Metal thread, yes, including all the metals [Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos]

It's fine if he wants to talk about the band and song in particular (which is why I added both into the title).
The Metal thread is a gathering place for fans of the genre and made for those who want to keep their stuff there, but if random Pop songs get their own thread, I don't see why this shouldn't.
If it turns into generic "Metal is da most superior, discuss!" blabber, I'll move it into the thread though.:3

OT: I used to be mostly a Gothic/Symphonic/Power/Melodic Death kind of gal (well, not surprising). The less exposed bands like How Like a Winter or Dark Lunacy were surprisingly great, don't know what happened to them. Realm of Chaos sounds acceptable, but not really my kind of stuff.

METEL IS THA BEST RARGHHHHHHH DETH 2 ALL BUT METEL

No, just kidding.

I used to be a big death metal fan when I was younger (Decapitated, Cryptopsy, early Cannibal Corpse, etc.), but I eventually moved onto symphonic metal because I was (and still kind of am) a sucker for booming orchestral melodies behind blast beats and growls. My tastes, while still vast and incorporative, typically fall more towards black metal and atmospheric black metal these days.

As for Bolt Thrower, they're a band that I never listened to much, but I have always respected. They're very serious about the material they release to their fans and they (from what I have heard) have always been consistent. Their name is stupid though. :l

Yeah, the name sounds like something Manowar would release...

One Death Metal band I liked was Morbid Angel.
...and that was probably it, unless you count earlier Paradise Lost material that dwelved into the genre.
If we talk about Melodic Death, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Dark Tranquility and In Flames were pretty much my go-to bands.

(Haha, actually the Metal elitists have become rare lately. It seems more like they left their spot for the "Asian Pop is SO different from slutty Amurrica" and "classic/soundtrack/Jazz music is the only real music out there" people. So I feel kind of bad about still dropping that sometimes.xD But I don't mind having a thread about the sub-genre or band in particular, even though it can technically be covered in the sticky).

Bolt Thrower was a Heavy Metal band that took a lot of stuff from Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k.  Hell, their album covers were artwork from the golden day of Games Workshop.

Also, the name refers to the war machines used in game.

Anyhow, anyone else likes to listen to 80's Metal?

Metal elitists wouldn't last long in the company of more "educated" music listeners haha. Also Cinna, can we change the metal thread to the metal/hardcore thread so there's room for a bit more variety?

As for this topic, I'm much more rooted in hardcore, but I do enjoy my fair share of metal. A few faves are Dark Tranquillity, Opeth, Agalloch, Dir en grey, Gojira, Meshuggah, Hacride, and Sybreed.

Well, that certainly makes sense... Still don't like the name for a band though. :P

You'd be surprised how long a metal elitist would last in the company of more "educated" listeners. A metal elitist would, without a doubt, listen to a widespread amount of metal and its sub-genres. As you delve into the more obscure sub-genres of metal, you'll notice a lot of bands have a lot of deep-seated influence from outside genres (classical, jazz, blues, etc.). Any seasoned, or educated, metal listener will probably have at least looked into where these bands have taken their influence from. A seasoned metal elitist and an "educated" music listener will surely find some common grounds for discussion somewhere. :P I've seen it happen!

I agree with you. I'm referring to your average internet "RAAAAEEEG METUL IS TEH ONLY TRU MUZAK" variety that are only in it because they're trying to be rebellious. I should've been more specific haha.

I didn't really understand this. What does mainstream metal have to do with anything previously mentioned? Maybe I'm missing something here. o_o

Waaa-

I didn't bring this up again, did I?._.

And Dismal, I think he was referring to mainstream music in general.

But that's another take on the story. How do people here feel about Metal that entered the mainstream? As far as I'm aware, Nightwish got quite some playtime at the latest since Nemo and probably more after Anette became their vocalist. Do bands stop being good because the rest of the population starts listening to them or is there something else to it?

I don't mind if a band becomes popular unless they sacrifice what made them good to begin with. Underoath's album Define the Great Line actually took a less mainstream route compared to what they were doing before and the album ended up being #2 on the Billboard 200 when it was released. Still one of my favorite albums ever.

Oh and thanks for changing the thread ^^

I personally don't mind when a band garners a bit of fame, as long as they don't let the fame get to their head. I noticed Amon Amarth is a lot more popular now then they were almost 10 years ago when I first started listening to them and their music is still just as good, if not better. The problems start to arise when bands start making music for the fame and not for themselves/their loyal fans. I noticed this happened to Children of Bodom. I've been listening to Bodom for almost 12 years now and I witnessed their rise into the "mainstream" and it really affected their music. Alexi started drinking and partying more and their music suffered as a result of his negligence (I guess you could call it).

I don't believe bands "stop being good" when they get popular or go mainstream. I believe they stop being good when they start making music for the wrong reasons. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I like that album, the sorrowful emotion and powerful atmosphere definitely perfected the album. I'm thinking of ordering the vinyl.

I picked up the album at a discount used-CD shop on a whim back in like 2008. The shop isn't really known for its black metal, so when I noticed something that even remotely resembled black metal, I figured, "why not?" For $3.99, you can't really go wrong. It was probably the best $3.99 I've spent in a long time. It's easily one of the best despressive black metal albums in my library.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the physical copy. I lent the album (along with others) to a "friend" who ended up selling all of them a day later. The vinyl seems like it'd be a cool purchase, but I have no use for vinyls. I don't really have much use for physical copies, in all honesty. I typically just rip them to my computer and sit the CD on a shelf.

$3.99 for a CD? That's pretty f*cking amazing! I could never find music to my interest at such a low price.

Also, that must really suck to lend your albums to a "friend" who ends up selling them. If someone sold one of my favorite albums, DOOM SHALL BE BROUGHT AMONG HIM :3

Off topic: I love your Immortal avatar "meanie..." xD
