Here's an interesting article with Sakurai covering his choices for the last 3 DLC characters in-depth.

It's funny how Sakurai was very hesitant to add Corrin initially because even he believed Fire Emblem had too many representatives, but the rest of the staff convinced him to put Corrin in.

Bayonetta's inclusion also poses a bit of a threat to Sm4sh's CERO rating, but he included her because she was among the top representatives in the poll and Bayonetta 2 was published by Nintendo.

I think Splatoon was the lowest hanging fruit for "popular new release" but I'm not sure just how popular the series is in Japan.

Splatoon has top tier-level popularity in Japan.  But, I think I should probably put out the list of possible characters that could have fit the recent release criteria in terms of likeliness other than Corrin.  For this list, I excluded remakes since they would not fit into the criteria and I excluded games that do not show off any characters that fit Sakurai's other criterias:

-Inkling (Splatoon)

-Xenoblade Chronicles X character

-Jinbanyan (Yo-Kai Watch)

-Star Fox character

-Ivan (Devil's Third)

Out of these characters, the only ones who seemed like Sakurai would have wanted to add (besides Corrin) are Inkling, a Xenoblade Chronicles X character or Jinbanyan (There aren't really any characters to add from Star Fox Zero yet, so I'm excluding that from the list and a Devil's Third representative would risk bringing the CERO rating even higher).  Considering that adding in Inkling or Jinbanyan would have meant adding in an entire new series with a very limited slots for additional trophies, stages and songs, it would have been impossible to fully flesh out their inclusions, so the only other probable character Sakurai could have added was a character from Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Thing is though, with Bayonetta being in Smash, her inclusion may pose a threat to the game's rating, which is something I had been thinking about since the direct.

At most, it would be a T rating instead of an E10+ rating.  Previous Smash titles also had T Ratings as well.

Will be responding with PEGI ratings, hah!

Huh, over here older copies of Melee had a PEGI rating of 3+ (later increased to 11+) whereas Brawl and Smash 4 have PEGI ratings of 12. (Which means, Smash 4 may end up with a PEGI rating of 16 when Bayonetta releases)

nah, her game might be for teen/mature players, but nothing about her in smash seems all that explicit.

Inkling is a lock for the next Smash game. The franchise is massive, they can do something really cool with the move set, and the games always rep recent games. I am curious what new franchises might make it into Smash 5 outside of the Inklings though.

That being said, Smash 5 won't be for a long while, 2020 or later is my guess. Sakurai very much needs a break and he is likely to work on another game before he'd even think about going to another smash game. They could have someone else do it, but imo it would feel weird to not have a Sakurai headed smash game.

I think Sakurai is actually done with the series as a whole.

Dude wanted to stop after Melee.  The only reason Brawl even happened was because of Iwata.  Now I think Sakurai finally was able to create something he can solidly put everything to rest over.  I think if there is a so called "Smash 5" iteration, it won't be anything from Sakurai.  He's repeatedly stated that working on the smash games makes him feel like he's taking years off his life.

And I totally get this argument. The question of "how do you top this" is a big one and I don't think Sakurai would attempt to unless he thought he could. That being said Smash is too big to not keep making them. I don't think I've ever seen a franchise create this many hype waves ever and I think Nintendo will want to keep putting them out at like once a gen. The question is will Sakurai come back because Smash is one of is babies and I'm not sure how HE'LL feel if someone else was heading it.

It ain't smash without sakurai

Agreed.
