Nicο
Even though there was no reason, I decided to wait until I finished all the anime I was currently watching (that ended) when the spring season ended to post my thoughts. So I'm definitely gonna be spoilering to save space.
Some of the very few anime that I was really not fond of in recent memory has been this "Demon Lord and Hero" business that's been going around. Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero and Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. So as you would think. I was very hesitant about trying this, but I figured a more comedic take couldn't hurt. I do not regret it. At all. Stayed hilarious throughout, especially episode 8 I find, and that epic second to last episode... man, most of the time not even the battles are that serious. This is one of those anime that I just can't help but think did a great job by making a more subdued last episode. The best part is, it seems to be selling very well anime was quite the pleasant surprise to a lot of people, combined with the very nice way of leaving it all open ended, giving a high chance for a second season. Hoping for the confirmation though, as that always helps. And hey, I'm not expecting much, but this gives me some hope for that other, similar sounding anime adaption that shouldn't take much longer coming.

Well, first and foremost, nothing but your average harem. The comedy factor should be the most important considering the action wasn't all that during the finale, but I feel it wasn't so great compared to quite a few others, and well, even the manga. Shame that got cancelled, still hope the artist is okay. The anime did kind of make Tohka more likable though, imo. The only thing I can really say I didn't like one bit was Kurumi. I don't know if she truly fits the definition of Yandere, but those traits are just downright revolting. Only thing holding me back from feeling the announcement of a second season was good news, since I know they'll have to get around to dealing with her after not concluding her like the rest.

Who would have though that the objectively worst adaption (not sure about worst anime, but I can't be far off the mark with this being the worst adaption) this season would actually have a fairly enjoyable, anime original finale? That's just me, really, and honestly, I can't actually see most experienced people enjoying this. I don't care about he mixing of arcs, but I feel like if they get far enough, the characters they cut will end up being a bit too important to have lost, and it's just not detailed enough itself. That's why I say if anyone ever wants to give this a go, I'd say stick with the manga, that way you'll actually know if you'll enjoy it or not. If you try the anime, chances are you won't. Just be wary if you're not into fan service, the manga has it going a lot, I'd say, while the anime actually has none. Unless you're into guys. That's not even mentioning how they've barely even gotten to any of the good stuff. Pretty much downgraded from the average shouned the manga is, into a very mediocre one. It is shounen. If you're wondering why there are that many bishounen, well, it's probably the author's doing. There usually are an over abundance of males in anything remotely action shounen anyway. I've also heard that whether you like the manga or not, her big animated adaption was pretty cruddy too so, there is that. At least I was able to see how Orochi's extensions worked, manga isn't always good for that sort of thing. The green flames are pretty to see animated, but that's about it.

Gurren Lagann, Code Geass... I've seen quite a few mecha anime that I can't say doesn't outdo this one in terms of excessive fan service. Wasn't bothered enough to care about that. The only thing this anime really gave me were the two most enjoyable breather episodes, fitting as they are to the main theme of the show, in a while. Besides, that, I hoped it would still be fairly different than the average mecha, but imo it failed to do that much, and the last episode ended up being the least enjoyable.

If an anime studio that isn't Manglobe (or I guess, from the looks of it, DEEN) decides to pick up the most popular and plot oriented arcs from Hayate, it'll probably be one of the bigger anime that particular season. Now me, on the other hand, I prefer Hayate when it isn't so focused on that kind of plot. Just becasue the chapters that were adapted for Cuties were mostly filler-ish, doesn't automatically make things bad. On the contrary, that is more or less what Hayate has always been about in the first place. When it adapts, it adapts well, when it doesn't adapt, frankly, I'm just glad it doesn't adapt. That was my main issue with Can't Take My Eyes Off You. You just don't mix in your original story and mess around with the actual adaption (unless your name is Kyo Ani). Manglobe improved big time over the course of the movie, CTMEOY, and this. It was all adaptions until the last 2 episodes, in which I am glad that there was actually no material being adapted, considering it went back to that black camellia thing. My biggest issue with Cuties, then, is probably that it continued straight from where CTMEOY ended. So the adaptions were either placed at the wrong point in time, or just plain flashbacks. And Gilbert appeared more often than he deserved. Easily one of the more memorable parodies out there, at least in terms of characters, anyway. Kayura JUST made me interested in another anime.
