Online multiplayer gaming on the PS4 will require a $50 per year subscription to PlayStation Plus, matching a similar requirement for Xbox Live Gold to get online multiplayer on Microsoft's systems.

Elsewhere on Twitter, Sony provided some good news to potential PlayStation 4 owners who might want to buy games from across the ocean. In response to a direct question, Sony third-party relations manager Brad Douglas tweeted that "SCEI PR tells me 'no region locking' [for the PS4]."

Meanwhile, an official fact sheet distributed alongside today's press conference confirms that extra Dualshock 4 controllers for the PlayStation 4 will run $59, €59, or £54, depending on region. The new, depth-sensing PlayStation Eye camera will run a similar $59, €49 or £44. Sony also noted that the PlayStation 4 will sport a standard 500 GB hard drive—the same size as that inside the Xbox One—in addition to confirming many previously revealed stats for the system.

At this point, the only thing holding me back is that this doesn't have backwards compatibility. Oh well, I should be able to keep it close to my PS3 anyway.

ok ok the ps3 can accpet ps1 and ps2 games and the original wii can accepte gamecube games so do not sell then X3

Sony exec Jack Tretton just told Spike that hotly-anticipated PlayStation game The Last Guardian is on hiatus.

People are freaking out about the above link, but doesn't it just mean things like the online pass? ._.

I think that the fact that Sony gives the creators the right to do what they want is the best option, and really that's all they have to do. They shouldn't restrict them just because they wish to publish on their console. As Jack Tretton said himself "We’re going to give them a platform to publish on." and that is all it should. I honestly don't think I could agree more with what he has to say on this.

You're comparing apples to oranges there. Paying for Plus is less than $5 a month but if you add in native BC that will add significant cost to the PS4. Are you planning on selling your PS3 by any chance? If you're not, then why can't you unplug a PS4 and plug in a PS3? And at least Sony is doing something to try and meet the needs of those wanting BC unlike Microsoft. And don't even put the Wii U into this argument because then I'll have to direct you to its inferior hardware (don't take this as me saying the Wii U sucks because that's not what I'm saying at all).

I've resigned to the idea to the idea that Wii U is weaker because of the BC.

Paying for PS+ adds up over time, though. I would keep my PS3 in order to at least play PS2 game, but I would have appreciated if the PS4 could play PS3 games. But yeah, I'll admit that Sony is still being more favorable than Microsoft, who is saying that if you disagree with their stupid ideas, then go buy a 360.

See, while most people want BC, they would complain about a $500 price point.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.  Or if you do, you can't complain about the price of it.

The reason the Wii U is BC is because it, like the Wii, has a PowerPC-based architecture, so it can easily have native BC.  Even if it's not the case, the Wii is basic enough to put it on a chip in the Wii U without costing too much.

The PS3 on the other hand, has a very foreign, very alien Cell architecture, while the PS4 has a much more practical x86 architecture.  The PS4 could have had easy BC if it also used Cell architecture, but this would have been an incredibly stupid decision.  As it stands, to have native backwards compatibility you'd need to literately stick a Cell processor in there, which would not be cheap.  There's a reason the PS3 is still so pricey.

Emulating the PS3 is also pretty much impossible due to the nature of it, so the only option is doing it elsewhere and beaming it to you via the cloud.

tl;dr:  Keep your PS3.

As much as I like backwards compatibility, Nintendo would be insane not to jump on the practical console design bandwagon next time they make a console, so I don't think we'll see Wii U BC on their next console.

Roxas, I wasn't aware that something like that existed for the Vita. Maybe the PS4 Gaikai BC feature will be something similar to that.

Comrade, yeah, I understood that to be the case and quite honestly, I'm not bothered by BC much at all as I plan on keeping my PS3 and I'm not the kind of person to replay old games much unless they were really memorable. Pretty much now I'm not even using BC on my fat PS3 at all.

I'm keeping my PS3, and I have enough room to fit the PS4 in the same area. I do agree that Nintendo shouldn't have Wii U backwards compatibility for their next system, because they really need to make something powerful. The problem is that Nintendo actually cares about the customer, which basically just creates the horrible message that caring about your consumer is going to bite you in the ass. Quite frankly, the next console should focus more on perfecting the Wii U's concept, even if it means backwards compatibility. Nintendo does like to keep backwards compatibility for the last gen, so while I know they won't have Wii discs be playable on it, Wii U discs are debatable.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the big problem isn't that the PS4 can't emulate stuff, but that the PS3 is too needlessly complicated to emulate? Fair enough.

I guess the PSP/Vita scenario really is more of an example of what could happen than I thought. Sony tried to make something unique with the UMD, but that didn't really catch on, hence why the Vita went with game cards instead. But yes, Blue, they had something fairly early into the Vita's life, but for whatever reason, Sony felt like screwing everyone else over.
