Spellcaster2000
This guide should tell you all about the important factors in getting a competitive Pokemon. Let's say we want to make an amazing Feraligatr (one of my favourite Pokemon) If we look on Feraligatr's pages on Smogon (a website with Pokemon movesets and EV spreads) in the OU section we can see a bunch of random stuff including moves, EV spreads and natures. NATURES The first thing that we will look at is natures. If you look at any Pokemon, it will have a nature like 'Adamant' or 'Hasty'. These are the Pokemon version of personalities, and they affect a Pokemon's stats. Each nature makes a certain stat stronger, and another weaker. If you go to Bulbapedia on the natures page, you can see what each does. Now, that Smogon page tells us to give Feraligatr an adamant nature. But why? Well, the adamant nature raises Attack but lowers Special Attack. Because Feraligatr uses physical moves in this moveset, Special Attack is useless. Get it? So how do we get this nature? If you put to Pokemon in the daycare, one of the parents having an everstone will increase the chances of the child having that parents nature. Let's say we breed a male Feraligatr with a female Lapras. This Lapras has the adamant nature, and is holding the everstone. Ta da! The baby Totodile is adamant! IVs So you've done that. Let's move on to IVs. When a Pokemon is first created, a number from 0 to 31 is randomly chosen for each stat. Here are the baby's. HP: 27 ATTACK: 12 DEFENSE: 9 SPECIAL ATTACK: 31 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 12 SPEED: 7 These are the Pokemon's IVs. If the Pokemon was obtained through breeding, a random IV from either parent is chosen to replace one of the babies IVs depending on which stat the IV is from. Let's say the father Feraligatr's Attack IV was chosen, which is 15. HP: 27 ATTACK: 15 DEFENSE: 9 SPECIAL ATTACK: 31 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 12 SPEED: 7 This happens again. The father's Defence IV is chosen this time. HP: 27 ATTACK: 15 DEFENSE: 4 SPECIAL ATTACK: 31 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 12 SPEED: 7 This happens one last time. The mother's Attack IV is chosen and replaces the Attack IV of the child. HP: 27 ATTACK: 11 DEFENSE: 4 SPECIAL ATTACK: 31 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 12 SPEED: 7 So those are the child's IVs. These numbers are then simply added to each stat. So how do you control them? One answer. Power items. The power items are: Power Weight - HP Power Bracer - Attack Power Belt - Defence Power Lense - Special Attack Power Band - Special Defense Power Anklet - Speed If either parent holds one of these, the will most likely pass down their IV of the stat the item relates to instead of what they would have. Only one parent gets this bonus. What if instead of Lapras passing down her Attack IV, she had the Power Anklet and passed down her speed. The attack would change back and the speed would change. HP: 27 ATTACK: 15 DEFENSE: 4 SPECIAL ATTACK: 31 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 12 SPEED: 31 See how high her Speed IV was? That ended up being a great bonus! Now, I'm not happy with these IVs, so I'll get a new Totodile with some more breeding. HP: 30 ATTACK: 26 DEFENSE: 18 SPECIAL ATTACK: 15 SPECIAL DEFENSE: 14 SPEED: 31 This one is tough. You can't actually see a Pokemon's IVs, but you can use an online IV calculator to find out your Pokemon's IVs. You can also talk to the blue haired boy in the Battle Subway. He will tell you how good your Pokemon's best IV is. EVs Coming Soon The Final Easy Stuff Coming Soon
Kazooie
These already exist all over the internet, and these do it much better. Plus the majority of YCM doesn't care about competitive battling, and the minority who do can find it on a much better site then YCM.

Kazooie
Couldn't one argue that Jappio's splicing tutorial is also useless because of other sites? Come on, I worked hard on this. There are a million things in this world that mimic other things. Go and complain to them. I bet smogon wasn't the first resource for Pokemon movesets. That is a terrible response. The tutorials I linked are strictly better then yours. That was the point I made there. Second, it doesn't matter how hard you work unless it's at least as good as the current tutorials, this isn't. Third, that's a horrible comparision and you should feel bad. Smogon might not have been the first, it was and is the best. It also goes indepth on the metagame and has logical reasoning for each moveset, along with counters for almost every Pokemon that's used. Fourth, why put this on YCM? If it was in a club for competitive battling, at least there would be a reason, but here there isn't. There is a very small minority of YCM interested in competitive Pokemon, and you're look at maybe one of the five/six.
Tourmaline
One of five or six? It isn't so much on the topic, but I do wonder who they are. I think this could be a viable topic, though. There is a topic on the individual Pokemon games, but none on the competitive battling as a whole. Perhaps if you could organize this a bit better and then make a whole set or two for a Pokemon at a reasonable interval plus other relevant information or fun tips. Maybe include a moveset that isn't seen so often but is still fun and efficient, like my Grotle. Assuming you're diligent, that is.

Flame Dragon
I know this is going to sound rude, but I do agree with Kanade, I don't see much point to this guide. The info on how a nature will act is now told in game by the coloring of different stats. EV are very simple once you figure out 4 EV = 1 point, 255 is the max for one stat, and 510 over all max. EV gain is based on a pokemon's stage (1, 2, or 3) and what their highest base stat is. IVs are the most complex, but even that amounts to 3 parent IV's being passed down and luck. If you want to talk about making competitive teams and how to enter the competitive mindset thats a much better topic, but even that I feel would be better covered in a thread made to talk about pokemon in broad stokes. I'm sorry, but I'm going to lock this. If you wish to make a thread for general pokemon talk and have that move out of the XY Thread you are more than welcome to do so.
