I was thinking of picking up an instrument and these were ones I were interested in. I can't decide and decided YCM could help me make up my mind.

only because i myself play the trumpet, i say go for it. And as for cost, it kinda depends on the quality of the instrument.
Its fairly easy to learn, although that last poll question is kinda tough, cause you cant exactly play emotional music other than happy or angry with a trumpet, but then again that depends on the instrumentalist.

Honestly speaking. You should learn the Bass. I mean how many great bass players can you name? The answer is none.

Paul Gray, John Paul Jones, John 'The Ox' Entwistle, Michael 'Flea' Balzary, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, ecetera ecetera

While Bassists are underappreciated, there are those that are famous and impressive.

I meant an actual bass.

Oh.....>.> I feel stupid now.

But to be fair. You dont hear about many famous anything classicals much. 'Cept piano.

I didn't put my input did I? XD I'd pick Lute I think, mainly because I already play a tonnes of different Guitar types, so it wouldn't be too difficult for me.
[s]But I think a Trumpet would be easier to get a hold of, even if not necessarily cheaper.[/s] Screw that, you can buy them both off of eBay; and the Trumpet is a LOT cheaper; half the price at least.

What instruments do you already play?

I'd say Saxophone would be a better choice. It plays a much larger variety of genres, it's much more popular, it's a great instrument, easily recognisable, can buy them from around £185 ($230 or so I'd think), and it's a fun instrument to play/learn, at least that's what my Music teacher said. It's also one of the ones where the skills are transferrable, if you ever think of learning some other instruments, I think.

If you were thinking of learning a lute, you'd be best off learning Guitar or Ukelele first and transferring the skills over, because I'm pretty guitar or Ukelele would be easier to pick up, and have many more tutorials and such for them.
With Trumpet, you'd probably want to start of with a Saxophone anyway, for the same reasons as guitar.

Sounds more like Trombone to me, but I'm not an expert on brass. I go towards a string section more.

But if you're looking for Cheapness and ease of learning, out of those two, Trumpet is your safer bet. As I said, you can get Trumpets on Ebay for about half the prices of the Lutes. I dont know about quality.
And Trumpet is more popular than lute, so there's probably going to be more books and stuff on it.
