Tattoos - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly?

Recommended Posts

As one of the elder members of this site who can actually get one of these and has wanted one for some time, thought I'd start a thread on tattoos and body art in general. I think tattoos are cool, as long as they mean somethings to the person. Some designs are bandied around too commonly by people who got them impulsively just because they 'looked cool in the shop', and having too many small random ones can look a mess at times. But generally I really like the concept and meaning behind them, and respect the endurance of people who have them.

Going to admit (not too bravely) that two years ago I wanted a large dragon and sword design that I had on a bandana put on my back, a really big piece of art for a first tattoo. After being sat in the parlour for over half an hour chatting to the guy and getting all ready, he had to ask me if I was okay. I felt fine until he asked me that, but when he did I realisied I couldn't move my arms or legs, and felt very ill. The guy was very kind and said the waiting while he was finishing his drawing and advised me to rebook. I couldn't face going back. The smell of the stuff they stick their tracing stuff on your back with, and the sound of the needle, they really put me off before he got anywhere near me. Yeah, yeah, I wussed out. Still ashamed two years later :)

I've wanted to try again since, but have lost the bandana with the design I had my heart set on :(

I also like sleeves, but don't have enough flesh on my arms to pull them off very well

So, who here has tattoo's / has a dream design / can retell their experiences / whatever.

If I ever had to get a tattoo, it'd probably be something lame like Mom in a heart or something on my tricep.

As it is though, I'd never do it. Heard the sh*t hurts getting it on and getting it off.

Plus it's gonna look terribad when you're old, though, no one including you is probably going to give a damn about your appearance when you're that old anyways.

I have no clue why people want flaming skulls and dragons and snakes and daggers and hearts and potatoes and whatever on their bodies for the rest of their life. That "I heart _____" tattoo might get a little awkward when you break up and then enter a different relationship...

I've never been a huge fan of sleeves and large tattoos in general. Yeah I know that some look cool but most of the ones I see are just pointless. There's a senior in my highschool that has two full sleeves already but they have no meaning(not to mention one of them looks terrible). I don't have any personal issue with tattoos I just wish people would stop getting them so frivolously.

I have a friend with a cute 'lil pokeball tattoo on his ankle. It's inconspicuous, yet a cool thing to show off.

Personally, I may think about one small tattoo on the ankle or something. I've always found personal sayings and sutras to be the best thing for tattoos for anyone who gets them. Anything else seems rather impersonal for permanent ink on your body.

Never been a fan of stylised, large tattoos, only because: 1. Usually, they don't have much personal meaning, 2. Will probably hurt like heeelllll and 3. Umm, it's big. Nah.

Nah, not for me.:D

I have really low pain tolerance and it wouldn't look good with the kind of stuff I'm usually wearing anyway.

If I ever think about getting one, it would probably be something small on the right lower part of the belly (also one of the places where it hurts the most x_x).

In Japan, if you have a tatoo, regardless of what tatoo it is, you automatically get seen as a member of the Yakuza (in short, Japanese gangsters). That's because it's popular belief from ancient times that our bodies are gifts from our parents, and so we should never damage them on purpose. Japan's got a lot of influence from Confucianism in the Edo Period, so if you make a tatoo, that means you're morally evil. Yakuzas do them on purpose to show that they don't need their family members to live, and that they will do anything.

So yeah, I don't want them. Ever.

My non-existant god, this. Finally someone said it. One of my friends is like that and he's putting a bit of pressure on me to get a tattoo.

See, people keep telling me 'oh get a small hidden one and see how you cope'. But... I don't want a small one. I want my big full back covering one for a design I bloody well lost!

Well, actually, there is a small collection I've thought about. Because I do Wing Chun (snake and crane style kung fu) I've thought about having a belt of the Chinese symbols for each style I study. Only if I did more martial arts of course, would look daft with just two. Also regarding sleeves, it is weird of me that I've imagined Dragunity sleeves would look epic in black and white? Just me?

My sister has three; matching swallows on each of her wrists and tiger print or something on her foot (haven't seen it yet). Usually I'm a very symmetircal kind of guy, but not on this occasion. And I don't really like tats on feet.

But yeah, she coped fine. I play rugby and do martial arts, I should be fine. But... that piercing noise of that needle, and the smell of that sticky stuff *shudders*

Oh reaaaalllllllly? And what would you usually be wearing might I ask?

*slapped*

And yes, my sister said that's a bad area for pain.

Did not know this.

Thank the heavens I didn't give any of the cast of YGO24 tattoos in my ignorance.

Thank you for enlightening me, I really had no idea.

There's a book about a man with a thousand tattoos and what not, and each one of them tells a different story. I forget what it's called, but I want something like that.

Not really, but something like Japanese writing because my family is into a lot of that stuff. I could tell you that my father has exactly four tattoos: His Marine Corp tattoo detailing his unit, a tiger, a moon on his shoulderblade, and my name across his left arm.

If someone does like a Chinese, Japanese or another apparently fashionable Eastern character as a tattoo, my god, please do it right.

You seriously don't wanna end up with 'I love eating buses' or something on your back. No.

Admittedly, Matt, the characters for Wing Chun basically mean 'forever spring' which is kinda artistic. Somehow. I like it.

I doubt I'd ever get a tattoo, but on the off chance I did I'd get this one because it's awesome.

Yeah I agree

and some badass warpaint

but that isn't exactly a tatoo

If I ever get a tattoo, I want an Eevee or Glaceon.

My mom has a Charizard and Scyther cause she let my brother pick her first two when he was like, four years old.

So I see no problem getting Eevee or Glaceon. :3

When I was a kid, I wanted to get a lot of tattoos. I wanted dragons and skulls and all that jazz. Now, I just don't see a reason for it.

I might get an outline of a star on my shoulder (like Black Star) along with some kanji and some other small ones.

Yeah, you have to be absolutely sure with foreign text. There are so many examples of people screwing it up.

Mind there are also so many examples of people getting tattoos spelt wrong in their own language!

I was thinking more the individuals symbols for snake and crane, then adding tiger, dragon, mantis, monkey, panther, bear, etc as and when I got the chance to do them in my life. (Just looked up crane, its three symbols long).