Fusion X. Denver
Elfen Lied This is pretty much the first in-depth review I've written, so this was fun typing up.
watching this was an experience. If I could give it an alternate title, it'd be "Explicit Discomfort: The Anime". There were a lot of moments that were difficult to watch and scenes that had me cringing or left me disgusted. And while everything I've just said may have had a negative connotation to it, I must say that it was overall one of the most memorable and intriguing watches in my time with anime. Story Nothing too complicated and pretty easy to follow, the story of Elfen Lied tackles themes of racism, loneliness, jealousy, love (or moreso the lack of), and wrings all of its characters through utter despair. I don't want to say Elfen Lied was devoid of predictability, but for the most part, I couldn't tell what direction the story would head in next and I can definitely say I was on the edge of my seat for most of the time. It's a shame the ending was left a bit too open-ended, but I heard this ended before the manga did, so I guess I'll go read it later for some closure. Overall, the plot doesn't have that many layers to warrant it being deep, but it's also enough material to keep the viewer engrossed enough where they avoid falling into the pit-trap of just going along with the ride and ignoring the minor details. Dialogue was all over the place for me. Sometimes it was brilliant and captivating, mainly when you could feel the raunch emotions behind the words spoken. But then it had its downsides, mainly when any evil people spoke. Those kids that bullied Lucy and freaking Bando were so unrealistic and mean-spirited that they were almost laughable considering no one would talk like that nowadays unless they were genuinely screwed up. 7/10 Animation First thing I noticed was the nicely drawn backgrounds.Well, actually the first thing I noticed was the detached arm with still-twitching fingers in a pool of blood along with almost ten minutes of footage of Lucy massacring a bunch of guards. But then we had nice backgrounds. Anyways, I actually thought they did a splendid job with the attention to detail during the gorey parts. We saw heads twisted off like a corkscrew, people split in half with their bones and innards visible, eyes gouged out, and other pretty messed up scenes that had careful treatment during the development process. The action involved with these scenes was pretty basic however, mostly amounting to people jumping and either shooting in front of them or using their Vectors to do the work for them. The character design was a bit of a turn-off for me. The eyes were too big for my liking (even by anime standards) and a lot of the faces look really similar. If you took two characters and stripped them of all their features, I'm not sure they'd be easy to tell apart. 7/10 Sound The soundtrack was brilliant. Lillium speaks volumes in its somber tones and it serves as a worthy symbol of the Elfen Lied story. The sound director also knew when to accentuate moments in the story with the right soundtrack that would enhance the scene at hand. The serene and somber notes fit this show perfectly, though only Lillium is particularly memorable.I watched the dub for this show and voice-work was pretty decent overall. However, Mayu and Nana sounded too similar and the female voices didn't do much to distinguish between them. Though this was done a few years ago, so I chalk it up to age. Regardless, voices could have stood out more. 9/10 Characters(minor spoilers in this section) This cast of characters is both very layered and complex while also vapidly simple.Any character that received some sort of backstory was well-done in my opinion, or at the very least good enough. Lucy and Kurama had the most intriguing exploration in my opinion, with Kouta and Mayu also benefiting with added layers to their characters, though their present-day incarnations don't impress as much. Kouta came off as a little plain to me up until we learned his deal and while I can definitely empathize with him, I feel the staff could have executed events better to flesh him out a little more and make him stand out rather than having him act subdued and unmemorable. Yuka was pretty annoying. She was absurdly jealous (when did Kouta ever give off romantic signals towards Nyuu/Lucy, seriously), a little too overly emotional (I think she was a bit too upset about Kouta forgetting his promise as a kid) and I could've sworn I heard her say "you jerk" to Kouta like 10 times. And then Bando's plainly unbelievable. What kind of security force would employ a wild card like that? Especially one that would point a gun in his comrade's face? The way he acted and the things he said were things a brutish thug would say and not someone that should be working for government.Slight aside, why in the hell would his partner Sato act like nothing happened after Bando clocked him in the head with his gun? 7.5/10 Overall If you aren't squeamish and want an explicit, mature story that has a bit of action, melodrama, and themes prevailing in despair and racism, look no further than Elfen Lied. I can see why it's been watched by so many people; it has unconventional execution and directly deals with and exploits subject matter most other animes would dance around, censor, or just completely avoid in general. And it has lots of mindfuckery, I know people enjoy it to the extent that it's become a bit of a sub-genre nowadays. No worries, this anime has it by the buttload.
