[Finished]Dark Paladin's Bane Card Contest [Complete/Please Lock]

Xi-3

Recommended Posts

Look at him, all smug and secure -- but he's also got the power to back his claim up. Yes, I'm talking about Dark Paladin, and to a lesser extent Buster Blader: a card designed specifically to counter another monster archetype. Because of Dark Paladin, the Ultimate Magical Swordsman I have always hesitated to use a Dragon Deck. Now it's time for the Dragon-types and other often-targeted card types to strike back -- it's time to be Avengers.

Since my previous contests were overly complicated, this one is going to be simple. I'll lay it out step-by-step. Those who are up to the challenge, come at it however you like so long as you follow the rules. Here it comes:

The Assignment
1. Choose an official TCG card, preferably one that is Level-8 or higher. It can be any monster type, including Fusion/Synchro, Ritual, and Xyz.
2A. Create a Monster Card that specifically targets and counters the above targeted card. You can use 1 of:
a. its Attribute;
b. its Archetype or a Subtype;
c. its Effect/s;
d. its Name;
e. anything else you can think of with which to target a card.
2B. Alternative to creating an original/custom Monster Card you can create a Spell or Trap card that will allow an official TCG card to take the targeted card.
3. Have fun with it.

Rules & Evaluations
To enter, please send 25 points to me. I will take 5 points as an administrative fee, and the rest will go into the pot to be divided by the Winners as usual. Please, when you submit your card, include the Lore below the card as well. If there are any differences between the Lore on the card and the Lore below, I will take the Lore as it is below the card, so please be careful of spelling and grammar issues.

If you have any questions or doubts about your card so you can make it a better contender, ask. You can change your card right up until the final deadline.

As usual I will be giving each card a score out of 100, divided evenly between the categories of:
1. Name & Picture Choice: Are they interesting, and do they fit the card?
2. Balance: Balanced or over/underpowered?
3. Cogency: Does it make sense? OCG (or Xi CG) not required.
4. Vengeance Factor: How well it counters the targeted TCG card.

I will be accepting entries until July 9 at 12:00 EST, or whatever time is closest to when I get to my computer. The extra time is because I expect to be elsewhere on the 8th. The submission period is from July 9 - 15 at 12:00 EST. I am also inviting up to 2 posters to act as Guest Evaluators and help me out. I would like to get between 6 and 10 Contestants, and know realistically that we might end up with 3, and I'm fine with running the contest with just 3 if I have to. I think it would be more enjoyable, though, if we can get a roster that's a bit more full, so we'll aim as high as we can.

Any questions? If you're up to the challenge send me your 25 points and I'll reserve your spot. Let the games begin.

I found a card which to me seemed a bit overpowered and I just felt like knocking it down a peg or two, hope you like it. :)

Entry fee received, newhat. You have your spot. This contest is much simpler: just one card, although still with my patented Xi twist, I like to think.

Submitted your card already, KuraiOokami? We don't even have all the entries yet... or is this a sample?
Wow, is that for real? Blanket negation (including the controller's) to face-up cards, and it targets your Xyz monsters. Maybe it's a good thing I don't know how to use Xyz monsters: this card is going to end up all-but useless against me, not that I'd let my opponent summon something that took 3 Level-8 monsters to do. And to top it off, on top of the effect it's just as powerful as "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon." I kind of get that: you could use "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" as one of its materials. It looks like it would be really hard to summon. Maybe that's why it's so powerful.

So I think it's really funny that the card you made is weaker, stat-wise, yet it carries a huge punch if your opponent activates "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's" effect. And what a messed-up name that is. I was laughing, really. It's actually a good example, because if it works it will really sting your opponent's Life Points. On the other hand, the timing has to be perfect, or the card will destroy "Rift Maker" by attacking it. The question is whether or not you can negate its effect negation. Good thing chains are resolved in reverse, huh?
EDIT: KuraiOokami, you may want to make one slight edit to your card so it can actually counter "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon."

It is ridiculous: what would someone even look like if they had a galaxy in their eyes? And isn't a photon a type of charged particle (and a type of torpedo in Star Trek), but still? I'm sure there are some other confusing names, but this one has got to be pretty high up there. I imagine someone going:
"I summon my "Neo Galaxy--""
"Yeah, my dragon's blue. She shoots ice and freezes stuff. Bye."

Just the points that go into the pot. I don't really take this site's rep system seriously, but if you want Rep if you win, I can give you my maximum daily allowable, or something like that. Seem okay?

I will be going up against Judgement Dragon. It's time for Judgement Dragon to be judged.

Lore: 2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn, when a card effect that destroys 1 or more cards is activated: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; the effect will only target your opponent’s cards. If you activated this effect: Any damage to your opponent’s Life Points is halved until the End Phase. If this card has no Xyz Materials: Its ATK and DEF becomes zero.

