According to TV Tropes, Cloud Strife is the biggest base breaker in the game.

Cloud stands as one of, if not the, most controversial third party characters to ever be playable in the series, even more than Snake. Some are glad that Final Fantasy, one of the most famous Eastern RPGs in the world, is represented in Smash; along with this, Cloud is one of the most popular characters in all of gaming, and many fans are excited to play as him and pit him against Nintendo's greatest. However, others resent the inclusion of a character with even more tenuous ties to Nintendo than Snake; while Final Fantasy got its start on Nintendo consoles, the series hasn't had any major installments on a Nintendo console since Final Fantasy VI. Cloud's only appearances on Nintendo consoles were in some Kingdom Hearts games as a very minor character and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, a Widget Series spin-off. Some even find Cloud's addition to be insulting, because instead of a character from one of the Final Fantasy games that were on Nintendo consoles, Smash gets a character from Final Fantasy VII, the game that marked the point where Final Fantasy became more associated with Sony than Nintendo. It also doesn't help that Final Fantasy VII suffers from a strong case of Hype Backlash which extends to Cloud himself, with some people believing that Cloud's inclusion in Smash only makes the game even more overrated. Prior to Cloud's inclusion, many people believed that the most likely Final Fantasy character would be a generic class or creature, such as a Black Mage or Moogle, due to their previous crossover appearances in Mario sports games; there are fans who think that Cloud is a much better and cooler choice, and there are also fans who believe that a generic class/creature would have better represented the "Nintendo era" of Final Fantasy.

Now that we have that sorted out of the way, now I shall be interested in trying out Cloud and the Midgar stage.

I think a generic FF character would've been really lame, even if it was more linked with Nintendo. And I can't really say that any of the protagonists from I-VI would make as good an addition as Cloud. Like, maybe Cecil? I dunno.

Regardless, the explanation on TV Tropes perfectly explains why there are people who are confused or even uncomfortable with Cloud's inclusion in Smash.

at this point, it's not like nintendo's going to stop adding new characters to smash, so i really don't see the point in people complaining about wasted spots, he may not be the one people want, but i can guarantee he won't be the last one in. *silently hopes for ragna*

It isn't about the thought that it is a 'wasted spot' at all.  There are people who are simply upset with Cloud because he's the personification of a middle finger to Nintendo when Sony released the Playstation.  Obviously, a character who represents a form of downfall for Nintendo is going to get backlash if he/she is represented in Smash Bros.

I really wanted them to use a Summon as his Final Smash, but it seems like he's getting a boosted form.

Final Smash is Omnislash. Limit Break is just part of his character.

MHe, basically 90% of SMash isn't torunament legal

that's one way to overgeneralize it

BUT, if it's anything like Pyrosphere, then stage hazards are removed with 5+ players (assuming 5+ can play on the stage).  Therefore if you really wanted to play the stage with no hazards you could just go in with 5 people and have 3 of them kill themselves to start the match

that's a logistical nightmare for actual tournaments though which is why no tournaments allow it.

In that case you might as well play Battlefield though. Only difference would be the music.

competitive melee has 4 legal stages that are "basically battlefield." There are minute but seriously important differences between them. It's the reason Little Mac prefers BF greatly to Miiverse.

And if this was any indication, why not include Blanc from Hyperdimension Neptunia?

Because it's a niche title that no one gives a sheet about?

I get that, but at this point, i could be considered water under the bridge in favor of good business. by adding him to smash as purchasable DLC, Nintendo will soon be reaping a profit off of something that was once a loss. they're taking an iconic character and making monetary gain off of him. it might have been a financial wound in the past, it'll be profit gain in the future. for that i applaud Nintendo, they're taking a middle finger, and making it spit money for them.

It might also be a liability in a long run, since this would attract more people to the FFVII remake being released on the PS4 and PC.  But, combined with what you said, it's going to end up being a double-edged sword.

It's not like Nintendo really competes with the other consoles that much anyways, it's usually Xbox vs PS.

That's true, but I really want to use the double-edged sword reference in there.

I appreciate you commitment to a joke.

Anyway, I stand by what I said earlier. Yes, Cloud is an odd choice given 7 being where Nintendo and FF parted ways and the fanboy love for FFVII is insane, but end of the day Cloud is one of the most popular characters in gaming and 7 one of the most well known games ever made. If a Final Fantasy character was going to get it, it was going to be Cloud, no question.

You know, I never thought about that, but it COULD happen. I'd imagine Nintendo would be FAR more interested in getting Banjo from MS though.

People were expecting the Nintendo rule to still hold. Cloud DOES change things a fair bit. As said, Mater Chief is now live (even if I think he is still very unlikely) when before I would say you're crazy to suggest that.

Master Chief still isn't live. He's a major character for an exclusive console series. Sakurai has stated that at the very least, 3rd party characters need to be from classic series from like WAYYYY back. That's why Sonic and Pac-Man are in even though one was a huge console rival for a decade and the other is not really known for his games on Nintendo consoles– and now Cloud.

If anything just went live, it's Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Lara Croft. And Vectorman. Never forget Vectorman.