7.5/
Nicο
The Unlimited - Hyoubu Kyousuke This is what Kayura got me into after watching Cuties. This, however, unlike Ronin Warriors, I have to say was enjoyable for me. Standing on it's own pretty well, since well, I have yet to even watch/read Zettai Karen Children. While there may be a reason this is so under the radar, it doesn't seem like too many people would find it all that memorable, I find myself enjoying it a lot more than other anime of it's kind lately. Andy's esper power became almost annoyingly similar to Touma from A Certain Magical Index, and unfortunately, that happens to be one of the reasons I enjoyed this so much. Let's see how long the chain of anime making me interested in another can last for... Hayate - The Unlimited - Zettai Karen Children - ??? There isn't much I can say but it just seems to have that cool factor in all the right places. And maybe, just maybe, they should have at least not overused the lolicon joke. I also really like how they didn't have an English version of the opening just to have it, it seems to symbolize the importance of the US/Japanese military during that particular episode. Hope that isn't much of a spoiler, cause I don't really feel it'd be enough to hid.
Aix
Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan I may tear up on occasion, but before reading this manga, tears have never actually fallen from my eyes when watching or reading something before reading this manga. It's very short, only one volume, and I read the entire thing in one go. It's completely different from what I usually read, so I can't say much about the story, but it flows perfectly. The art style is very clean and is well-suited for the manga. The characters are very detailed and incredibly human and they managed to put amazing character development in this very short manga and show how both their character and outlooks on life change. At any rate, definitely a 5/5.
King of Games
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 The blu-ray was on sale, so I bought it, going in blind. Well, the Opening is stuck in my head now. Strong first ep, the follow up was good too. Enjoyed other main character being introduced. Starting using more as background noise after that, tuned back in when Kuwabara was being cool. Not bad, not bad at all.
Nicο
Ah, dead thread, but very fitting for what I just finished. Shinigami no Ballad Even counting the fact that episodic things are not always regarded all too well (though the recent Avengers stuff comes to mind when it comes to some things actually being better off episodic), this is the kind of episodic series I can't say I can even bring myself to enjoy. Most every character changes episode to episode, and I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to count Momo as a character. The only other character to appear in every single episode, her cat, I have to say has plenty more character than her, imo. It was interesting to see how this sort of thing would develop, but at the same time, it wasn't very interesting itself, really. On to the audio. I watched the dub, and for the most part, my biggest concern is that sometimes people really needed to sound more enthusiastic/emotional, especially Kouta's voice provider. I couldn't help but tear up during the last episode despite there being all the same problems. For the kind of thing that this is, though, it's episode length in 6 is about as right as it can get. Not really something I think I can handle much more of, that's for sure.
Aix
Katanagatari Here is a less-known anime with an interesting art style, perhaps not a very creative overall plot, but had good character development and it leaves you with quite a satisfying ending. Although it had a big focus on action, a very big majority of the content was, in fact, dialogue. It was episodic and followed pretty much a set structure for each of the episodes except the last, yet it still managed to differ enough each episode to be quite interesting and amusing. This definitely deserves a watch. Note that each episode is 50 minutes long.
