Not to mention this bozo thinks a secondary character from a shitty franchise is a better inclusion than the mascot of one of the most well known games ever made.

Duck hunt is well known? Sonic isn't a good franchise? Where are you getting your info from might I ask? I'd be happy to tell you all about how Sonic's debut game took a huge bite out of Nintendo's market share, but I doubt you'd listen.

From a marketing standpoint, anyone who didn't grow up with whatever ancient system duck hunt came out on, which is most of the target audience for this game I'm sure, wouldn't care about duck hunt if they even knew of the title at all:

Since then, Sonic has become one of the world's best-known video game characters, with his series having sold over 80 millions of copies as of 2011

Duck Hunt is a pretty well known character in all fairness. He just isn't all that popular. Sonic, as a franchise, hasn't been good in a LONG time.

And again, Sakurai LIKES putting old, throw back, characters into Smash. Its why we had Ice Climbers, Game&Watch, R.O.B., Pit, and so on. And you could VERY easily pull the "people wouldn't care if Tails didn't make it card" since again 3rd party slots are VERY limited and likely default to 1 per franchise and I don't imagine he is super popular.

Also, general note, I'm cool with these kinds of discussions, but please refrain from name calling.

I mean it's not like you're ignoring that Duck Hunt IS really well known or something.

Or that the Sonic franchise already has a representative in Sonic himself.

Or that you're acting like I'm being overly biased when it's clear that's exactly what you're doing. :\

I'm not buying this smash now...

You passed up an incredibly lulzy opportunity to mention Ridley instead of Tails.

Because 3rd party characters are INCREDIBLY limited Sonic isn't going to get 2. Honestly, not getting a smash game because a character you like didn't make it while a character you don't like did seems really silly. I HATE Jigs in Smash and would have really liked to see Sceptile and K.Rool is another character I would have loved to see, but in a cast of nearly 50 characters you should have multiple ones that you like.

Look, just be glad he isn't complaining about Snake.

As for Little Mac, he is actually really popular and a cool character from the old days of Nintendo, something Sakurai likes including. That also explains Duck Hunt, though he made it in because of the latter more so than the former.

Mac stems from the same nostalgia-based idea that ROB, Game & Watch, hell... Even Duck Hunt Dog come from.
Plus, it always an amusing idea to see some seemingly dead character from the past be given new life as a fighter in this game.
....
Also, because we don't really get a lot of range-based characters.

Well, the developer liking old characters explains a lot of the out of left field characters.

I'm sure we all hard characters we wished we could fight with in the new smash, I just never knew it was such a touchy subject to voice mine... ) :

"old days" "nostalgia-based" "seemingly dead character"

Uh... yeah, his best known game was on the NES but... what in the world are you guys talking about? O_o

The issue isn't so much that your unhappy a character you like didn't make it. Its more so that your like, "these stupid characters made it in, but the one I like didn't, not buying" doesn't look very good. Again, the cast has nearly 50 characters, odds are multiple characters in the game are ones you like, and if not you could find characters to come to like. Also, wanting a 3rd party franchise to get more than 1 rep is asking for a LOT. A base understanding with those 3rd party slots, for now at least, is that a franchise gets 1 per.

I know the Wii Punch-Out exists, but as you said the NES version is more so what got him in. Which is why I'm focusing on that. Also, that game is almost 6 years old now. Man, time flies.

I'd argue Captain Falcon is more of a retro choice than Little Mac :'D

I think Sonic is so amazing to have survived, and remained relevant, after almost a decade of meh games, with a few exceptions being handheld games, and Sonic generations.

Lost Worlds apparently was ok.

I miss Adventure 2 Battle tho.

...I'm still butthurt Ray 01 didn't make it in.

Custom Robo would have been cool to see get a rep.

I wouldn't call you crazy for making that argument. Of the original 12 Smash characters 9 are locked and would always be in a smash game regardless of when it was made. The 3 that aren't are Ness, Falcon, and Jigs. Of those Ness would likely get in on the back of Earthbound's cult status. Falcon is a bit more of a stretch imo, but I think F-Zero was popular enough to get a rep. Nothing you can say will convince me that if the first Smash Bros game was made today Jigs would even be in the running for inclusion.

Was loved. Show me that this is still the case today. And even if she is still popular I'm willing to bet several other pokemon are more popular.

But Captain Falcon conquered a large part of the internet...

Largely because of Smash Bros. I contend that if Smash 1 was coming out this year he would have a decent chance but wouldn't be a lock. IMO this should be how it is for all the characters.

As far as I know, falcon is now at least 10 times more famous for smash than his own series by now. it's somewhat sad when you think of if from the standpoint of his original franchise, but that's the best thing about this game, it builds interest in the characters included. I'm willing to bet that if captain falcon got a new game now, it would sell an extremely well simply due to his inclusion in smash.

So I've still been goofing around with Falcon some more...

I have a custom one with Shield Degenerator Boots, Hyper Suit, and Risky Respawner Gloves-

Guys, this Captain Falcon has +44 Attack, +52 Defense, and +35 Speed. He is a fucking monster.

(But that's custom. so who cares)

My CF Amiibo is insane. It has something like +50 Attack, -10 Defense and +20 Speed and it heals every few seconds. It also gets 10 seconds of invincibility if it gets the first hit of the match. It's crazy.

I spent a few hours trying to dig up anything concrete on that picture of Tails I posted earlier, and I found something interesting:

I was looking at downloadable content for smash 4 here, and found this page detailing updates:

http://www.ssbwiki.com/List_of_updates_%28SSB4-3DS%29

The 1.0.3 link linked me here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2kigpk/dantarions_datamining_of_100102103/

Then I found this link on the site that contributed data to the reddit post above (http://opensa.dantarion.com):

http://opensa.dantarion.com/s4/

The above link appears to be a list of all the files in SSB4 3ds, and guess what? Mewtwo's data isn't in there except as a trophy (note the directory structure that contains "mewtwo" doesn't contain "fighter" it contains "figure")

Tails doesn't show up anywhere that would make him an assist trophy or a playable character based on this analysis.

This most likely means that Nintendo can still update this game and add whoever and whatever they want in future patches, assuming they want to follow what they stated here about Mewtwo:

http://www.ssbwiki.com/Downloadable_content

This may all be old news, but I only just started researching this game in detail today

I'm almost certain that as long as Smash Bros. exists, Captain Falcon will exist in it. It perpetuates his existence now, even without F-Zero.

That Ganondorf vine was fucking amazing, you're right I would love it.

That trick with Mac's midair KO Punch is good, I'll have to remember that. I love a comment on that video, "Oh god, fuck me. Just what we need is more tech for Little Macs that know what they're doing."

EDIT: One comment said it's the same for all his B moves, does that mean if you buffer with an aerial his up B and side B will also get the same distance they would if they were used on the ground? I'm not at my Wii U to test.
