Legend Zero
http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/31/google-applies-for-google-youtube-and-lol-top-level-domains/ http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hT5U_-goefmlUcd-vepXwH5GN9FA?docId=53817dab266e416fa1e0dc064ea890a3
If Google has its way, you won't need to type "Google.com" any more to do your searches. You can simply access the search engine at ".Google." Google's bid for ".Google" as an Internet suffix is among about 2,000 proposals submitted as part of the largest expansion of the Internet address system since its creation in the 1980s. Google Inc. also wants to add ".YouTube" and ".lol" — the digital shorthand for "laugh out loud." Others want approval for ".doctor," ''.music" and ".bank." If approved, the new suffixes would rival ".com" and about 300 others now in use. Companies would be able to create separate websites and separate addresses for each of their products and brands, for instance, even as they keep their existing ".com" name. One day, you might go to "comedy.YouTube" rather than "YouTube.com/comedy."
I find this to be pretty cool stuff. Though, I'll be so confused initially. =P
Tentacruel
I fail to see the point, unless the / character is evil or something.
ENMaker
Seems absolutely pointless. Why can't you just type in *gasp* Google, or YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, YCM, whatever into the f*cking search bar? It's a terrible idea that would only lead to confusion amongst the technologically impaired, and also among everyone used to using the internet the normal way. Cin
A bit pointless, there's not much point to it, but they can knock themselves up with silly things.
Raine
I WANT TO RENAME THE ALL THE STARS IN THE LOCAL CLUSTER! ...it won't do anything and just make people have to relearn what the sun's called... but I'm googl- I mean, Raine, we're so rich and popular we can do what we want. Same thing.
Poc
not as pointless as it seems, there is only so many names you can register under .com (although its a pretty damm big number) plus it breaks the .com monopoly.
Icy
not as pointless as it seems, there is only so many names you can register under .com (although its a pretty damm big number) plus it breaks the .com monopoly.
I sorta agree with this? Yes there is only so many names associated with a particular URL type that can go under any domain suffix, however therein lies a problem. Allowing an individual company to have their own like .youtube or .google would create it's own problems as well. Google, while the best (debatable if you get around) search engine and Youtube being the more socially known media upload sites are far from the only and will be far from the last. Granting them such a thing would just create a further monopoly over the whole scheme unless they do something to their company that would not warrant fear of massive overtaking. But adding a little more specific suffixes like .bank and .college/university would prove useful in at least cutting the clutter by a small percentage. But what possible feature could you gain from .lol ? Comedy websites? I'd reckon those could stay at .com/org and it wouldn't present any sort of problem... ever.
