Shradow
"Sweet JP" - rightfully named for his personality, retro style, and refusal to mount weapons on his racecar - nearly wins the "Yellowline" race against a host of semi-pro alien drivers, most of whom use oversized vehicles with jet engines mounted with guns and missiles, but just before the finish line JP's car is sabotaged by an explosive device placed by his friend and mechanic; Frisbee. In the past, Frisbee and JP were sent to prison for fixing races for the mafia, and are doing so again so they can keep racing. While recuperating in the hospital and reminiscing over his loss, JP finds out that he was selected for the "Redline," despite not qualifying in the last race, due to popular demand and because 2 racers withdrew. The Redline race takes place on Roboworld, a militarized planet ruled by cyborgs. The Roboworld government is violently opposed to the race being held on their planet as they have several ongoing secret projects. JP and the other racers are transported to a backwater moon near Roboworld to prepare. There he meets Sonoshee the winner of the Yellowline, who he met before either of them started racing professionally. After meeting several oddball racers, he has to repair and refit his car damaged from the Yellowline. With Frisbee acting as the designer and a friend of theirs, a 4 armed old man procuring parts, they aim to make a high powered racecar that will hold up against the other racers. It's like F-Zero on drugs and it's a freaking awesome movie. ?someone?
I've never seen it. From your description, I have no idea why.
Shradow
Well, probably because it only showed in Japan, and I'm not sure how well known it is that you would know to buy the DVD.
WTFauKorean
great movie, surprisingly exaggerated art style from the same guy who made digimon. f***ing weird right? the exaggerations create an understanding of how fast these races are and how extremely influential it is to their world
Steel Crimson
I'm pretty sure that this film was made into a live action film too, they made it bad. I wouldn't suggest watching it if you liked this.
Dr. Cakey
That description doesn't mention the most important thing: this movie is 100% hand-drawn. No CG at all. The thing took seven years to make. Anyway, it's pretty badass. I just watched it a couple days ago. I ordered it from Right Stuf, and it's only $15 (BR) / $12 (DVD). And the dub is excellent. I didn't really take notice to that till now but yeah that's true, I mean the movie isn't even that old I think it came out like 2 years ago, but if it took 7 years that's what 2003 they started? So damn they didn't really have that much CG resources to begin with. I really think deciding to keep its style and not transition into CG as the years went by really payed off. It was meant from the beginning to be CG-free, and it's actually even more significant than it seems. Although CG wasn't actually visibly included in anime until <insert correct date here>, it has been used for a much longer time as a sort of first pass to construct the scene, with the final product being line art of the CG. This isn't a bad thing at all. As far as I can tell, it's only a good thing - it makes the animation look better and it's cheaper. Redline returns to hand-drawn only, with (according to the creators) 100,000 hand-drawn images, which (according to my rough math and zero knowledge of animation) does indeed correspond with how many frames-per-second I'd expect in a 102 minute animated movie.
