I feel generous

What am I offering?

I am on a gap year before going to university and starting my degree in Professional design. So this is kind of a 'help me help you' situation. I am willing to give out absolutely FREE lessons in 3D, traditional art, photography, digital design and cinematics. There's not catch, there's no gimmick  or any of that crap.

Why am I offering it?

The only reason of me doing this is that it will help me achieve two things I am longing for; helping people (I like to do it, it's one of my beliefs) and keeping up/improving my own techniques.

How will this work?

You choose the way. Facebook, twitter, e-mail, Teamviewer, etc. (I don't do skype, apologies). If you also wish I can take real life videos of me explaining the technique and such. I am willing to go on for hours and hours on videos and recording. I don't mind at all.

All I want from you is to clearly tell me what you're struggling with, want to improve or what you want to start to learn. I will try my best to actually help you.

This is not a team, this is not a one man thing. If you like the idea and want to share some techniques or something specific with people you can do the same. Take video, get on teamviewer, etc.

This is generally to keep the activity rising here too. This place is pretty dead if you ask me and it would be nice if we have our own little thing going.

Lend me your brain babe.

Also, I'd be willing to assist anyone as well. We'd need a system to keep this all organized though.

I am open to suggestions for this system you speak of. If it helps, I'll be on facebook 5 AM (3:00+ GMT), we can discuss it then if you're free and hopefully get an idea of what's going to happen.

I've never had any actual education on design or anything... so where do I start? What are the very basics?

Let us first establish what you want to achieve. There are a large amount of styles and sub categories in the design section. What are you looking to achieve? Is it illustration? (This is mainly stuff like Character design, paintings, photomanipulation, etc) Is it Traditional oil painting or digital oil painting or 3D sculpting, etc. To help you I need to see some examples of images you are interested in so I can put you in a specific category in which I will be able to set up the lessons and concepts you'll need to know.

I'd like to do digital painting, such as concept art.

Additional Info:

I have drawn traditionally with pencil in black and white for years and dabbled a bit into watercolour as well (barely).

do have a tablet as well as Photoshop Elements.

I have next to no experience in digital art.

Honestly, that's more than enough past experience.

All you truly need is patience and determination, if you are serious about it. Trust me, you'll be absolutely terrible at first regardless of how good you are with a pencil, It's almost demeaning.

The only thing I will stress is that graphic design and any art form requires diligence and if you plan on quitting after 3 sessions, I'll be quite honest, do not waste my time, nor yours.

Make sure it's something that you want, that part is imperative.

Very true. Art is about patience. Anny art you want to learn is about patience.

I'll get on with getting a few lessons together for you. We'll start with the most exigent fundamentals (Perspectives, anatomy, colour theory etc.)

Actually, if I could get lessons on the digital painting that would be great. Always wanted to do it.

I DONT have a tablet however, and I honestly have no intention to get one.

Only kind of past experience I have is a little dabbling in making tags :I

Not a problem. I used to paint with a mouse. You'll be just fine. I have to warn you though, it will be REALLY frustrating for you because you'll need more time and more editing.

I will start later on today with perhaps making a video or simply writing up a lesson for you guys. It WILL be long so make sure you read it and take notes of the important things.

I would love to learn things about DP'ing, so count me in. I would be willing to buy any programs/a tablet, or whatever is necessary, since this is one of those things that I've always wanted to get into.

Much like Ke-Nan, the only experience I've had is doing some tags (in GIMP), though I know a lot of the basics etc.

Can somebody teach me how to make tags and logos please? Below is some stuff that I can remember off the bat that I have, I know how to use (somewhat), and etc. The reason I have all this is because my dad uses this sort of stuff a lot, the computer's from him, and carried over programs and etc.

I have

• Wacom Tablet

• CS5 and CS6 Photoshop

• CS5 Illustrator

• Very few basics in digital art

• 1900X1200 Lion Mac OS X V10.7.5

• Tons of the other Adobe stuff like InDesign and more

• A couple of logos and tags people seem to like (that I made by messing around with effects and such on Photoshop till it looked decent xP)

• IDK? I might have more stuff which I could use, but didn't know they existed or I could use them for that or how to use.

For the most part, I can definitely see this progressing and perhaps becoming the very thing this section needs right now.

We'll need a system as I hinted at prior, something that could make this long term and efficient.

  • Tiers of learning: I probably won't have time to coach complete beginners, so other instructors who perhaps are still at the novice stage could potentially be perfect for them since they use the same tactics per say. I personally don't want to teach the basics since it's been forever since I've even consolidated such factors, however things such as vectoring, that's something I've been attempting to perfect every time I open GIMP recently.
  • Instructors: For complete beginners we'll need novice instructors, for novice artists we'll need moderate instructors (perhaps Rai or CM), and for moderate artists we'll need intermediate instructors per say. All hypothetical of course, I'd still take novice artists regardless of my sexy intermediate status, similarly to how I would indefinitely take a lesson from Rai because there's still a lot I can learn from him. Don't let the classing intimidate you, this only acts as a standard per say.
  • Registration: For organization purposes and time keeping.

Programs;

  • TeamViewer: Used to allow others to view your screen in a meeting-like fashion. Great for showcasing due to the highlight function and what-not.
  • Msn/Skype: For conversing purposes.
  • Twitch+ Recording software: We could have public lessons in which someone live streams certain things for everyone to witness, I think there's potential in that.
  • Other?: Any other suggestions for optimal efficiency would be great.

'Just some things we should consider and discuss.

I will honestly take on complete beginners. I will suggest that EVERYONE—even Amir— to look at the fundamentals since I myself was shocked from all of the basics I haven't known about.

But before I start my work; what would you guys prefer? Bulk lessons (will take probably a week or more to finish) or a few lessons a day? Reply back instantly so I'd know exactly where to source this project.

This please, I would love a special short segment on lessons for artists without tablets. I have an iPad, but it's too much trouble drawing with your finger.

Alright can't wait. Since I really want to get into Digital painting/tagging or w/e, what would be a good tablet to buy for DPing?

I have a Wacom Bamboo, and I hear that's the best for amateurs. They're around $100.

Besides size, what's better about it?

The driver behind it is smoother. It generally leads to better pressure control, and the nibs are slightly higher quality (so last longer). It's essentially a larger Bamboo that fixes any flaws that the Bamboo has. I find that it's better investing in an Intuos after getting used to how tablets work. I'd also say that it just generally feels more natural.
