Great Unclean One: VK
So YCM. What's your dream job? How are you making your way to it? Do you know the benefits and downsides to it? I want to be a video game programmer. Now to the uninitiate, it sounds like I'll be playing video games all year. Well you're fucking wrong. It means working an average 80 hour work week for a few months before being plunged into a 100-160 hour work week. No overtime pay since you're salaried. Compared to other programmers, you make much much less (Average game code monkey being $66k a year compared to the $80-$90 a year for other code monkeys). You don't see a dime from the game you make, you don't own royalty, you don't own jack. You some how made a blockbuster game with all your heart and soul? Guess what, it's not yours, and enjoy Blizzard, EA, or Crapcom making it into shit while you're fired. Though you tend to get paid more out of the developers and have much much more vacations. Most have 25 days a year plus holidays. You don't get the spotlight compared to game DESIGNERS (Who have to write essays and what not to the fat cats on WHY the game should be made) who get all the spotlight while you toil and get all the blame when the game goes to shit. You're easily replaced by a 19 year old intern who'll do a shitty job but have the energy to do it. You're expected to give up your family, friends, and relations to continue making the game when crunch comes. Enjoy having a divorce on your way. Enjoy either going home in the late morning to wake up again a few hours later and come back home, if you even leave. Enjoy having the love and passion for your childhood and games to be sucked right out of you and replaced by hate and loathing. Enjoy having your hard work, dreams, and love being milked by corporate fat cats and turn into a lifeless husk. Enjoy losing your health, family, friends, wife, children, husband, girlfriend, or boyfriend. Enjoy knowing that the older code monkeys will haze you and try to make you quit since they're filled with contempt for you, and you'll do the same soon. Enjoy knowing that once you've completed a project, you're thrown away with no job in sight since you're nothing but a cog that can and will be replaced. This is all I picked up from veteran game programmers and it's getting worse year after year. This is the job I crave and willingly throw myself at. Only thing is, many sucklings race in for the big companies only to be thrown away. I at least look for indie groups to join.
Makο
I think I would love to run a small family resturaunt somewhere. A little quaint out-of-the-way joint with a friendly and snug atmosphere. That sounds divine.
Thar
I'm pursuing a career in the Engineering field, primarily mechanical and secondarily architectural. Right now I am in an Associate's degree program and I'm about to earn my certificate for using AutoCAD. Hopefully I'll land a job as a drafter to start it out. I'll be learning 3D modeling in a bit, which might come in handy with a possible career in Game Design, mostly world building. As far as unrealistic dream jobs, I'd like to be a part of a highly sponsored gaming video-making company such as Achievement Hunter. I'd also like to be an actor, mostly because I am just so bored that I often talk in several different voices and make interesting dialogues and screenplays with myself. Cin
I wish to be a Teaching Assistant, I've done about 2 years now voluntary work and am just over 2 months off finishing a course that will qualify me for Level 1 and Level 2 positions (I don't wish to follow the course up with a Level 3 qualification as I'd need to be employed and I can see that not happening for about a year). It's took me long enough to work out what I wanted to do and move on it since I'm 26 in October. (I remember having a teacher in Sixth Form who was only 29)

bury the year
Either work as a member of the Foreign Service or UN (and yeah, having to move around every three years would be annoying), work at a non-profit as an aide worker, or work for a consulting firm for international businesses. The unrealistic option would be the first one of the list - you don't know how many levels of examinations and reviews you have to take to actually get anywhere. I have no illusions there. =__=

Great Unclean One: VK
Librarian. Who wouldn't want to have a laid back job with a quiet atmosphere and all the books you could ever want. I hope you can afford the absurd amount of money you need to get into that. There's a reason why I stopped wanting to be a librarian. You need to go to certified expensive schools and have the best grades.

You need to go to certified expensive schools and have the best grades. I can manage that. Getting into a college won't be a problem and neither will scholarships. My GPA is only at a 3.5 right now, but considering how many volunteer hours I have to go through for school anyways, I'm sure colleges won't mind. If it all pays off in the end, why worry about how to get there?

Rapidfire
Something that will keep me on my feet, and or keep me busy. I need a job where I can travel, and live. I'm so into living life to it's fullest, and I'd love to do something with art, and music, and maybe even journalism. I'm so in love with performing/visual arts, I really want to do something, anything that involves this. I honestly don't care how hard it is, how much food I can afford, or how poor I might be. As long as I can pour my heart, dedication, and love into it. I could never do something I hate. No matter how much money I would make. I'm at the point where doing what I love is really hard and I'm beginning to realize how much this actually means to me. Every day it becomes harder and harder not to break into song, or sketch, or pour my feelings into words. I'm starting to find myself, and this is why I know I'll do something in the arts department. I'm dead set on it, and it's really hard to get me off something when I'm burning up at just the thought of it.

Either the topics I post that doesn't have me talking about how shit my life is going to be (at best) are ignored or deleted. Just wait for 2 more years. Tentacruel
I'd like to point out that the programmer rant in the OP is partially hyperbole. A 160 hour work week is quite literately impossible, and the average salary is actually bit higher than what was listed. Even still, indie is the way to go.
