill an enemy.  Remember the Kaijuu are the only enemies the Jaeger are meant to defeat.  Yes the organ was priority but don't tell me that there was times where the EMP monster tackled the Gypsy and instead of stabbing the face they punched it.  The battle tactics were also very flawed.  Why not post jaegers around the portal and constantly fire while the Kaijuu are immobile as they are coming through?  What I used above was merely an example.  i apologize for not presenting an argument that cannot repel the rabid fanboys.

I'm not trained either, I LARP. Also, Jaegers run on fuel, having full-time guard surveillance in the zero-visiblity water (they commented on that) would just waste resources. Also, were they using the sword weapon when the EMP beast tackled them? No. By the time they could have got i properly deployed he would have shredded it, hence resorting to punching.

Saw this movie last night. It was GREAT. There were some inconsistencies, though. Like how they said "A Kaiju skull is too thick to pierce without constant drilling." *Several swords through the top of the skull*. But this was the first movie in quite awhile where I was actually getting really into it. I really enjoyed it.

Saw the movie on Sunday and next thing I know I'm walking around the house like a Jaeger while blasting the movie's theme on repeat.

I really like how original the movie is.  Yes, the director paid homage to classic mecha anime/kaiju films, but he put his own twist on it and made it all fit into its own unique universe.

Never been in a fight before, have you?

Loved this movie.  It was honestly beautiful to watch, and was just an entertaining movie that could truly be described as epic.

Posting multiple Jaegers around the portal is a waste of already limited resources, and endangers the lives of multiple pilots in the process.  Ammunition for jaegers is limited, and fighting in zero-visibility water at that extreme depth is risky.

The Gipsy would've used the chainsword against Leatherback (Kaiju with EMP), but the first few seconds of activating the sword are when it's most vulnerable to breaking.  Leatherback was not only massive, but relentless, and would've snapped the chainsword when it was vulnerable; this is why the Gipsy Danger stuck to fists.

Those drills are not as powerful as a Jaeger's force behind a sword.

I'm a little too hooked on the movie.  I watched it again last night in 3-D, and it was better the second time around, in my opinion.

So glad I'm not teh only one who understands their combat logic.

Saw the movie. Seemed oddly paced, imo. Was let down that all the fights happened at night/rain/dark, but I suppose it was to help cover up CGI. Why did there have to be romance? Like, there is no need for that as it doesn't do anything. Can't a guy and a girl be protagonist and not get involved? Other inconsistencies did ruin certain parts, as others have said.

All that being said, movie did live up to the hype. Will be something I go see again and will by when it comes out on disk. Epic robots fights remind me of Megus XLR. Now we need a sequel with Coop.

Actually I'm a trained martial artist?  i'm saying there are scenes where the Gypsy danger has time to pick up a ship and bat the Kaiju away.  Surely that time he can deploy a sword and look to finish him?

*Gipsy*

I'm assuming you're still talking about Mr. EMP Kaiju.

Leatherback is a particularly interesting case for a Kaiju.  He is considerably large for a Category IV, and lumbers around like a gorilla, yet possesses deceptively fast running speed.  It's built for brawling.  There is no time to safely deploy the sword because you have to anticipate the moves of a beast that can take the hits and return them just as hard.

Gipsy had to be efficient in its engages; that's why it used the Plasmacaster and not the sword after Leatherback grappled them - it allowed for more attacks in a shorter span of time, and could melt through the incredibly durable armored skin of that particular Kaiju.

Wait wait WAIT, you're a trained martial artist, and didn't know to prioritize the removal of weapons? Wow, must not be very trained very well.

That's what Not-romance looks like. According to this or that interview, they did a cut where the two kiss in the end but del Toro said it was too awkward.

There's a difference between a trained martial artist and a giant sea monster from a different dimension.  If they knew how to disarm weapons then shouldn't they kaijuu know akido and snap the jaeger's limbs?  If I was fighting an untrained opponent I would brawl up close yes, but I would push them away create space then draw a knife forsay and go in for a strike.

Okay, go teach your dog Akido (which is a defensive art anyway) and see how well it turns out. The Kaiju are BEASTS with organic weapons.

Overthinking it entirely guys.

My only gripe with the film was that a few characters were criminally underdeveloped, especially the ones that were killed off.

But yeah, you can't say, "They should have just done this."  It's fiction.  You can't just decide what would have happened if something had been done like this or that.
