Learn to use gradient maps a bit more effectively, really will help. Think about C4D/Fractal placement beforehand rather than just spamming it on. I'm not too sure if gimp has a cloud function, from what I can remember it does but, (it's under filter>render in photoshop) but once you've got some clouds down play around with blending options and opacity.
