Better articles than the one you provided. :/

Anyways, we can't really judge the police for opening fire on the protesters, as the protesters had weapons on them (machetes, clubs, other weapons). What would you do if there was a group of people rushing near or at you while carrying cold weapons?

A COWARD DIES A THOUSAND DEATHS. Don't they have tazers and whatnot anyway?

Apparently, rubber bullets are banned there, but I can't speak about tasers as I don't know what the equipment for the police there is.

There are other methods to disperse crowds without shooting them, but we don't know precisely what the police had on them at the time and whether they were properly trained for these types of situations. While it is cruel that people have died, police usually will shoot an offender (or rioter, protester etc) if they feel they cannot get them to calmly drop a weapon or feel threatened if they don't have any other methods on hand.