Johan Liebert
Mirai Nikki/Future Diary- Before I begin my review, I have to say this anime far exceeded my expectations. Also, by a long shot, my two favorite characters are Ninth and Akise. They were very well developed and fun to watch. Anyway, Future Diary really got me hooked after the first ten episodes. Also, Future Diary is the perfect thriller-anime. But, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone that can't stand a "creep stalker bitch" (Quote from Future Diary), implied (for the most part) rape, and bloody violence. Honestly, I really urged myself to watch this, it was hard sometimes, but I don't regret it, even now. There are a lot of things to love about Future Diary, and I'd give it a 9.3/10. It really earned the number four spot on my favorite anime list.

Thar
School Days - Seems like a perfect anime to review after Mirai Nikki. Mirai Nikki was spectacular, and Gasai Yuno is #1 on my favorite female protagonists. Now as for School Days, I'm gonna try and hold back my explosion of feelings because at first I thought I was watching just another drama set in a school setting. For the most part, that's all it really was, just an awkward guy that had a crush on a girl, was caught by another girl who tried to help him out, he managed to get together with said girl, but as he and the helping girl got closer, so did their hearts. He falls in love with the other girl, and then that's when shit hits the fan. Before I know it, he's sleeping with every girl in the school, and drama builds to the point of no return. But then those last few episodes... f*cking... dfsahfdsa... (this is not me being totally mind-fucked and disturbed, but rather overemotional and hyperventilated about the ending. That ending... good lord...) fdbshafkjhdsfkjadsfadsfadsasfs... Mirai Nikki was actually an exciting and giddy watch for me. School Days, however, was just plain brutal. I'm not talking about blood and death, here. That stuff doesn't bother me. It's the flaming suspense throughout that made it feel like flying through a thunderstorm on a magic carpet, and at the end, the carpet burned away after being struck by lightning and I ended up falling. The recovery of this ending for me will depend on where I land when I reach ground level. God, I'm just depressed and satisfied at the same time. I've never been this emotionally conflicted over a show before. This is awesome.
Fusion X. Nicο
Battle Spirits: Sword Eyes I dunno how this compares to any previous Battle Spirits, since I haven't seen any and don't plan on it, but this did get me interested and I plan on following the next one. Saving the world with card games never got so generic. Regardless, I did like the charaters but would have liked more time to develop the whole lot of them, and the game itself was pretty interesting for a first time viewer, I find. What my biggest problem with this would be is that besides the last one, every single battle was a one-parter, and then it took three episodes for the last one. Really throws off the pacing, and at least Yu-Gi-Oh! has more variation in that aspect. It just felt a lot more repititive than it could have been, because trust me, I'm sure the game has enough of a variety itself. Also, Hagakure best ninja. Fusion X. Denver
I knew that the hype would end up rising my expectations too high, so I tried dampening them a bit, and I'm glad I did.BUT, I did enjoy the movie. Like Kaiji mentioned a page ago, it's fun seeing the characters again and it's a decent quick watch that'll take you back to the olden days. And I was surprised that it managed to make me and my friends laugh a few times. Seeing Piccolo do karaoke, Gohan wearing Saiyaman under his clothes, and Bingo Vegeta will forever remain one of my most favorite memories in all of Dragon Ball. I mean that. Also, Bills was a very interesting antagonist, at least to me. Sure, he's pretty simple and doesn't hold that much depth, but he does feel like a perfect fit amongst the rest of the cast and I liked his interactions with Goku and the rest. The way Goku became Super Saiyan God was fucking stupid though, I'm sorry. It was just too corny/cheesy for me, even when I wasn't taking anything seriously. I would've almost preferred Goku asking Shenron to become SSGod.The fight itself was pretty alright. It's interesting to see a DBZ fight with modern technology. CGI was spotty at times, but overall I enjoyed it, though it was a bit anticlimactic. That ending dialogue made me feel excited. I would not mind Toei making a sequel series about the different universes at all so long as Toriyama helps out.
