To recap; NGC 6357 is a nebula in the constellation Scorpius. It was actually given the name "War and Peace Nebula" by the MSX scientists, because they felt that in infrared images, the bright, western part resembles a dove, and in contrast, the eastern part resembles a skull. Fans of the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica noticed its alleged resemblance to their goddess, Madokami, and have thus started a petition to rename it the "Madokami Nebula".

Madokami is the goddess form of the main character Kaname Madoka after she (upon having experienced many hardships) sacrificed herself to make the world a better place and end a seemingly endless cycle of despair.

So far, over 10,000 have signed, and it leaves less than 5000 to sign.

Even though it won't really mean much (it will still be known and treated as NGC 6357), if the petition goes through, it may immortalize her status and anime itself as a whole. It won't be the first time an astronomical location has been named after something fictional, but it will be the first time it would be Japanese (or Asian in general).

The fact's just a bit intriguing, and really, I honestly hope it passes through. I mean it's not as ridiculous as other petitions that tend to fly about nowadays (building a Death Star? Genetically engineering cat girls?) nor will it affect much overall (it's just a renamed label, and the nebula holds little significance at all).

If anything, it's among the few unique petitions that require neither effort to accomplish nor significance in general. Just a simple renaming after a Japanese cult goddess.

What do you guys think?

@Tsundesu: Right here :3

@Maxxion: Actually, it's better translated as "Circle God", being a mash of 'Madoka' and 'Kami', which can be twisted into context to "God that ends Circles".

And besides, a part of cosmos finally being named something other than the above three ancient languages could be a turning point in the naming of astronomical objects, or at least a necessary deviation. The cosmos is huge, and there's no reason NOT to name it after yet another mythological invention of humankind. You can't just deny other sections of the world their right to name an object in space, and it would be a bit like racism (not exactly) to do so. It's only awkwardly-named from your own point of view~

But hey, everyone has their own varying opinion. It's fine, it's fine. Just my own personal opinion.

Okay, I suppose I see that point. And if you take the name that way isntead of my literal translate of two halves, it makes a little more sense. I still feel a bit iffy about using something from an anime, maybe something out of Japanese acneitn mythology would be better IMO.

Besides this highly awkward named, most of the cosmos is Roman, Greek, or Latin. Not Japanese. I will not support this name change.

Roman, Greek, or Latin. Aren't they the same? (O_o) Don't be racist.

There was a dinosaur named after Hogwarts. Why not a nebula named after something in anime?

[hr]I'd certainly support this if it makes manga/anime more popular :3 though I don't see how this affects anything. Just kinda cool.

But, how old do I have to be? What happens after I sign? Will they mail me something about it or give some other kind of notification?

I'd rather not get physical mail, though email, I couldn't care less.

But exactly. That's truly what I was saying.

[/sarcasm]

In all seriousness, while I'm not fine with it, I could care less about what it's called.

Wut? You have a grudge against anime?

Not a grudge, I just can't get into most because theydon't do anything for me.

The exceptions are early Pokemon, Black Butler and Anime Jesus Full Metal Alchemist.

OT: Sure, have your nebula be called whatever. It just loses a bit of its touch when you have to force it.

It's not as stupid as a petition I heard about that would have every state in the US adopt an official "State Pokemon".

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO REMEMBERS THAT! I'm sorry, but as far petitions go, that was the stupidist.

This one seems like an okay petition, I just don't see it going through. But if it does, I'll post a video of me baking my original post on this thread in cookie form and eat it.

The first one or Brotherhood?

Depends on the episode. Sometimes I think Brotherhood adds more to the series overall, but it can rush some of the great stories.

Ah... so there ARE anime you can get into, I'm sure we can find similar ones that suit your tastes.

Maybe, it just takes quite a bit to keep my interest. That's why I can't get into what is normally made in anime. Like, I couldn't even get into Bleach because too many things bugged me.

Bleach bugs everyone. It's considered and rated really bad and full of plot holes. What genres do you think you would enjoy? Psychological? Action?

OT: Can someone answer my questions?
