Make your cards, post them, look at advice (cool cards 10/10 is a crappy comment for people to leave btw) and learn from it.

Not only that, research the yugioh meta. Last thing you want to do is make a cool and original card that breaks a current meta deck.

Well its just about picking something that interest you. For instance I love tea and coffee so i was going to make a tea deck based on the drinks and different stuff you can be served with them. To make them real and not broken is the next step first think of the effect then try to narrow it down as much as you can without losing the idea that you began with. You want a give one take some effect usually which means there should be a cost of some kind. The final step is that effects can be used in different ways than the norm. You don't have to confide within that Boundary but remember to don't leave the realm all together. Also some good advice would try not to go with a strong card but weak cards that create a setup for a big card also Dragons and Warriors have all been done but if you keep the effect original it will get notice.

Well that's all the advice I have so i would like to offer you the chance to work on my "Tea" Deck with me if you like for some practice.

Making Original cards is basically thinking out of the box. Either make something that's never been made before or try to come up with something fresh and new, such as my Magician's Advent set which feature Fusion Monsters which are Fusion Summoned using a Monster and a Spell by banishing them from the Graveyard. As for whether the card is Broken or not, just pick an effect, give a cost and voila. But don't go too much on the cost because that could make them UP'd. Feel free to ignore or accept my comment since I'm practically crap when it comes to balancing.

Generally, I make cards that are a bit OP at first, so a rule of thumb I use is that if I think my card is pretty balanced, I would tack on a drawback. You also have to consider how well the card could be used or abused in a certain deck or in combination with other cards. But really the best way to improve your cards is by collecting feedback from your other cards and using the best advice. In terms of originality, I would choose the image of the card first and then name it and give it its effect based on what it looks like it could do.
