STVB
ive been wondering this for awhile now, you know how cards say "Once per turn", self tribute cards like exiled force or cards that add and remove counters? i know the once per turn thing is clarified now for either only your turn only or either yours or your opponents turn, but i mean like any time at all during any phase, even the damage step, i know i may sound dumb and im pretty sure this cant be done, but theres no rule/ruling ive found that says i cant, (its prolly an unwritten rule that everyone just knows, either that or you can use these these effects any time at all like quick play spell cards and trap cards and im one of the very few who didnt know this) in MTG, theres self tribute cards that my well experienced friend says you can tribute during the end phase and when its used to block but also tributed and blocked at the same time, killing 2 birds with one stone. so unless he and i werent playing it right, could we do the same in yugioh? sorry if i made you all face palm just now, i just want some clarification on this, i thought this while making a "fun" deck. if im right, i may have just opened up a bunch of new doors to the game, if im wrong, i just made myself look really dumb. inb4noobandmebeingdumbrelatedcomments
Just Crouton
"Once per turn" always means your turn only unless it's followed up with something like "during either player's turn." Otherwise, Doom Lord would be the king of trolling. Other than that, assume effects like Breaker's, Exiled Force, etc can only be used on your turn. Sleepy
It's understandable to get confused about that when new to the game and stuff. That is something decided by the type of effect it is. There are Ignition, Trigger, Quick, Continuous. -Continuous are easy to spot. They never "activate", and are present on the field as long as the monster emanating that effect is face-up. Example: Jinzo. -Ignition effects only activate during your turn, and are Speed 1. You recognize these by things like: "Once per turn", "During each of your Standby Phases", and that sort of lyrics. -Trigger effects. There require you to do something to happen. Monarchs need you to Tribute Summon them, Dark Magician of Chaos needs to destroy a monster to banish it, Judgment Dragon needs to have you pay 1000 Life, Exilied Force needs to be Tributed. Cost or Condition needs to meet for them to happen. They are still slow speed 1 effects, just like Ignition effects. -Quick effects. Speed 2 effects that can be used during either player's turn. Usually chainable like Zero Gardna, usually meant to respond to something like "Herald of Orange Light". It either says it activates in response to another card, or just says "during either player's turn". ^those are the basic ones. For a better explanation, I guess wikia will do: http://yugioh.wikia..../Effect_Monster
STVB
ok thanks guys, makes sense, but it doesnt exactly answer my question. basically what im asking is, could i tribute exiled force for its effect during my standby or end phase? or only main phase 1 and 2? -Griffin
-Ignition effects only activate during your turn, and are Speed 1. You recognize these by things like: "Once per turn", "During each of your Standby Phases", and that sort of lyrics.
From the wiki: "Ignition Monster Effects are Spell Speed 1 effects that require a manual activation by the card's controller during their own Main Phase 1 or 2 (except "Red-Eyes Wyvern", "Daigusto Eguls", "Alchemic Magician", "Speed Warrior", "Splendid Rose" and "General Gantala of the Ice Barrier")." These are the effects STVB is asking about. As the wording says, they can typically only be used in the 1st or 2nd Main Phase, and only at the same time you'd be able to (for example) enter the Battle Phase. Konami explains it in more detail here: http://www.yugioh-card.com/uk/gameplay/rulings/FastEffectTiming_for_webpage.pdf Scroll down to the last page. They can be used during time "A" of the Main Phase.
ok thanks guys, makes sense, but it doesnt exactly answer my question. basically what im asking is, could i tribute exiled force for its effect during my standby or end phase? or only main phase 1 and 2?
So the answer for that, would be MP1/2.
Expelsword
Almost all once per turn effects are MP unless they specify.

Miror B
"Once per turn" always means your turn only unless it's followed up with something like "during either player's turn." Otherwise, Doom Lord would be the king of trolling.
Shooting Quasar Dragon.Generally it's better to think of effects as Spell Speed 1 unless you can find a logical reason for otherwise. "During either players turn" or "During your opponent's turn" is one since you can't use an ignition effect on your opponent's turn. Quasar is another because in order to negate a spell with an activating effect, you need to chain to it, and the only time SS1 effects can chain is by SEGOC. Otherwise you can just ask. darkwolf777
Time for my answer: "Once per turn" only means "Once per turn". A turn consists of all the steps from a player's Draw Phase to that player's End Phase. "Once per turn" does NOT imply whose turn you can use it on. Do not assume this when a card states "Once per turn". Only the effect types will determine that. Ignition Effects are Spell Speed 1. They can only be used during your own turn, during your Main Phases. You cannot chain these to other cards. Trigger Effects are Spell Speed 1. The are used when their conditions are Trigger. The player's turn does not matter (unless the card states otherwise). You cannot chain these to other cards, except to other Trigger Effects that are triggered at the same time. Quick Effects are Spell Speed 2. They can be used during either player's turn. They can chain to other Spell Speed 1 or 2 effects. Continuous Spell Card effects are Spell Speed 1. Continuous Trap Card effects are Spell Speed 2. Now that we have "Once per turn" and basic "Spell Speed" information down, the rest shouldn't be too much of an issue. "Snipe Hunter" is an effect that can only be used Once per turn. The card text does not imply it can be used during either player's turn. The card effect does not require to chain to another card in order to use its effect. It can be assumed that it can only be used during your own turn, and is therefore an Ignition Effect. "Blue Dragon Ninja" is an effect that can only be used Once per turn. The card states it can be used during either player's turn. Therefore, it is Spell Speed 2, making it a Quick Effect. "Legendary Six Samurai Shi En" is an effect that can only be used Once per turn. The card does not state if it can be used during either player's turn. The nature of the effect is that it must chain to the effect that it wants to negate. Therefore, its a Quick Effect and is Spell Speed 2. It can be used during either player's turn. "Wind-Up Factory's" effect states "Once per turn". This card does not state it can be used during either player's turn. The effect activates in response to an event that happens. This makes it a Trigger Effect. If triggered during your own turn, you can activate it once. If triggered during your opponent's turn, you can activate it once. I hope this helps answer any issues.