This card can not be chosen as a target as long as there is another monster on your side of the field. As long as this card remains face up on the field the effect damage of your opponent's Archfiend monster cards that is done to his/her life points is doubled.

Hope you like it.
Sincerely,

Unfortunately, r34p3r, you have missed the Entry Period this time around. Good luck next time.

KuraiOokami, you don't have to go to an entirely different idea. Just revise the card or the card you're countering so it's clear how you're achieving the objective for this contest. In this case, you could fulfil most it that simply by getting rid of all but one of your Archfield cards. Also, 'twice?' I thought the first one was a sample since you submitted it before the Entry Period ended. Learn something new every day, right?

I am accepting any changes/revisions to submitted cards until the morning of July 18th. Good luck.

Okay, lets try this once more with just an alteration to "Rift Maker"

If your opponent Xyz summons "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" you can summon this card directly from your hand and immediately activate its effect. You can select and activate 1 of the following effects:
-Pay 1000 life points to negate "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's" effect and inflict damage to your opponent equal to its current ATK.
-Pay 1000 life points to negate "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's" effect and inflict damage to your opponent equal to its current DEF.
I tried my best to do what you said and I gotta say, that's the longest effect I have ever made.

It's fair: everyone knows the rules and the other competitors could claim I've been favouring you with advice, but not them. My main concern has been doing whatever it takes to ensure those who participate can fulfil the contest's requirements, because they have been misunderstood in the past. In either case, this part is now done. The Submission Period is over, and now it's time for the Evaluation.
1. Name & Picture: The name remind me of a 'Buddha,' and then again so does the picture. You have me wondering if this is a real term, or whether you've made it up. Either way, it's original and simple to say. The picture does not really give a sense of what the monster can do, but that is part of the mystique of some cards [25/25].
2. Balance: Its stats are reverse that of a "Blue Eyes White Dragon," so it's not the most powerful of Level-8 monsters. At the same time, it can precisely counter "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon" in its Special Summon -- or, really, any Special Summon with a LIGHT or DARK monster that has more ATK than Budai's 2500. In exchange, "Budai" gets summoned to the opponent's Field instead of your own, and this has me worried because apart from not having any other effect it's a fairly strong monster. The Special Summon does require a certain amount of set-up, and you could have a more powerful monster standing by to destroy "Budai," or a spell or trap to retake it. It's clear that using "Budai" would take a fair amount of planning just to avoid getting hoisted on your own petard.The Special Summon for your opponent does make a certain amount of sense, since it was REDMD (or any other qualifying card, of which there are many) that got banished. That "Budai" becomes a beatsick after it is summoned is something of a concern for whoever controls it [20/25].
3. Cogency: The Lore makes perfect sense. I just wonder if "your opponent's field" should be "your opponent's side of the Field" or "your opponent's Field." Otherwise, I believe any player can use this card properly the first time he or she sees it [24/25].
4. Vengeance Factor: Not only does it take over the Special Summon from REDMD, but that of any other high-powered LIGHT or DARK monster as well. Anyone running such monsters, and relying on a Special Summon to get them onto the Field, would have to watch out for "Budai." The monster is effectively countered. The only concern I have is what happens afterward, and as I have indicated you can prepare for that -- and hopefully you would have already done so before using "Budai" to get rid of "Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon." This card deserves a high score because it can do the job without being too specific, making it more versatile than a one-card countering card [23/25].
Summary: A well-thought out card, although the summon for the opponent still concerns me. It is more versatile than it has to be, but then there's no way to guarantee your opponent will be packing REDMD, or just REDMD. That versatility helps get "Budai" onto the field. Overall Score: 92.

