Men can be waifus too.

Generally the opposite is thought about as "husbando" or whatever

Neither of which comes with a long history of mainly depicting those male characters as love interests or with spouse being their only option like women have been depicted for centuries.

It's tame, but that doesn't mean it's not degrading.

But that's the anime industry being shit and uncreative.  Also, the past hundred years are irrelevant.

This is true. But it's really not the main point here.

Which is. What one group of people do with something shouldn't be a reason to get rid of it. (Exceptions exist of course.)

I mean, might as well get rid of all television and many other games as well if this were the case. And anime for sure....... *Looks to the left of my post and chuckles a bit*

...I feel weird continuing this without Armz replying in his defense.

Also this is slipping into a status/General discussion.

It's not irrelevant if the depiction is not only still around but common even in american media, not to mention any lit or media studies major could tell you how much the past influences current depictions.

I agreed that we shouldn't be getting rid of female characters. That's like the opposite of what should really happen. More female characters in more unique roles with more complex characterizations. That's what I want to see.

Fans are free to do what they want. I just find the idea of reducing a female character to your "waifu" degrading and wouldn't condone it

Been using Lemmy a lot more recently online. His cannonballs easily mess people up, but you typically have to jump through hoops to do it. I mean, it's easy with Lemmy, but still...

Armz feels this way because people who specifically only plays the game for their waifus (not going to use that end term) are among the worst players to face online.

Only once in a blue moon do I find someone who tryhards with Zero Suit. It's fine, because they actually want to play Sm4sh. Though, they earn stupid points because they use one of her skimpier outfits.
Yet, on the other hand, I constantly find Lucinas, female Robins, and occasionally Peach who literally cannot fight at all. Bonus points if they are Lucina, because they typically just do B+Down the whole time and telegraph it like they want to die.

Would like to make sure it's understood that I agree with this. Despite what it may seem. It's not serious, but I'm sure you know this. (Though this stuff I've done has gotten me much more interested in the show and the character herself so take that as you will.)

So. Basically. I don't understand Armz's reasons because the characters themselves aren't the problem.

Also I will reiterate that it's really fun to play as Peach.

The problem is that you're projecting a certain idea onto anyone using that trope.  The assumption that anyone who calls a female character their "waifu" is reducing the character to only that is problematic and false in most cases.  It assumes the worst in people.

To be fair, it's entirely possible I'm still hung up on this list.
I wouldn't be, if it wasn't so damn true.

It's a word and it has a meaning, it doesn't matter the intention or the people using it. It's the same reason people call for the Washington Redskins to change their team name, because it's offensive and harkens back to a day when you could make money off of scalping Native Americans. Albeit this is a lot tamer than that, it's still very much a valid criticism.

I disagree entirely with that sentiment.  Context is everything.

The context is you're using the word to describe a female character. Whether or not your intentions are tame, you're still enforcing something by using it. It's like using a wife-kitchen joke. Being tongue-in-cheek or lax about it doesn't make it any more immune from criticism.

The difference is that a joke about women belonging in a kitchen is a joke about women belonging in a kitchen.

Waifu is a word created by the internet about cartoon characters and is the engrish version of the word wife.  It enforces nothing because there was never any ill-intent to begin with.  You can't retroactively apply negative stigma to words.

Do you tell African Americans you see to stop using the n-word because context doesn't matter?

So guys what do you think about the new stage builder, and the "100% into a hazard=dead" thing?

I bet the first thing everyone will make is this:

The fact that you can design with vectors instead of just a limited selection of items is gonna be awesome.

The concept of waifu is degrading.

Getting rid of the female characters to stop idiots from being idiots is not the way to deal with it though.

The only way to deal with it is to try to convince non-idiots to not give idiots reason to be idiots.

Honestly, when I first heard the term "waifu" I thought iwas just a silly joke. Like, you think the character is attractive, but they are an imaginary character so your talking about it in a jokey manner.

That is why I don't touch the sports bra ZZS.

To avoid some bullsh*t discrimination made by people who can't take a chill pill?

Heck, I'll play as sports bra ZSS to admire her body, but we all know the best Samus is the one in the suit.

If I want to admire Smash females' bodies, I'll go to fakku.net or e-hentai

Or Google.

Regardless, I don't mind 'waifus' I mean, if you wanna play with a character you like...as in, really like...well, good on ya.

Fakku.net what's that I've never heard of it I don't know what you're talking about man.

Fair point.

But I mean....at least wait till the Wii U version comes out

XD

Pfft, of course. Heck, the 3DS version is mostly just a demo version of the Wii-U version. Sure, there are a few exclusive stuff, but the Wii-U version relatively surpasses pretty much everything else.
