Here Halu will provide reviews on some of the most iconic and heartfelt romantic movies in entertainment history starting from Valentine's day until the last day of February! So set up your netflix and grab your popcorn this Valentine's Day! [spoiler=Day 1-Brief Encounter] Directed by: David Lean Year Released: 1945 Released in 1945, Brief Encounter was one of David Lean's most recognized works. It was joined by stars Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The film won the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, which is one of the greatest awards given to any movie. The film stars Celia Johnson as a housewife whose dull marriage changes when she meets Alec, with whom she has a slight affair with. The movie explores ones ability to seek more than you have and about how long commitments can last. The film was a landmark in filming and is recognized as one of the best romantic films in cinema history. It brought a good cast, a good director, and good source material to boot. Even to this day many of the concepts used in this movie are still used today. The idea of a woman seeking more than she has and the distress an ordinary life with no excitement can cause.[/spoiler] [spoiler=Day 2-When Harry met Sally...] Directed by: Rob Reiner Year Released: 1989 When Harry Met Sally is one of the most iconic films released in the 80's. Many of the relationship concepts it used are still talked about today and it was a landmark in film making. Rob Reiner demonstrated his ability to synchronize with actors to create a good plot line. The story revolves around Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) over a period of time as they meet in many chance encounters over the course of twelve years in New York City. The film begs the question, can a man and a woman ever just be friends? The film is notable for its technique of advertising which boosted its sales over the course of its film premiere. It is one of Rob Reiner's and Billy Crystals most notable works and is regarded as one of the best Romantic Comedy films in history.[/spoiler] [spoiler=Day 3-Before Sunrise] Directed by: Richard Linklater Year Released: 1995 One of Linklater's most famous films. It is the first film in a trilogy all directed by Richard Linlater and starring the talent Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. Julie Delpy plays a young french woman and Ethan Hawke plays a young American. they both meet on a trip to Vienna and begin their romantic story from there. The story, Like When Harry Met Sally, is also about chance encounters. The film was critically acclaimed and is one of the few movies on Rotten Tomatoes to reach the coveted 100% ranking. It employs very precise directing couples with a nice story and a strong cast. The film has become a cult hit along with its sequel, Before Sunset. Like many of Linlater's romantic films, the clash of personality traits is extremely distinct here. This is also what made Before Sunrise such a powerful film.