This probably deserves a 3.5/5 for what it is, but I'm giving it 4/5 because at the end of the day, I loved seeing everybody again and it was fun to watch. Me and my friend were going to have a movie night and watch it together :/ It is definitely not bad and I enjoyed myself quite a bit watching it. But I feel like people have been putting it on this really high pedestal because it's the first new big thing DBZ's had in years when they should just go in there with no expectations and take it at face value. Once you don't have that disappointment from the unreasonably high expectations, you'll have yourself a good movie. And at the end of the day, if you're a fan of DBZ, that's all you really need to enjoy yourself.
Nicο
Teekyuu 2 It feels like they could have slowed this down, and it would actually sound right. Like, they recorded the whole thing at a reasonable pace, got high, and decided to have the show be high as well. A couple extra minutes isn't gonna hurt anybody when the show is only a couple minutes in the first place. Probably would have liked it as much as most other shorts had it been like that, but the downright drunken speed of it all is just not for me, I thought it was horrible. Only watched it to see if it would get somewhat better like season 1, barely cracked a smile, and did not laugh at all. Really bad for something like this. Will not be watching season 3. The World God Only Knows III The only real problem I may have with this is they never actually took the time to adapt the rest of what came before it, for me this was just about on par with season 2, which I thought was a lot better than season 1. Regardless of the reason, I personally would have liked the anime as a whole a lot more had they not skipped so much. I don't really believe the brief recap at the beginning of episode 1 cut it. Sure, Tsukiyo and Yui were pretty easy to warm up to, bit I think it would have been nice to see them for the first time as Keima did, instead of him saying stuff happened, especially for Yui. Well, I will be reading the manga, but from what I've seen, it does look like I prefer the anime art, so there is that. WataMote As the only thing I watched that wasn't a sequel the season, I can't say I was displeased, but overall, most of the sequels were much better, which I suppose does make some sense, if I liked them to begin with. Tomoko is a thing. Really she is. She is able to relate to a lot of people, for various reasons, and as such, you are not going to help but cringe at a lot of the things that happen in this anime. At some point early on I realized this would just be entertaining enough, but it was never able to provide me with the enjoyment I was hoping for, considering what I've heard about it. Or the manga at least, but from what I hear this is just as good, possibly better due to it being very well animated and some other things and agreements I can make with that. But well, summer is summer, fall is best.
mitchermitcher
Stella Kotouka Jogakuin C3-Bu This show's been wild, very. At first glance it seems like something rather typical, but on finishing it, it was a truly Gainax experience. Not a fully Gainax experience, but the core remains. Do not let the set-up fool you. Yes, the first half is more or less very chill and just like most other animes(Not bad by itself), but the second half will be what stood out the most for most people. It's darker, maybe even edgier. Plot twists will come, people will sit on trains, we will be reminded of Evangelion. Either way, in the end, as a work of Gainax, I'm satisfied, very. In my opinion it may not be my personal favorite of Summer 2013, but it was one of the most enjoyable shows of the season. Then again, this season's been a goldmine, so it's understandable. The character development in this show is fantastic, for the main character Yura Yamato, who grows, and changes very rapidly as the show goes on. Of course this leaves some of the team members not as developed, but they serve their character archetypes, to bring out Yura's change more, and I don't believe that's a bad thing. The show doesn't try to make the other team members more developed than they're meant to be, which is good. There are some...questionable parts of the show that does not really fit in, and really kind of relies you to just go with it though. You'll see what I mean when you see it. To summarize, this show is rather like Upotte + K-On + Evangelion, with some gigalomaniacs from Chaos;Head or Haruhi Suzumiya thrown into the mix. To say nothing else, this show delivers. Nicο
