Disable attachments. Yes or no?

tl;dr version - See title

 

Longer version - So like, every once in a while I check the report queue or something and there's reports about attachments. Namely, that attachments are being used. Sometimes I go into the CC topics to troll people and all I see are comments of "don't use attachments" and nothing else written.

 

I've asked the mods of the sections involved about it and pretty much always got varied responses. It's against the rules, it's not against the rules, it's "frowned upon", it's perfectly acceptable and etc etc, but now it seems like it's kind of hit a dead end.

 

So people of YCM! Attachments! Should they be removed? Should they stay? Should only images be removed from attachments while anything else be allowed? (Pro-tip: doc files, pdfs, and a lot of other things are acceptable.)

 

Reminder: A lot of "new" people only use attachments to upload their cards.

 

So like... yeah. Discuss.

Yeah i'd say disable. There isn't really a need for them if they're basically illegal on the site. But then again there would be hundreds of topics with noobs asking the same question, "How do I upload the cards I make." I think they still do that but I also think more would just pile onto that bunch.

It often results in people's cards being shunned and ignored because of them.

 

The removal of attachment would probably create a large amount of threads is Questions and Help asking how to post their cards since attachments don't work.

 

I'm iffy on it.

I don't normally comment on stuff like this but my first weeks of YCM used nothing but attachments. It's a starting step for people that gets rid of the whole, save as -> photo site -> , people eventually learn. However for new members this makes it easy for them to start, get used to the forum, and find someone who can show them how it's done. Keep it, if only for new members to start and learn how so maybe they'll stick around instead of jumping into the more difficult route.

The thing with attachments before was that it was really small and you had to click it to make it bigger, and then it was all just a big hassle.

 

Since now you cant really tell the difference between an attatched image and a posted image unless you're actively looking for attatched images, I say keep em. Doesnt really make a difference IMO.

The attachments can also carry viruses last I checked. Then you have someone without an anti-virus fuming because his/her computer got butthurt.

Only if you do something to the actual attatchment I think. Now that attachments arent annoying little thumbnails, theres no need to do anything with the actual attatchment.

The only reason I could see keeping it is because if you try to upload a card directly via the Card Maker, it doesn't work. Now hear me out; I understand that it's easy to save it to the Desktop and upload via PhotoBucket or .imgur, or do what I do and use YugiCo and just copy the code, but newer members might not understand how to do this and that might turn them away. Aren't we going for increased activity here?

I agree with Spike. There's nothing wrong with them now. I think we should keep them.

Attachments will not be disabled, I've never discouraged their use.
