The Great Gatsby

I just saw it today, overall it was a great movie. Leonardo Dicaprio was absolutely brilliant. He should get an Oscar for his performance, and the movie should get one for visual effects. I really love how well they portrayed the 1920's, the costumes, hairstyles, and even the way they talked was authentic.

I plan to see it soon. Looks like a great adaptation of the book. The soundtrack is pretty good too.

Oh yes, I agree. I can't believe I forgot to mention that. Hmm it was mainly Florence +The Machine, and Lana Del Ray, and a couple of other artists that I need to check out.

Oscars? I don't think so. Leo was on autopilot, and the film in general was rather vulgar style over substance. It really didn't have the draw and intimacy that the book did. Like Dae said, it also skipped over some of the important areas from the book. I tired of it very quickly.

Far from actually. It is more so for movie-to-book adaptions. The problem with Book-to-Movie adaptions is the priority of. They don't skip over key parts, just imply them. This movie did none whatsoever, as like the end with Jay's father in the book. It was never mentioned at all, which was one of the most important things for me.

Remember people, this is just the latest movie adaptation of the book. There are earlier adaptations around.

Yes, yet we are referring to the new one. I should watch the ones before. I heard some good things about them, though most of my friends have horrible taste in things.

The last book-to-movie film I've seen(IIRC) was the Hunger Games when it first came out, so I'm a bit rusty on it all.

"Why does this novel retain such a firm grip on our up-to-the-minute today, even as it is borne back ceaselessly into the past? First, because it represents a declaration of independence by American writing, a noticeably native style and subject owing little to the old European school."

As Hitchens said, Gatsby is the American Brideshead, or rather, Brideshead is the English Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann may be quite a bold director, but you need that to capture the wild fatalism of Harding's America. I just wonder how well he can capture the fragility of the interpersonal relationships of Gatsby.