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days The Kingdom Hearts manga have never been action manga, and this is no different. In manga adaptions of video games they quite often seem to make the battles feel much shorter than they really should be. That said, this one still seemed to be a decent job at adapting the game's plot, and for that it deserves applause. Wish that more of the Disney worlds would appear in these manga, though. 3.5/5 (I still seem to rate things on my own list, but from now on, if I'm doing this, since I'm not a reviewer, I'm just gonna rate things based on have much I enjoyed them) Rozen Maiden (2013) The choices you are able to make brings with them many different worlds. Or at least, that was the term used here. I guess this is what made this more interested than the earlier stuff, but ultimately fell short of satisfying. I actually liked the last episode, and pretty much every episode, instead of forcing myself to watch it, like I found the majority of the older stuff very uninteresting, but the ending is still garbage unless they follow up with something near as good as this. One thing I liked that may just be me, was that I really felt the fighting to be less forced than it felt to me before. Seeing how small the dolls were when they felt at least slightly bigger in the original stuff was weird, though. It's probably because collage Jun. Some of what went on due to seeing how small they really are made it slightly funnier than the earlier anime, but Deen cold have probably done better with something else, and this probably would have done better from another studio. 3/5 because if nothing else, this was definitely better than the first season of the original for me, and I had to give it a 2.5 due to it being just barely watchable. Aikatsu! (first season) At first, I was a little skeptic when I found out this was going to be 50 episodes, but as long as I liked it, that wouldn't be a problem, since I started it as it started itself. Then I remembered reading how when this first started, it took Zexal's timeslot. That, combined with the fact that it is a kids anime, made it very unsurprising it actually did have 50 episodes. Only now that it is going to have another 50, I am overloaded with joy. Compared to the other 2 idol anime I have witnessed thus far, there is no doubt in my mind that this is my favorite, and it actually making it into my all time favorites list doesn't hurt, either. I found the very gradual pacing and atmosphere to be much more fitting than AKB0048 and Love Live, when I normally like seasons split apart first (I do tend to like things around 50 or so episodes the most, though). Not that I didn't enjoy them either. Seems that this has got that same sort of periphery demographic that Precure has, older male, me, who I am, when it is clearly aimed at girls, just a lot more under the radar than that. Incredible cast of lovable characters, and very freely for very kiddy reasons. I'm ashamed of myself. Not really. Parting ways with your best friends to go to the other side of the world is pretty heart wrenching. Also, during the hot springs episode, they never ended up reaching the hot springs, and just went back to the academy. That's a good thing. I am surprised after all the time it gave us to bond with Ichigo, and I did so very easily, it looks as if she is not going to be the protagonist of season 2. 5/5 bringing out the inner child of mine, when I remember watching such things as Mew Mew Power, Pretty Cure, and a very small amount of Sailor Moon. Wait this isn't a magical girl show. Also, I'm sold on The World God Only Knows's one shot. Not like I wasn't already due to the anime, though. Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice To me, this seemed like it emphasized the need for battle more than anything else, at the cost of almost everything else. Not my favorite Pokemon movie by far, but enjoyable nonetheless. 3/
Fusion X. Denver
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012) JoJo’s just a fun watch. It certainly lives up to its name through the bizarre escapades and the nonsensical behaviors and poses of its cast, but I love it. It’s ridiculously shonen and it overuses the clichés that come with the genre, but the thing is, the show knows that. It’s one thing where a show rolls along relying on standardized crutches, but JoJo manages to take those outdated/eye-roll worthy moments and make them entertaining to watch regardless. I’m not entirely sure that made sense and that might have just been my interpretation, but the point is JoJo makes what should be generic and cliché into something like a pseudo-parody that’s just fun to watch. At the end of the day, it entertains with zany characters and situations. Also, those openings are the most rewatchable openings I’ve come across since Attack on Titan. 8.5/

Thing is, JoJo has been around since 1987, and must have for the must part just ran on the clichés to keep it going, but the anime really knows it and makes it work, like you said. What an unlikable villain though, spring is gonna be just grand.
Fusion X. Denver
I've never seen the Part 3 OVAs, but I'm psyched for the new season. Especially since it's supposedly one of the most popular parts of JoJo over in Japan.
