Expelsword
Every decade has their super popular music that causes parents to go "Oh, this song was huge when I was your age", and is essentially timeless. The 70s had Dancing Queen The 80s had Thriller The 90s had Ice Ice Baby (Well, ok maybe not) etc. Anyway, I''m curious, what do you guys think the timeless songs of the 2000s are? 2000-2010, that is. Agro
Suggestions: Beautiful Day by U2 Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day Soak Up the Sun by Cheryl Crow How to Save a Life by The Fray Move Along by The All-American Rejects Here It Goes Again by OK Go Clocks, Speed of Sound, or Viva la Vida by Coldplay Hey Ya! by OutKast Crazy by Gnarls Barkley Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne Oh... and based off Billboard records: We Belong Together by Mariah Carey I Gotta Feeling, Boom Boom Pow by The Black-Eyed Peas Lose Yourself by Eminem Yeah! by Usher Smooth by Santana (1999) Apologize by Timbaland feat. One Republic I'm Yours by Jason Mraz Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood You and Me by Lifehouse Higher by Creed The Way You Love Me by Faith Hill Drops of Jupiter by Train Amazed by Lonestar Just based off how the decade went and comparing to the genres that you say were for the last decades, my guess is that the correct choice should come out of the R&B genre. Based on choices for dances... "Yeah!" by Usher is probably the most played.
Expelsword
I mean, there's more than 1, I just named whatever came to my head as examples.
CinnamonStar
Not sure about timeless. But songs that I think made an impact and haven't been mentioned yet: The White Stripes: Seven Nation Army Gorillaz: Clint Eastwood Evanescence: Bring Me to Life Avril Lavigne: Complicated Shakira: Whenever, Wherever / Waka Waka Beyoncé: Crazy in Love Rihanna: Umbrella Maroon 5: This Love Daft Punk: One More Time The Black Eyed Peas: Where is the Love? Pussycat Dolls: Don't Cha Kelly Clarkson: Since You've Been Gone Ne-Yo: So Sick O-Zone: Dragostea Din Tei Panic at the Disco: I Write Sins, not Tragedies Taio Cruz: Dynamite David Guetta: Love is Gone, When Love Takes Over t.A.T.u: All the Things She Said I agree with Beautiful Day Boulevard of Broken Dreams Soak Up the Sun Viva la Vida Hey Ya! Crazy Lose Yourself Yeah! Apologize I'm Yours Drops of Jupiter =o
Bahamut - Envoy of the End
Looks at the two lists. Well I think we can establish something here: What a s*** decade for music.
CinnamonStar
Dunno, people will often brag about things after some time has passed.=o It's the nostalgia feel. I see people getting off to cheesy girlband/boyband songs at 90's parties - the same people who were complaining about said groups and how music is going downhill years ago.=o But I sort of agree about the "quality" if you look at the most popular songs. My personal favourites are probably Apologize, Viva la Vida and Hey Ya!. Those songs are freaking legit. It...does seem like the main genres of the decade were R'n'B, Hiphop, some Rock and female solo singers. I can see Yeah! and Hey ya! coming out on top (and look the @ similar titles). Agro
Looks at the two lists. Well I think we can establish something here: What a s*** decade for music.
No, it was just a decade where the most popular music was not in a genre you like. :\ There were people in the 70's and 80's who complained about the most popular songs being s*** then too.
Gorillaz: Clint Eastwood
I disagree. "Feel Good Inc." is a better choice.
Lord English
Other than drug and sex music, I can think of one: Hey Ya! - OutKast That song was brilliant.
CinnamonStar
Feel Good Inc. is probably the best thing they've done, but I feel like Clint Eastwood was more well-known. Don't have the selling data by hand though. But they can both go there, since they're like, the only really popular songs of the band.=S 3 more I thought of: Duffy: Mercy Red Hot Chili Peppers: By the Way Amy Winehouse: Rehab or Valerie But probably Mercy out of those.=o
Tentacruel
I hate to post this, but I'd say Through the Fire and the Flames was pretty noteworthy.

Expelsword
Just yesterday I heard Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down, apparently released Jan. 17, 2000. I think that one can qualify.
Agro
Maybe, but let's face it, it wasn't HUGE like some other songs. there's apparently a few other songs by Eminem that I'm forgetting.

Cute Rotten Yoshika
im honestly surprised no one mentioned Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. that was pretty big for awhile. not so much in the US but the US is just one area of many and it was huge in Britain. other than that i do agree that Hey Ya! is probably one of the best examples. it very much feels like a song of the time, if that makes sense. I dunno about including Weird Al. But that's just me. The rest are alright. Daft Punk - One More Time, Technologic, Harder Better Faster Stronger, and Robot Rock Deadmau5 - Ghosts 'n' Stuff (feat. Rob Swire), I Remember, and Move for Me Skrillex - Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc, Stylo, Clint Eastwood Dragonforce - Through The Fire And Flames M83 - Midnight City MGMT - Kids, Electric Feel, and Time To Pretend Slipknot - Psychosocial That's all that I can name off at the moment The thing is, for a lot of those songs, they weren't as popular as a lot of the ones we've already mentioned. They were good, yes, but I wouldn't say they exploded besides Feel Good Inc and Through The Fire and Flames. Though for the second, I must admit I had never heard of it until mentioned in this thread. im honestly surprised no one mentioned Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. that was pretty big for awhile. not so much in the US but the US is just one area of many and it was huge in Britain. other than that i do agree that Hey Ya! is probably one of the best examples. it very much feels like a song of the time, if that makes sense. That's a good point, and I guess I haven't taken that into account that much. There's probably a whole different list depending on the country you're in. I'd say if we want a quintessential list, we'd have to look at what songs were big EVERYWHERE.
Cute Rotten Yoshika
while on one hand i agree with that statement, on another i feel that just chart position isnt enough. for example, Take Me Out didnt ever hit number 1 but for several years it was THE song to play in a commercial if you wanted it to be fun or lighthearted. theres a lot of different ways a song can be considered successful or ubiquitous. this feels like its getting harder and harder with every post someone makes ahahaha.
