Why Are Horror Movies Terrible Now?

Exactly what it says in the tile. It seems to me as if horror movies are trying too hard now. I can see the shock factor in pretty much every movie, but they fail to build suspense until the climax happens, and by then it's too late for the movie to be redeemed. Since pretty much every horror movie that's come out in the last few years is like that, I will not use examples.

I'm pretty sure every slasher flick since Halloween has had a couple having sex in it. After you've seen the teen couple get killed while in the act the first thousand times, it tends to get stale.

The same goes with every other cliche horror story plot known to man. That is really the big problem: Little to no creativity.

I watched House at the End of the Street yesterday. The plot was unique and it had some serious potential to be a good if not great movie, but they focused too much on the special effects to get some jumps out of you. It could have gone more in depth on the psychological aspect of the plot, but it didn't. That's what stopped it from being good.
It didn't explain how the guy went psycho and started kidnapping girls to replace his little sister. After her death when she was a little girl, the seemingly crackhead mother forced him to take her place as her daughter while the dad just sat back and gave about as many s**** as a honey badger. That explains why he killed them, but the fact that he started to kidnap girls is never explained at all. He said he needs her, but the movie never explains why he started doing that in the first place or how many people he's used to replace her. If they had covered that, then the movie would have been a lot better. There are more things they could have expanded on, but the reason behind the kidnappings was given zero attention, leaving a gaping hole in the plot so big I can't come up with a metaphor for it.
Hollywood just found out that horror movies are an easy way to earn money. They're cheap to make and the income's almost always double the production value, thus writer/director/actors needed aren't that big of an issue for a quick buck for studios. Good example of this is House at the End of the Street. It was canned for either 1 or 2 years but was finally release due to Jennifer Lawrence's recent Hunger Games fame.

Overall 2012 is really not a good year for horror movie. A chunk of them are from mainstream directors/studios exec i.e Paranormal Activity 4, Underworld 4, Resident Evil 5, The Devil Inside. While some of the good ones were indie film distribute by small studios like Lionsgate i.e Cabin In The Wood which was filmed a long time ago and before Chris Hemswort was cast as Thor, The In Keeper, Sinister and Antiviral.

Even the SAW franchise started as an indie film distribute by small studio- Lionsgate.

Also...FTW...is that you?

Don't lose hope in the horror filming genre. There is still hope in the ARG fields! Slendy Vlogs are a common practice nowadays and a lot of them are well made for Horror series.

I suggest giving the Slendy Vlog genre a look!
Some of them include...
MarbleHornets
TribeTwelve
EverymanHYBRID
DarkHarvest00
MLAndersen0
CaughtNotSleeping
OneHundredYardStare
OsirisChronicles
All of them can be found on youtube!
Give them a try! They are Horror genre'd Youtube series and there are a lot of them out there too!
