This s*** gotta stop. I remember back in the day when I was beaten up, ostracized, and all kinds of s*** because I acted nerdy. For bringing my friend's copy of D&D to school and being picked on because I spent time alone reading. Or reading up books about racism, namely how Asian Americans, African Americans, and etc. had to fight so hard to gain rights in this country and then get bullied just because I educated myself.

 

Now I see the same type of people spouting Star Trek quotes that everyone knows and claiming themselves to be nerds. Not to mention TBS apparently thinking Nerds are pop culture whores who no longer need to be smart but just knowledgeable about casual games and pop culture.

 

But no. TBS decided to do this and now I had to see their little nerd quiz which was filled with stereotypical questions. Apparently I'm not a nerd because I don't do cliche nerd things like end every command with make it so number two or memorizing my IP address.

 

I'm honestly gonna go berserk once this show comes out and I'm confronted by idiots claiming their so nerdy for watching.

Read this. No need to care about it. Nerd culture is not something to protect because it's essentially the passionate pursuit of knowledge in your expertise. If someone was bullied because of that, where's the right to bully others because of what think is fashionable?

 

Frankly, all nerds are basically hipsters anyway. They all show the telltale signs of not wanting to consign to the mainstream, and become very exclusive in their group. When nerd culture is attacked by 'the mainstream', you have natural tension. Whether nerds would like to confess to this being the reason or not, I'd say it's the closest comparison.

 

The other reason unfortunately is that as a side effect of loving knowledge, nerds tend to judge those who don't have the same knowledge. i.e. nerds are bullies.

 

I say this myself, by being a self-confessed gamer freak, and having enough absorption of nerd culture. Also, it brings me to indie gaming. Indie gaming is essentially what 'fake nerd culture' is all about. I'm pretty sure that many nerds confess to playing Minecraft, Fez, Super Meat Boy or other random unsigned games from Steam, for example. They are all celebrations of hipster culture frankly.

 

Also, note that fake nerd culture is not them making fun of real nerds. It's a harmless attempt to try to get on what's fashionable. Of all things, shouldn't 'nerds' be happy about this new wellspring of nerd popularity. If one thing that nerds hated is a social stigma, when it's gone, we suddenly start complaining about it?

In all fairness, though I agree that one should not attack others for attempting to accommodate themselves into specific "cultures" and failing at it, such as this scenario with Hipsters trying to be Nerds, it is damn right annoying. Same with the fact that people are now putting on glasses, calling themselves Hipsters and claiming they are smart, without regarding that they put a "LOL" or "YOLO" at the end of the sentence. So, no, even I wouldn't like to attack others in these aspects, but you yourselves can tell me, as people who seem educated, smart, and reasonable, if (or more appropriate would be when) you see some douche you know at school, and you can beyond doubt recognize him as an uneducated dumba**, post a picture of himself on Facebook with 2$ glasses, holding a book in one hand and an iPhone in the other, looking that the only thing he has in the description are things such as "LOL I'm Smart" only in some unrecognizable gibberish language, can you frankly tell me that you don't feel a tad p***ed off? If so, then you must be the most tolerable person to exist.

 

Now, do not think, or fall into the social standards, that Gamers are the uneducated people I'm talking about. In no hell could I say so because at least half (if not many more) of the people on this site are Gamers, including myself for that matter, and I can clearly say that the people on this site read and are educated a lot more than most people I know in real life. This is particular to say because we learn something from games, in the same manner that a person can learn from a book or a novel or a poem. No, as I stated previously, if you want to see an uneducated person, just turn on your Facebook account and look for a picture with the qualities I mentioned, you'll probably find at least a dozen.

 

So, to conclude this small essay of mine, don't critique people like us because one felt the need to post about how angered he/she is. I find it understandable, and if you just looked at a Hipster you'd understand as well. I know people just have to deal with it, but I see this website as a community, and in a community, one should have the right to rant as long as it's a valid reason.

In any case, back to topic, I believe that if a topic deserves to be p***ed off about, then it should be ranted on. I don't really know or care much about reputation as I care about the question (and answer) at hand. And since I think this topic deserves to be ranted on, even though this is the internet, I not only wish to justify the rant, but rather even encourage it.

 

So in other words, if most of the topics that you rant on deserve to be ranted on, then I can't say much except to rant on as you apparently have so far.
