Susie
I thought that this was worth discussing, Grunge music You know bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc.
CinnamonStar
Can't warm up to it. I appreciate what those bands have done not only music-wise, but as a social movement (Nirvana etc.), but the sound in the music genre doesn't really attract me. Been trying to get into some Soundgarden though and some people I know listen to Pearl Jam. Nirvana is kind of impossibru for me though.D:

You say no to Nirvana? Even their awesome cover of The Man Who Sold The World?!? I haven't heard too much from Soundgarden though Black Hole Sun is a pretty good song, at least to me It's understandable if you don't like the sound of it, Grunge is a pretty dark type of music
Dismal Euphony
I never could get into grunge. At all. I don't even know what it is, but it's so off-putting for me. Also, one of my biggest pet peeves is that everyone praises Kurt Cobain as some sort of musical genius. Nirvana was mediocre at best; Kurt's abilities as a singer/guitarist were average at most. His reputation precedes him. Greatly.

Hmmm....I guess that's true, I could name off loads of songwriters That are better than Kurt The reason why I like him so much are those low vocals They seem to fit in with the Grunge style to me He did start up quite the change in rock music Though that's the closest that I can get to calling him "A musical genius"

I don't listen to either band, but Pearl Jam is leagues ahead of Nirvana in almost every way and I feel as though they only get a fraction of the recognition that Nirvana gets. This leads me to ask the age-old question: is/was Nirvana so prominent because of Kurt's death? People are attracted to death, and it's evident. Take a look at every musical artist that passed before their time... Hell, when Amy Winehouse died she went from a since-forgotten star to being #1 on iTunes charts. I hate sounding so cynical, but I've always had the nagging feeling that if Kurt never died, Nirvana would have died out and just been one of those "flavor of the week" type bands. There were a few bands that contributed to the grunge movement Thought the most prominent ones were Nirvana and Pearl Jam The death of Kurt was probably one of the things that contributed to Nirvana being well known way past their time Though Pearl Jam are still well remembered, maybe not as well remembered, but they still are named at the same level as Nirvana I'd say maybe a little bit more than a fraction, though yes a small amount compared to Nirvana And I do agree that Pearl Jam are way ahead of Nirvana, though I listen to both of them

The whole Grunge thing is not too bad, but it's probably the whole garage-ish/throaty sound that doesn't interest me.

That makes more sense Grunge isn't really the genre for everyone I personally like it because it portrays emotions very well In both it's instrumentation, and lyrics as well as the vocals But still it's not the thing that everyone would like

seattleite
Grunge is very diverse. I don't like Nirvana that much (and it's too bad that's what everyone thinks of when they hear "grunge"), but Grunge had lots of other lower-profile artists which were very different from Nirvana. Mudhoney is one of them, there's also L7, Dandelion, Love Battery, Babes in Toyland, Greta, etc. There's something for [almost] everyone.