1. Name & Picture: Vengeance is indeed the name of the game, or at least it's one of the factors for evaluation. I take it the 'Judge' part is irony on your part, since this card's primary target is "Judgment Dragon." Also ironic as a judge is supposed to be impartial toward the defendant. The picture itself gives the impression of being a demonic ruler, rather than a fairy judge. This creature would certainly not have anything airy-fairy for its targets. Unfortunately I don't think the name and picture quite fit each other, so that little bit comes out of your score [21/25].
2. Balance: As I do not understand how Xyz monsters can have 2500 ATK and still be Level-4 monsters, I'm just going to ignore that half of the Balance equation, and focus on the effect. Your Balance score will therefore be taken out of 12.5 instead of 25 -- and that's my fault, not yours. Like newhat's card, yours relies on your opponent activating a monster's effect as a trigger. The cost you pay to activate The Vengeful Judge's effect is, I assume, standard for an Xyz monster (1 material). The fact "The Vengeful Judge" can only have 2 material at once limits the length of time this card can be useful for that effect -- not to mention the zeroing of its stats once it becomes empty. While "The Vengeful Judge" deflects the opponent's monster's effect so it only destroys the opponent's cards, you try to balance it out by halving the damage to the opponent's Life Points until the End Phase. Unfortunately I do not see this as being a very useful compromise for your opponent, whose Field you just cleared. While deflecting an effect from your side of the Field is more imaginative than merely negating the destruction of all the cards on the Field, you only compensate your opponent until the end of the turn. I would recommend either lengthening the LP damage reduction, perhaps to a few turns, or as long as "The Vengeful Judge" is on the Field -- or else extend your Judge's protection to all cards on the field and get rid of the LP damage reduction. If you think of another solution, please feel free to use it [9/12.5].
3. Cogency: It makes sense. The only grammatical mistake, and this is a general English mistake and not necessarily an OCG one (Konami makes plenty of their own mistakes), is that "If this card has no..." should be "If this card does not have any" or "If there are not any..." A minor fix, and probably not one that bugs the officials, as I said [23/25].
4. Vengeance Factor: With a vengeance on which you can bet, "The Vengeful Judge" not only protects your cards, but (as it currently stands) destroys your opponent's cards instead, and then offers witness protection for a very limited time -- actions not very worthy of a judge, in my opinion. But it does fulfil the main objectives [20/25].
Summary: I'm beginning to see a pattern in your thought processes: You want your card to be effective not only against the target card you posted, but others that fulfil the criteria as well. This is great, as it means your card is not a one-trick stud that gets put out to pasture as soon as you think its job is done. In your case, you suffered somewhat due to Balance, yet I do like the concept with which you went. Well done, and I look forward to more along these lines in the future. Overall Score: 82.

1. Name and Picture: This monsters certainly looks like it could open or 'make' a rift (which I understand to be a tear or portal, usually in space and/or time) and bring something helpful onto the Field. I do have a problem with the name being so generic. It could describe anything, and without the words "Rift Maker" I would not have any idea what the pictured creature is doing. She could be dancing, almost skating. I do not know. That is the problem inherent in any name that does not describe in more depth what or who this is [18/25].
2. Balance: I think you've made the balance tip more in your opponent's favour: looking at Rift Maker's stats alone, it could be a Level-5 monster with 2000 ATK and DEF. On top of that, you have to pay a full 1000 LPs to do something about the target's effect. On balance to the target's ATK, which will now damage its controller, that seems more reasonable, however this also has an inherent limit: you won't want to use it very often, even if your opponent does not attack "Rift Maker," wiping it off the Field -- because it's weak enough I can't see it staying on the Field for more than 2 turns. If you're lucky it won't have to, but one should never depend on luck alone in a duel [18/25].
3. Cogency: Here is the biggest problem, as I see it, and I tried to point it out to you before: your target is called "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's." To my knowledge, a card by that name does not exist. "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" does exist, and I know it is your true target -- yet if my understanding of the OCG is correct, "Rift Maker" will only target the monster with the name in the quotation marks. Which leaves you with a monster with 2000 ATK and DEF that you can Special Summon to your side of the Field, but you cannot completely use its effect. Of course, if I'm reading the OCG wrong then that's my mistake. If it is, I can give you full marks. If it's your mistake, I can only give you half marks. For now, I'm going to assume I have the correct reading [12.5/25].
4. Vengeance Factor: As above, according to my reading "Rift Maker" cannot use its full effect. To make matters worse, this monster's effect only works on "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" for the first part, and "Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's" for the second part -- which means it expressly relies on a monster that is extremely hard to summon, and then one that does not exist. If you took out the possessive on the second part this effect would work wonders, and have a huge kickback against your opponent. As it stands, it just gives your opponent another target to hit -- and not a particularly powerful one, at that [10/25].
Summary: Unlike newhat and .:Blue:. you chose to focus on one target by name, which means your tack was more original than theirs. Unfortunately it backfired, due to a simple grammatical error. Had you caught and fixed it, "Rift Maker" would have had full effectiveness. Overall Score: 58.5.
Conclusions: Everyone put forth a valiant effort. I find it fascinating that all your cards countered their targets on a reactionary basis, relying on your opponents to activate a certain effect, or bring out a certain monster. Since you all submitted your cards openly you could see how similar your cards were. Fortunately, I am not marking originality or creativity on their own, which balanced out the feeling that I was looking at much the same card. newhat's Special Summon to the opponent's Field is a unique effect, so far as I know -- especially since "Budai" is powerful and does not carry a harmful effect like "Lava Golem" does. I like the idea that a monster can be more versatile and not target just one monster, but if you know your opponent tends to carry a certain card? That's where something with the building blocks of "Rift Maker" can come in useful. I believe you all put forth a great and praisworthy effort, and I look forward to the next contest.
