Superman Sucks

ITT: Smallville destroys these arguments.

Superman was created during a time when people were looking for an ideal hero. Superman was the first well-known superhero, before Batman and Spiderman. It's only in more recent years that people have wanted to see more human superhumans. So, if you want to see a more human Superman, watch Smallville (which chronicles Clark Kent as he develops his powers as a teen and young adult) and watch the new Superman movie coming out, which will probably serve to add new depths to the character.

As for Lois Lane...yeah, she's a walking cliche who also needs more depth.

Superman's involved in two of the greatest fights in the history of animation.

So what if he's overpowered? That's the charm of Superman. He does awesome things to solve problems, like that scene in the first movie where he spun the Earth in reverse by flying really fast, turning back time to undo Lois' death.

Also, the dashing Dean Cain.

I don't like Superman anymore because he is too righteous. It's a similar arguement to me with Batman and killing people (which is how I think the series should end before having Batman be a League member full time and to train the young). The videos shown were him doing a crazy amount of character change and if he goes to the Dark Side there's no telling what he could do. However he doesn't. He never really caves to the Dark and apparently has more variations of him that are even more broken. Like SUPERMAN PRIME. TF IS HE ON. As another point If he is a Kryptonian and thrives off solar energy, I have a giant issue with his entire planet being blown up and there only being a few survivors. It's like his creators are saying even among his people, Kent is exceptional. I want Superman to get exposed to a Darkness and never come back from it. Like finding out Superboy Prime was created from his sperm and a mind controlled clone of SuperGirl, effectively making him his son. Then I want him to learn this after he kills him and discovering that only another Kryptonian can kill one. A Darkness that will never heal. Like the Death and Revival of Robin in Batman or finding out Ra's Al Ghul is now your daddy. Or making your best friends father into a cold psychopath or having one of the 2 most important women in your life killed before your eyes like in Spiderman.

It is his purity that I don't like. If he is going to be that pure give him some character and personality flaws other than a complete mistrust of Lex Luthor.

As far as Smallville goes, it is beautiful because it helps create a new dynamic in Superman other than , "I am pure just because." At least we see that he earned it there.

The only reason why Superman has my approval is BECAUSE aside from Vegeta he is the only person that can fairly throw hands with Goku. Because Lelouch and Itachi would win.

Go read Sam's Story.

I f***ing dare you not to f***ing cry along with Superman in that story.

Anyhow, Superman was a hero we needed from another time. That's why he doesn't fit right in. He's a relic, a relic to keep for the memory of the people from another time.

I'm neutral about Superman surprisingly. Though I f***ing hate Superboy Prime.

When you go and watch the new Superman movie come back and tell me he sucks. When you manage to create the world's most popular Superhero come back and tell me he sucks.

It really depends as well. Smallville dispels a lot of the points you just attempted to raise. I admit, in our day and age he is somewhat flawed as he only has one weakness. But, like I said, people make adaptations such as Smallville.

I made one point. That he has no flaws.

The only mediums that portray him with any are Smallville (Where he just turns into the Sueperman we currently have) and the Justice League cartoon, where he actually seems like he's on the verge of saying "f*** you I'm superman".

Also, since when does popularity mean something isn't bad? Bleach is f***ing awful, Naruto is mediocre at best, and Final Fantady VII has good gameplay but a s*** story, all of which are popular and overhyped.

Being popular does not exempt somethig from being a badly written thing. If you want more examples, there's Twilight and that Twilight fanfic turned novel about a woman's fantasies.

Superman is too super. He has like every freaking super power known to man(yes I know that, that statement isn't true but it was just used to prove a point). And yet he his allergic to a rock...

Another problem I have with him, why is he so powerful yet Batman and other various heroes can take down villains that challenge him with a lot less effort. Does that contradict my earlier statement? Oh well.

But yeah, Superman is too super and no one likes him.

I will have to vouche for Smallville though. I love that show and it does give Superman more depth...still don't like him as a hero though...

I've always thought Superman was meant to be a stereotypical superhero, and I think it sort of gives him his charm. He was one of the first superheroes too, something that counts for coolness in my book.

Regardless, I think it's impossible NOT to be the slightest bit enthused about this.

You thought wrong then.

This movie will be a hit. A box-office smash, the critics will love it, yada yada yada, same old same old. However, Superman will still be Superman. Kryptonite will still be the only thing that can slow him down. And so Superman will still be the cookie cutter mould, and will win against Goku in the Death Battle, bla dee bla. But will he gain fans? He shouldn't but will. The only reason he will is Christopher Nolan. And that's it.

A rule of the Internet we can derive from this inhumanly intelligent thread:
Shitting on famous anime/manga/movies/comics/literature makes you look smart, no questions asked.

First off, the topic itself is a parody, and the discussion is supposed to be, mostly, about opinions. People just got their jimmies rustled and didn't read the actual topic.

Secondly, I wont hate on Batman, KHR, One Piece, and a plethora of other famous things. And I'm not gonna say the badly written things aren't likable, considering the majority of people don't think in terms of good and bad writing. I mean, hell, I still like Naruto and follow Bleach, even if it is just to see it through to the end, but I'm not gonna deny that they're mediocre and s***, respectively. Mostly nostalgia factor, but I do still follow them.

Someone has to fit that cookie-cutter mold, and I think Superman does a great job. He's regarded as the original guy, and I can respect that, even if he is unoriginal and "broken".

Oh God, not another Superman rant topic.

I love Superman and will still love him. You want to know why?

Simple, Superman is the "It" of superheroes. He defines the idea of Superhero. Sure he has no flaws so what? Not every freaking thing has to have a flaw.

This is why I don't like discussing literature with some people. Critics can be horribly cynical about what they read and how they read it and it honestly pisses me off. Not everything has to be wrong with a guy to be a good character. I am sick of this "Too Good To Be True" concept that everybody has to have in every damn book. Superman keeps to a time that I admire. A time when the superhero had a good concept of whats good and never questioned it and was always there to help.

You people say that Superman is cookie cutter. Well I think your criticism of him is extremely cookie cutter. I honestly like the fact he has no REAL flaws. That is why I like Goku. I will admit having too many of them can be annoying but these two keep it together for me. He is great because he maintains an atmosphere around him that says "Trust me I know what I am doing".

He makes you feel like it will always turn out good in the end. It is that assurance that keeps the story interesting in my opinion. Plus, give me any superhero that can legitimately bring the 10-15 demographic to comics. I DARE YOU!

Kids look up to Superman more than any other. Why? Mostly because he has no flaws.

I mean seriously if Superman is flawed because he has no flaws, I can yell about how I think Code Geass is the stupidest pile of sh*t too ever insult anime because of it's annoying political message that looks like a giant billboard of "HERE ARE MY OPINIONS NOW WATCH ME!" I don't go around saying that because I know deep down that that is a horrible opinion to have on it. The same goes for Superman.

Lighten up people. You might not appreciate what Superman gives to comics and kids, but I am glad I do.

Pssst. This is a parody of the Spiderman thread, and the real topic is discuss opinions in general, not Superman.

You have no idea how much I am laughing right now. I am so sorry, I completely missed the mark there.

However my post also discusses opinions on Literature in general so I guess it is still relevant.

Again my apologies. This moment is going in my "Derp Moments" archive forever.
