Darth Revan of the Sith
In the late Medieval times, a movement began in the populace of Europe between 1300 and 1500. The movement was a concept on the universality of death and had become popular as the Dance of Death. The Dance of Death was a pretty simple concept of death. It stated that no matter what you do or how you are, the dance of death will unite all. It was made to remind people of the time how fragile their lives were and of the pointlessness of the glories of earthly life. That no matter what you do, you will be a corpse sooner or later.
Danse Macabre (French) Danza de la Muerte (Spanish) Danza Macabra (Italian) Danca de Morte (Portuguese) Totentanz (German) Dodendans (Dutch) Surmatants (Estonian) Dansa de la Mort (Catalan)
Why is history repeating itself you ask? Simple. The YOLO campaign. This campaign reminds people that they only have one life but in a more positive note than before. It has become a positive hybrid encouraging people to live their lives to the fullest rather than waste the time they have. Discuss...
.Rai
This was kinda a common thing in Roman times too. Mosaics of skeletons were placed in dining rooms to remind the rich that everyone is ultimately subject to death. YOLO is awful because no-one who's self-respecting actually would associate themselves with a phrase that's basically to do with silliness. Obviously, living life to the fullest is a great achievement.
ListenToLife
Danse Macabre is an awesome book by Stephen King. But, to be honest, I dislike the #Yolo thing, because it's pointless. No-one's actually doing anything. It's just people doing stupid things and saying 'Yolo' as an excuse. And sometimes it's just plain dull, like people going 'I bought Pepsi rather than Coke today...#Yolo'. Just boring as hell. Plus it's immensely annoying, and must be rather irritating to those who believe in Reincarnation, like Buddhists or Hindus.
Tentacruel
YOLO is an excuse to make even worse use of your life, so it's a failed attempt.
bury the year
YOLO is Carpe Diem for simpletons. There's probably a way to fit in La Danse Macabre into that analogy, but I can't be assed.
Mors Secundis
You're saying YOLO is like Dance Of Death, except back then they didn't have enough freedom to be stupid. these days you've got Swag-f**s and Whores, Hookers and f*****s all trying to 'live life to the fullest'. Living life to its fullest doesn't mean catching every STD Like pokemon, it also doesn't mean getting so drunk you get alcohol poisoning and die. YOLO Is another way of say Carpe Diem Like Rinne said. I'm pretty sure the philosophy behind Carpe Diem is to be SAFE as you live life to the max, I think I'm living Like to The max and I Play Yugioh, Magic the gathering and pokemon in my spare time along with programming a Minecraft Mod...I'm not going to try my luck with the next car that drives down my street at 50 Mile Per Hour Screaming 'YOLO' as I do it. Humanity is stupid, and YOLO is even more so, I'm glad YOLO was bought to light because now more stupid people die and we have the smart ones who didn't take YOLO as a challenge left.
You don't understand YOLO and neither do the 90% of people following it. People were even more stupid back then than now. Here is what people believed back in those days... Disabled people are brought from the devil. Sea Monsters were legit hazards. Spitting on a wound cured it. The Pope could heal the sick by touching them with his staff. A woman was never meant to get a job let alone think of the concept of getting a job. Get the picture? People back then were just as stupid or even more stupid than us. And so what if they decide to get more STD's? The original goal of YOLO is Carpe Diem related but the people who follow it seem more familiar with the Dance of Death than YOLO really. Getting STD's? Who gives a crap? That is what the Dance of Death is concerned about. "It doesn't matter what you do, you're worthless. Get over it, you're going to die. No matter what you do or how famous you are you are going to die anyways." It basically gives the idea that it doesn't matter when or how you die or what you did before you died. You are still dead. Let them get STD's and die. According to the original belief, they might as well do it anyways. The Dance of Death pretty much says you're worthless. However YOLO is meant to bring a more positive view on Carpe Diem, however the people seem to relate more to the Danse Macabre then YOLO anyways. Translation- You're all f*cking worthless. Get it now?
.Rai
Obviously, YOLO was just heavily misused as a whole. YOLO and carpe diem (or 'seize the day') are practically the same thing. It's just nicer to say carpe diem because it makes you sound posh. It's nice to know we've moved in a more positive direction since La Danse Macabre. CinnamonStar
I thought yolo/swag/thug life were some of those Internet expressions that pop up sometimes and make people brag about things they either won't do in real life or that are bad ideas anyway. The Danse Macabre had an aesthetical fascination with death, something the YOLO movement doesn't seem to be concerned with at all. But yeah, if you look at it from that end and go after what we hear, it sounds more like a modern-day hipster version of Carpe Diem that turns out looking more like a Danse Macabre concept. thug life bra
Womi
In German it's Totentanz, not Tortentanz. Tortentanz would be "cake dance". Yeah.
