Mr.Robot
Surprisingly, after confirming that there would be an 8th series/34th season with both Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman returning, BBC announced another news a week later stating that Matt Smith is leaving after this year's christmas special. So who would you like to see as the next Doctor? Personally, I would like to see Tim Roth playing the regenerating time lord. Tim Roth, a very underrated British actor would be perfect to play a very detached Doctor that Christopher's Doctor supposed to be and continuing the "I'm too old for this shit" that Matt did so wonderfully. or Cillian Murphy. another underrated actor famous for his chameleonic performance in diverse roles. Since the Valeyard explain that he is the product of the Doctor's darker side in between the 12th and the 13th, Cillian would be perfect to play a more menacing or just plain old darker Doctor. So, what bout your picks?
L0SS
Tim Roth would be interesting, although I don't know if he would fit the current direction that the show is taking; I think someone younger and with more energy would be better. Cillian Murphy is a decent actor, although again, I can't see his characterisation quite fitting the current format. I think you'd need an actor with a mixture of dark wit and young enthusiasm. A kind of wise, all-knowing intellect helps. I'd personally love to see Benedict Cumberbacth fill the role; he's a great actor, and has the blend of intelligence and vibrancy that fits the show at the moment. I don't think he'd do it, though, as he likes playing different roles, and it would probably be too similar to his character in Sherlock. Actually though, just John Hurt. Can they just keep John Hurt forever? I'm in love with John Hurt.
mitchermitcher
Hm, I'm not too familiar with the Who-verse except for the first season of the 11th doctor...but if I remember correctly, the Doctor can have up to 13 incarnations, including the first one, right? Does this mean the series is gonna end soon?

Personally... Cumberbatch would be a dream, but it would be to similar to him in Sherlock, only with bad writing. I don't think I actually mind who gets the role, I just want the writing quality to improve, because with Matt Smith... it's all just fallen flat time and again. He already had the task of following Tennant, who is widely held as the best Doctor of all time, but he's never been close enough.

The writing is such an integral part of a sci fi like Who, and without a decent storyline to act as a foundation, it falls apart. I personally thought Eccleston was best, acting wise. He had a great blend of oddball humour, a darker side, and a believability to him. I'd have loved to see him stay for another series.

Gαr
I personally don't care who plays the next Doctor. I don't see John Hurt playing the next, but maybe the one after that.

ListenToLife
Since the Valeyard explains that he is the product of the Doctor's darker side in between the 12th and the 13th 12th and *final incarnation. Never specifically stated 13. And while originally, yes, the timelords had a limit of 13, many have bypassed that. The master stole regenerations, for example. So the doctor could have more, taking into account how river gave hers to him. Oh, and it was actually the Master who said it, not the Valeyard. Aaaaaaanyway, onto le topic. Yeah...no, not John Hurt, I think. I think he's either the Valeyard or the final doctor. Cos, y'know, he gives up the name 'The Doctor', so it can either be when he dies, or when he's not the Doctor anymore. As for the next one, my vote goes for Colin Morgan, to be honest. He seems to have everything it needs; he's funny, awkward, intelligent and enthusiastic. The only problem is he's already played one of the BBC saturday night shows; Merlin. That, and he's already been in Doctor Who. (Though, to be fair, John Hurt played a big character in the same show.) But half of the other candidates have been is aswell. Even Billie Piper wants a go! >.> EDIT I've actually just seen a pretty good idea: Rupert Grint. I mean, he's a great actor, again has all the stuff. And the best bit? He's ginger! It's the Doctor's dream come true.

And it's been stated many times that Time Lords had a limited regenerative cycle of twelve regenerations, consisting of thirteen incarnations, after which they would suffer permanent death. Also, Clara went into the 11th's timestream so that makes John Hurt's Doctor a past Doctor that was not called the doctor or something. The 10th Doctor did say that they got extra regeneration cycle if they fight in the time war so maybe he's a time war regeneration. OT: Rupert Friend's the one I wanna see as the Doctor. And the master has had many more than 13 incarnations. In 'The Deadly Assassin' it's stated the Master was on his 13th incarnation. This was in 1976. So he's had more. And it doesn't make it a past doctor. They dont go into the 11th's timestream; they go into the Doctor's TimeStream. The whole of his travels, from his first to last incarnation. It leaves this one up to being the doctor at any point in his life. It's actually likely that it's the 12th one, going just by how he turned up. The other doctors turned up in order, and John Hurt turned up just after Matt's.

Are we saying that he had a universal knowledge of himself within the time stream, or what? I personally align with the theory that John Hurt is the 9th Doctor, during the Time War, with Eccleston's being the 10th, and so on.

I'm sorry, in the Episode when John Hurt was revealed, the Doctor visited his own grave. Not to mention, he's already visited future incarnations anyway. May I point out the 50th anniversary special is going to have 4-5 doctors in it or so, and there have been many other instances when the Doctor met himself, or screwed with time-like that. The Doctor meeting a future self is not new.
