I really, REALLY don't like this show. I personally believe it's rather uncreative, and it's even less realistic in terms of crime fighting and forensics than shows like CSI. The characters are bland cardboard cutouts(except maybe the computer girl, can't remember her name atm), which I think is my biggest complaint.

Well we are going to have to agree to disagree here, because there is no way I will give up any ground here. Criminal Minds is by far my favorite show on TV. I am not too sure on the forensics and crime fighting accuracy there, but comparing it to CSI is a big no-no, in my opinion it is much more accurate than that dumb ass show. As for the characters being cardboard cut outs, I don't really see it there either.

 

We'll start with Penelope Garcia(the computer girl, as you call her): She has the most vibrant personality, and the most attention grabbing. She is instantly likeable by nearly every viewer, because she is so damn relatable. Despite the fact that we don't have as much backstory or depth on her as the other characters, it obvious by your post that even those that dislike the show are at the very least, interested by her character. She, I think, is meant to be the attention grabber, the thing about the show that draws you in right away, so that the other features of the show can take a hold on you. 

 

Doctor Spencer Reid: Probably the second most loved character of the main cast, Spencer is the epitome of awkwardness that the younger generation can relate to. His aptitude for problem solving, mathematics, and everything else intellect based is his pitfall in terms of social life. This is something that I in particular relate to, being fairly intelligent myself, but having a bit of a rough time in the social aspects of life. His school boyish personality bring something to the team that isn't brought by any of the others. Innocence. They have managed to bring innocence to a character that has gone through some of the toughest times in the show. Suffering from a drug addiction as well as losing the only girl that he could ever call his girlfriend to a serial killer, it is obvious that there is pain beneath the eyes of the beloved Doctor Reid. Looking back at his early life, we see that Reid never had it easy. Teased and belittled because of his physique and intelligence, he is the classic nerd. A staple for any group-based television shows. We could further depth in his character by discovering that his mother suffers from dimensia, and it was Reid himself that decided to said her to a psychiatric ward, the hardest choice of his life. The skeleton for this character may be fairly generic, but has unique characteristics that sets him far above any cardboard cut out character.

 

Aaron Hotchner(or Hotch): The stoic leader. We almost never see emotion from Hotch, unless he is working on a particular disturbing or intense case. He is the leader that every team needs, but so rarely gets. He is willing to fight and lie for his 'family'(AKA the BAU), standing up to his superiors more than once in order to save another member of the team, often putting his own ass on the line. At first glance, Hotch is seen as emotionless and a boring character, but once you get a look into his homelife, you realize that not all is well for the brave soldier. Captivated by his work, Hotch's marriage is sailing through some rough waters. It eventually becomes too much, and he loses his family. It was not from the lack of love that the divorce was put into play, but because of the lack of time. It was because of Hotch's time consuming job that he was forced to part with his wife and son. This inflicts a pain so great on him that it can only be outdone by what we see later in the series. Still separated, Hotch and his ex-wife seem to be maybe getting along better. Could this spell a reuniting of the lovers? Before we can find out, tragedy strikes. Hotch loses his wife to the serial killer known as The Reaper. Leaving him alone with his son, Jack, Hotch is now a single father. Skipping a few seasons, we find Hotch ready to date again. Finding a girlfriend, it seems that life might be taking on a new light for him. Only future seasons will reveal if this too good to be true.

 

This is just three of the main characters found in the show. I can tell by your post, that you just haven't given things enough time. How much of the show have you actually watched? More than likely, not enough. If you make a thread bashing a show, it probably means you haven't given it enough time to let it sink in.

No, trust me, I have seen a LOT of it. My mother watches it EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. I have seen at least 40-ish episodes, and I think that's enough to judge it. I've seen how the characters operate, and their personalities. I actually know a lot of the backstories, and I still decide to dislike this show, because what I've seen does not make for a good series.

Well, I would like to tell my honest opinion. I dont like crime series. But this show is just amazing.

 

Anyway, I would like to point out that some of the facts about what Renegade said about Reid is wrong.

Maeve didn't die by a Serial Killer since it was only one victim before Maeve was killed. And that was Maeves ex-fiancee and the current boyfriend of Maeves killer. So that isn't actually a serial killer. And she died by the same bullet as Maeve. And Reids mom has Schizofrenia, and possibly Dementia but they never tell, if I'm not mistaken.

 

Also, I think that Reid is the most attention grabbing character, but that might just be me.

 

The character I like the least is Prentiss and Garcia. When we get to computer nerds, I like Hardison from Leverage much more likeable.

Did I not state that his mother had dementia? But I can agree on the fact that it hasn't exactly been confirmed what mental illness she has. I was also just attempting to generalize Reid's life, for I was getting lazy, so some things may be slightly incorrect, but they are more or less get the same idea across. I can understand the dislike of Prentiss, she never really was a favorite of mine, but she is gone(at least for now). My favorite character is JJ. 1) because I think she is stunningly beautiful 2) I find that she has the most down to earth character, coming from a more-or-less normal back story

Well, what I said wasn't mean as a mean thing, just wanted to help out with the facts a little, cause I am a person that must correct a wrong somewhere if I see one. Didn't mean you didn't know what I was saying in the first place. Apologies if what I said sounded like I was mean and rude. That was not my intention. When I started wathing this show, I was kinda hoping for a Reid/JJ relationship tbh. Then along came Will and ruined it. In seson 8 episode 4, I was hoping Reid would meet with Maeve someday. Then in episode 10, they were planing to, but it didn't happen cause of her stalker and her ex-fiancee. Then in the episode Zugzwang, Maeve was kiddnaped and killed, which was the breaking point for me (still love the show). Hate that they killed her. She would have been a great addition to the story if she was alive.

 

Well, JJ is also one of my favorite, after Reid and Rossi. JJ is probably the one in the team that are closest to Reid out of those people. I mean, Reid is Henrys Godfather, which is a sign on how close they are. So are Penelope too, but JJ and Reid are closer to eachother.

 

Think that they could have replaced Prentiss sooner with Alex Blake. Love that the BAU won't split up for the 9th season. Dont know exactly if Blake will be there but I hope so. Now, the team is perfect (except that I wanted them to replace Garcia with another tech specialist).

Nah, I didn't think you were being rude, I apologize for you thinking that I thought that. At first I didn't like Alex Blake, but I am learning to like her. She seems to be getting closer to Reid as well. I agree, bringing in a love interest for Spencer, namely Maeve, would have been great and I was disappointed when they killed her off, something I feel like didn't have to happen. And they will never replace Garcia!

Well, now that the whole thing has been cleard, I would like to say that when I heard Reid was finally going to meet Maeve, I was really happy, then I read the summary for the episode after and thought that it was a bad omen. Then I watched Zugzwang and after I watched it, I acyually cried. Still do everytime I watch it. Just so sad.

 

To the Alex Blake part, I didn't like her to at first, but after third I started to like her more and more, though I still think Reid will be closest to JJ and Morgan through the series. Alex can never take their places. I mean, they are like borther and sister to him.

 

Garcia part, I dont like Garcia as much as I like the rest. But she will still be there during season 9. I dont particularly hate her, but sometimes she annoys the hell out of me. Cant stand her sometimes. I gotta admit that her character is one-of-a-kind unique.

 

Here are a list of the best to least best characters in Criminal Minds according to me:

Well, didn't like Gideon and Prentiss. Dont know why I didn't like them, just didn't.
