Northern Sage
I thought this could be an interesting topic. Normally, your relatives (especially close family) have at least some form of influences, but they can come from anywhere. My old english teacher, for example, introduced me to Alanis Morisette. Susie
My musical taste actually comes from my parents As well as recommendations from others And being more open minded to other's music My mom used to play some Metal and electronic in the car While my dad used to play softer mellow stuff, and singer/songwriter stuff too And while hanging around the music section in here and other places I've been able to take other's recommendations and listen to what others post
Lonk
Video Gaming had introduced me to some forms of music, but I didn't think much of it at first. It was until PM:TTYD, Golden Sun and Tales of Symphonia that I really began looking into Video Game music. In other, blame Yuka Tsujiyoko and Motoi Sakuraba for my appreciation for Video Game Music. NotKrow
Originally I had only listened to music that my parents listened too, but then I started the branch out and look at other genre's of music. I pretty much listen to every genre of music except most Country.
Zazubat
When I was around 10-12 I watched this music video show which showed the top 10 of the viewers choices. It was much for teens I remember, and I got into rap around that time. But then it started with Tokyo Hotel and other crap music, so I stopped. Some time after I started listening to rock and punk, and found Fueled by Ramen's Youtube channel. I then started to listen to more hard rock and heavy metal, but at some point I also began to like eletronic music, but I didn't listen to it as much. Sometime around 3 years ago, I just stopped listening to very much music. Later I got more into eletronic music, and starting listening to artists like Deadmau5 and Skrillex. I realized soon that there was many different genres in terms of eletronic music, and discovered Monstercatmedia on youtube, which just let me to only listen to EDM (eletronic dance music) and not really listen to much else. I do like other genres though. I don't remember much of why I started to listen to so different styles, my parents listen to pop music mostly but something like this changes over time. Who knows, maybe I'll start listening to something else in the future, but I very much doubt it.
.Corgi
Dad was the biggest prog rock nerd. That's the reason I'm a massive hipster.
Shradow
My parents, mostly, though I've branched out quite far on my own. Growing up, I listened mostly to the Beatles, Earth, Wind & Fire, and orchestral music (my grandfather on my mom's side was also a reputable trumpet player who played for people like Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra, and my mom and I have both played in concert bands throughout school), so my tastes lied around that. However nowadays I'll pretty much listen to anything except Country (it all sounds the same to me, and boring). I'm easily entertained and not picky, so that's pretty much why. Though orchestral music is still my favorite.
Cin
A friend introduced me to SOiL through an MV he'd done (Halo is still one of my songs and I got to hear it Live), Downhill Domination introduced me to Cinder (they had Soul Creation in the in game music.). My Christian Rock tastes really started from an AMV my friend showed of Thousand Foot Krutch (Phenomenon or Move I can't remember), before that I'd only stuck to Blessid Union Of Souls (Brother my Brother from Pokemon The Movie)
Rapidfire
Well the thing is it's more like different people introduce me to different types of music and bands. My dad introduced me to classic rock, and all the legends. Marisa introduced me to a loooot of indie. One of my friends listens to a lot of fucked up music so he always introduces me to a couple of songs I'll dislike for the rest of my life. But most of my music taste comes through the people I talk to, and through countless hours of looking up songs/artists. Honestly my music taste is always being impacted by everything. ChibiFan7
wow this is a awesome thread! my musical tastes come from a number of places..it all started with my mom and aunt..growing up listening to oldies music from the 50s and 60s. also listened country music but eventually grew out of that quickly, i still listen to some but mostly the older stuff. later on hanging out with my uncles bob and his sons michael and robert i was exposed to Classical music(very soothing and relaxing) metal(whcih i took a liking to) rap(the same thing as country...just like the older rap groups) and i was also expsed to new age groups like Enigma and Enya...which i took a liking to! again in my teen years through thanks to my friends in school i was exposed to even more heavy metal music. and i got into video game soundtrack through...video games. LOL(obvious) and then later on through the use of the internet i got into techno and dark electro and industrial type music.

And unlike some, my music tastes don't originate from my parents, if anything, they started from from my grandparents, but for the most part i developed my own more in-depth musical tastes
Dismal Euphony
When I was really young, I was into rap/hip-hop. It was all I really knew because of its popularity where I grew up; my brothers, friends, and friends' families all listened to it. Then, towards the end of 2000, I was hanging out in my brother's room playing PS2, listening to one of his rap CDs when he came home. When he walked in, he walked over to his stereo and put in three of Metallica's first CDs--Kill Em' All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. For the rest of the night, he and I sat in his room and listened to them over and over and over again. It was amazing. I had never heard anything like it before because I was so used to him listening to rap in his car, etc. From that day on, I stopped listening to rap. It didn't have the appeal that Metallica did. I eventually discovered more classics through my brother. Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc. But, that wasn't heavy enough. I scoured the internet for stuff heavier, finding more (at the time) underground bands. I ended up buying Children of Bodom's new album, Follow the Reaper. From that point on, I just explored more metal and all of its sub-genres. And that pretty much brings us up to date. :P Sorry for the wall of text.
