Mario and Sonic crossover games future?

With the advent of the Wii U and the London Olympics underway, what I have on my mind is the crossover of two different universes. Since the idea was conceived, the gaming public has had high expectations of a truly border-shattering game that would incorporate the lovable charm of the Mario universe and the quick speed of the Sonic universe. All that was given, however, were games based off of international sporting events. I understand that it is next to impossible to make a full-fledged platformer combining both platforming engines, but I don't think that their fans would want 3 games in a row based off of sporting events (they did it possibly because it is easy to intergrate the controls of sporting events onto the Wiimote). However, with the Wii U's arrival, will Nintendo and Sega do something different, maybe? I'm honestly hoping for an RPG, since it is easy to combine the two universes in that fashion and still get a new experience. In addition, Sonic could be wanting another RPG after the Dark Brotherhood. Discuss. It would honestly be disappointing and a waste of potential if they keep the Mario and Sonic games running across the bland concept of international sporting events.

If they do go with an RPG, I could see some of the classes:

Mario and Luigi could be hammerers
Peach could be the White Mage
Yoshi could be the Archer
Sonic could be the rouge
Tails could be the Black Mage
Knuckles could be the Fighter
.......
Profit?

Putting in mind,
For about 20 years now Sonic has out out numerous games and my parents were playing Mario games when they were my age so the smash-up maybe profitable, but it would have to have a small bit of violence and then a great story plot. If its a horrible game design, then no ones going to bother buying the game, and theyre gonna go 'oh look another smash-up thats great' and pass it up in Wal-Mart. So it'd have to be pretty darn good to be bought around the world.
